Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 18 - 16: He Must Have His ReasonsChapter 18: Chapter 16: He Must Have His Reasons
"He actually agreed?" Huangfu Miaomiao was astonished.
Even if he didn’t know much about Cards, he should be able to tell from the name. The Jellyfish Card’s abilities were more suited for water, so it would be hard to use its full power in a tunnel.
"That was expected." Feng Ling smiled, setting down the tablet and getting up to dry her hair.
Huangfu Miaomiao picked up the tablet to look, then turned to Feng Ling. "Are you going?"
"I am," Feng Ling said, glancing at her with a smile. "And you’re coming with me."
"Me too?!" Huangfu Miaomiao grew frantic. "I haven’t slept all night, and I still haven’t eaten!"
"Just have a few packs of that Jelly stuff."
"Jelly?"
"That stuff you were having in the car," Feng Ling said.
Huangfu Miaomiao froze for a moment before it clicked. "That’s a Nutrient Supplement! You have to buy it with points! It costs 2 points for just one small pouch!"
"Two points?" Feng Ling felt a laugh coming on. She asked Huangfu Miaomiao, "How many points do you have left?"
Huangfu Miaomiao’s face fell. "Sixteen points," she answered.
This time, Feng Ling really couldn’t hold it in. Hairdryer still in hand, she burst out laughing.
’I always thought I was poor, but I never expected this little Alien Species to be even more broke than me. Sixteen points... it doesn’t get more ridiculous than that!’
"And you want to sign a contract with me with only sixteen points? While giving me 50ml of Recovery Agent for free every day?" Feng Ling scoffed. "You’d go bankrupt after just two days, wouldn’t you?"
Huangfu Miaomiao bit her lower lip, defiant. "If we signed a contract, I’d definitely do as many missions as I could to earn more points."
’She’s pretty motivated,’ Feng Ling thought.
"There are two packs of instant noodles in the kitchen. If you want to eat, cook them yourself. I’m heading out for a bit." Feng Ling set down the hairdryer, ran her fingers through her hair, and quickly tied it into a ponytail before heading to the bedroom to change.
Since they were both girls, Feng Ling didn’t feel the need for privacy and left the door open.
Huangfu Miaomiao trailed after her like a little shadow, asking anxiously, "Where are you going? What are you going to do? When will you be back? Don’t you need to rest? Aren’t you tired?"
Feng Ling honestly didn’t feel tired. Her energy seemed exceptionally high. It was just that she’d eaten too much instant noodles during the night—all the same flavor—and was starting to feel a little sick from it.
"That’s too many questions. You can only ask one." Feng Ling pulled on a hoodie and a pair of athletic pants.
Huangfu Miaomiao looked like she wanted to say something but held back, her mouth opening and closing. With a conflicted expression, she watched Feng Ling fish an ID and a bank card out of her suitcase and head for the door.
Just as Feng Ling was about to leave, she finally couldn’t hold back any longer and rushed to the door. "What if you run into players outside?"
Feng Ling said, "Call the police~"
Huangfu Miaomiao: "..."
’How strange. It’s like a madman suddenly saying something a perfectly normal person would say.’
CLICK—
The front door shut.
Huangfu Miaomiao stared blankly at the door for a moment before dazedly returning to the sofa and sitting down.
The apartment was huge, and it felt even emptier after Feng Ling left. Huangfu Miaomiao felt a little lost.
She was starving, and her body was exhausted and heavy with sleep. She hadn’t had a proper rest since being captured by that fat man and thin man.
’The sofa here is so soft... maybe I should just sleep for a bit... But what if a player runs into the hidden Boss? I just finally found some stability; I don’t want anything to happen to Feng Ling!’
Huangfu Miaomiao opened the player forum and started carefully reading the day’s new posts.
She clicked on every single post with "Boss Hunt" or similar in the title, terrified that Feng Ling’s location would be exposed on the forum.
