Chapter 17: Chapter 15: Just die

Huangfu Miaomiao’s face flushed, turning from pale to crimson, and she trembled all over—it was impossible to tell if from fear or rage. She clenched her fists and screamed, "This isn’t fair! It’s not fair! Every word I said is true! I didn’t lie, you can’t kill me!"

She was on the verge of going mad with indignation. The faint, shimmering Bone Blade was nearly touching her neck!

And the Feng Ling before her was like a heartless executioner. One moment, she had been friendly enough to lend her clothes; the next, she was about to kill her!

And yet, she couldn’t sense a shred of malice from Feng Ling!

’This psycho!’

’This lunatic!’

’If I’d known this would happen, I never should have been so clever and tried to work with a human! Humans hate players to their very core. They’ll do anything to find an excuse to kill me. I’m such an idiot!’

Overcome with regret and remorse, Huangfu Miaomiao broke down, wailing, "I stayed up all night gathering intel for you! Why won’t you believe me?! He’s the one who’s lying! He’s lying!!!"

Feng Ling tilted her head, admiring the tears gushing from the skull’s eye sockets. A smirk played on her lips. "Still putting up a brave front."

Huangfu Miaomiao fell deeper into despair. She knew no amount of arguing would help. Her heart turning to ash, she closed her eyes.

The savage face of the fat man who had brutally interrogated her flashed through her mind, and her tears flowed uncontrollably.

’I’m going to die. This time, I’m really going to die.’

’I don’t have enough points to rebuild my account. Even if I log off, I’ll still die.’

’So let me die...’

’So let me die...’

’Maybe it’s better this way. No more hiding. No more doing quests and hoarding points. No more groveling just to stay alive in a world where I don’t even belong...’

’So, just let me die...’

’Just die...’

’Just... die...’

Huangfu Miaomiao: "...?"

She waited for what felt like an eternity, but nothing happened.

She opened her eyes to see Feng Ling nonchalantly browsing a forum.

Huangfu Miaomiao touched her own neck, feeling a bit dazed. "You’re not going to kill me?"

"Why would I kill you? I was just messing with you." Feng Ling’s gaze dropped back to the forum, scrolling through the replies to the post. Quite a few people were already asking how to join.

Some people in the thread were also asking questions: Why not report this to the Alien Species Safety Inspection Bureau?

Super Strong Chao’s reply was: Small cities have no one to manage them, they can only rely on the support of civilian forces.

There was truth to that. Even Qingjiang City was facing a personnel shortage; smaller, third- and fourth-tier cities could barely fend for themselves.

Of the hundreds of cities in the country, less than a third had successfully established an Alien Supervision Branch.

Feng Ling chimed in on the thread.

[Dou Sha: I have a Card, count me in.]

Huangfu Miaomiao watched her type, her gaze dark. Still not ready to give up, she insisted, "He’s lying."

"I know." Feng Ling refreshed the page and found a new private message.

She opened it. It was a friend request from that same Super Strong Chao.

Feng Ling accepted the friend request.

"You know he’s lying, and you’re still adding him as a friend?" Huangfu Miaomiao was not happy. This was the person who had caused Feng Ling to scare her half to death just moments ago.

Feng Ling just smiled, unfazed. "Alien Species can use Recovery Potions when they’re injured. If they’re hurt too badly, they can just log off and get a new body. It makes no sense for them to gather in groups after getting wounded. What would be the point? What’s their objective? Are they all just lining up, waiting for a Doctor to come heal them? This Super Strong Chao is either hiding key information or his whole story is bullshit, designed to lure a large group of Card-holding humans to one spot. If that’s the case... things are about to get interesting..."

She sent Super Strong Chao a simple "Hello" before turning back to Huangfu Miaomiao. "Just think, what happens when you gather a bunch of Card-holding humans in one place?"

Huangfu Miaomiao was stunned for a moment, her eyes widening slightly. "You mean, this person called Super Strong Chao... is a player? He wants to steal Cards?!"

"It’s very likely," Feng Ling said.

Just then, he replied.

[Super Strong Chao: What’s your Card Ability? We’re all about teamwork here. If your Card Ability isn’t a good fit, we can’t take you.]

’Online at five in the morning and replies instantly. Someone’s in a hurry.’ Feng Ling’s lips curved into a slight smile as she typed her reply.

[Dou Sha: What kind of abilities do you guys need? If I’m not a good fit, I won’t be a bother, heh.]

Huangfu Miaomiao glanced silently at Feng Ling. ’That typing style... it’s just way too friendly and cheerful.’

[Super Strong Chao: We’ve already got a healer and a main attacker. We’re looking for support now.]

[Dou Sha: (^_^) Oh, then I can help! My Card is a Jellyfish, and it can grow transparent tentacles~]

...

The man holding the phone muttered, "Jellyfish? What kind of Card is a Jellyfish?"

His companion beside him whispered, his voice trembling, "Chao... It... It’s awake..."

The man called Chao raised his head and looked toward the shadows in the depths of the cave. From there, a ghastly pale, dead face slowly emerged.

A hoarse, bizarre, gurgling sound sputtered from the dead mouth as sticky corpse fluid dribbled from its lips—

"Not... enough..." GURGLE... "Still... not... enough..."

This face once belonged to their companion, but now it had become a mouthpiece for the monster to speak.

Chao swallowed nervously, his knees threatening to buckle. "I’ve already called for people. They’ll be here soon, very soon."

In the gloom, the face’s rotting lips parted. "Need... more..." GURGLE... "More Cards..."

"I know," Chao bit out. "The people I’ve summoned this time are all humans with Cards. I promise you’ll be satisfied!"

The face slowly receded, melting into the deeper darkness until it was gone.

The two men in the cave huddled close together. It was a long time before either of them dared to move.

"Fuck..." Chao wiped the cold sweat from his face, the curse a weak attempt to dispel his terror.

His companion whispered, his voice choked with tears, "Maybe... maybe we should just report it... Get the Inspection Bureau here..."

"What bullshit are you spouting! What if the Inspection Bureau can’t kill it? Do you think it’ll spare us?! Besides, no risk, no reward! Look over there—"

Chao pointed to the other side of the cave.

Near the rock wall, several bodies were lying around haphazardly.

"See that? Those are all wanted Alien Species fugitives. I recognize their faces! If we just bring those bodies out of here, we can collect at least ten million in bounties! We’ll be multi-millionaires! We’ll be on top of the world!"

He stared at the Alien Species corpses as if they were a pile of treasure, and his breath grew ragged.

"...So what if a few people die? As long as we keep the monster fed, this cave will become our own personal money printer. Every man for himself. Those idiots from the forum have no right to blame me. If they’re going to blame anyone, they should blame their own useless Cards."

Chao took a deep breath, his fingers jabbing at the phone screen as he muttered, "I’m a patriot, too. I want to protect the world. But protecting the world requires sacrifice. And since the strong, who fight the Alien Species, can’t be the ones sacrificed, the useless weaklings have to step up and prove their worth. So... I’m choosing you, you worthless Jellyfish."

DING—

Feng Ling received a private message on the forum.

[Super Strong Chao: Alright, I’m adding you to the group chat. Keep an eye out for announcements.]