As she kept reading, the words seemed to blur together as if covered in paste, growing thick and abstract... Her eyelids began to feel heavy, and finally, she couldn’t fight it anymore. She lay down on the sofa and fell asleep.
...
...
When Feng Ling returned, Huangfu Miaomiao was fast asleep.
Her small, thin body was curled up on the sofa, her cheeks and mask obscured by her messy hair. Her severed arm was exposed, making her look especially pitiful. Although the wound itself had healed thanks to the injected medicine, the half of her arm that had been melted off would never grow back.
Feng Ling watched her for a moment. ’She’s like a puppy,’ she thought.
She actually quite liked small animals. It was just that, for as long as she could remember, stray cats and dogs would always give her a wide berth, and animals in pet shops would snarl at the sight of her. As a result, she’d never had a proper Pet.
Who would have thought that she’d now end up raising an Alien Species.
Feng Ling placed the children’s clothes, shoes, and socks she had bought on the side of the sofa, then sat down nearby and took out her new phone.
—That Super Strong Chao had wanted to add her to a group chat, which was inconvenient without a phone. So, she had gone out first thing in the morning, found an ATM to withdraw cash, then went to a mobile service provider to set up a plan. She even got a supplementary card for Huangfu Miaomiao. All in all, she’d been busy the entire morning.
Feng Ling installed the usual apps and joined Super Strong Chao’s group chat.
As soon as she joined, she saw someone complaining that there wasn’t enough time to buy a suitable train ticket.
Super Strong Chao said: Can’t you just buy a plane ticket?
The person shot back: You want me to buy a plane ticket when we don’t even have a solid lead on the Alien Species? Throwing away a few thousand yuan before I’ve even seen a cent of the reward money? Do you think the rest of us have money to burn?
’He has a point,’ Feng Ling thought.
The next second, Super Strong Chao kicked the person out of the group chat.
[Super Strong Chao: We’re entering the tunnel by 7 AM tomorrow at the latest! If you can’t make it, leave the group yourself!]
[Super Strong Chao: Everyone who’s staying, change your name to your forum ID so we can recognize each other!]
A few people left the group one after another.
In the end, only six people remained.
Someone named "Energetic Girl Li Kui" said in the chat: Why don’t we just do it tonight? The sooner we finish, the sooner we get paid.
Super Strong Chao seemed to be in a hurry too. He asked everyone: How about tonight? Can everyone make it?
Feng Ling glanced at the soundly sleeping Huangfu Miaomiao and replied: That’s too short notice. Let’s stick with 7 AM tomorrow.
[Super Strong Chao: 7 AM it is, then! Get to the Jiangkou City train station first. I’ll send the exact location at 6 AM tomorrow! Don’t be late!]
Jiangkou City was a small, fourth-tier city very close to Qingjiang City. The drive was only two hours.
Feng Ling opened the map app on her phone, selected Jiangkou City, and zoomed in.
The terrain was relatively flat, with no major industries like coal or iron mining. Just from the map, it was impossible to tell where an underground tunnel might be.
"Guess I can’t scout the location ahead of time~" Feng Ling was a little disappointed.
Even though she couldn’t scout the location, she still needed to get her supplies ready. The lighting in the tunnel would probably be terrible, if there was any at all. She’d need to buy emergency lights and flashlights, sturdy rope, and non-slip shoes. Things like a hammer, axe, and shovel would be good too—they could be used as both tools and weapons...
Feng Ling’s finger slid across the screen as product images from an online store filled her view.
’Why isn’t anything cheaper? An axe for eighteen hundred? Why don’t they just rob people instead?’
DING—
A text message notification popped up:
[Your electronic bank account was credited with 1,000,000 yuan at 10:25 on May 11.]
Feng Ling froze for a second.
She tapped ’Place Order’ and confirmed the payment.
An axe priced at eighteen hundred. The seller must have their reasons.
