Chapter 16: Chapter 14: Alien Star Forum

It was already late into the night when Feng Ling arrived at Brocade Garden Mansion.

She wanted to conduct an experiment: to test just how much food she could eat.

So before coming to the apartment, she first went home to pack a few changes of clothes and grab her essential documents. She also emptied her refrigerator and cupboards of all their food.

Feng Ling found Su Yuqing’s apartment using the number engraved on the key. When she opened the door, she couldn’t help but marvel:

"It really is nice to be rich."

Massive floor-to-ceiling windows, magnificent crystal chandeliers, a plush, cloud-like sofa, and solid wood floors throughout.

Her old, cramped apartment wasn’t even half the size of Su Yuqing’s living room.

But the apartment clearly hadn’t been occupied in a long time. The air inside was stale, and a layer of dust covered the furniture.

Feng Ling didn’t mind at all. She happily explored the apartment, opening the windows to let in fresh air. Then, she began to examine the smart appliances and the complete set of high-end cookware in the kitchen.

Huangfu Miaomiao wasn’t just sitting around, either.

Feng Ling found an unused tablet in one of the rooms and plugged it in to charge. She told Huangfu Miaomiao to enter the forum data she had compiled into the notepad app, telling her she could use voice-to-text if she couldn’t type.

Huangfu Miaomiao’s head was already spinning from all the information back in the car. She never imagined Feng Ling would have no intention of letting her rest, putting her to work the moment they arrived.

Considering this was a chance to earn her boss’s trust, Huangfu Miaomiao gritted her teeth and decided to pull an all-nighter—

At two in the morning, Huangfu Miaomiao was feverishly entering data while Feng Ling washed and cooked rice.

At three in the morning, Huangfu Miaomiao struggled to enter data while Feng Ling boiled frozen dumplings.

At four in the morning, a drowsy Huangfu Miaomiao was still entering data. Feng Ling popped some frozen Baozi in the microwave and boiled a large kettle of water for instant noodles.

At five in the morning, day broke.

After eating until she was mostly full, Feng Ling went to brush her teeth and take a shower. She emerged from the bathroom in a robe, drying her long, damp hair with a towel. She sat down beside Huangfu Miaomiao and asked, "Are you done?"

"I... guess so..." Huangfu Miaomiao said, sporting a pair of deep, dark circles under her eyes. "There’s just so much information about the Cards, and it’s all a mess. Plus, it changes based on a Card’s core attributes. I can’t be sure if this information is completely accurate, but I did my best to organize it..."

Feng Ling picked up the tablet and scanned through the text, taking in ten lines at a glance. There were plenty of typos, but it was fine. They didn’t hinder comprehension.

"Information asymmetry can have fatal consequences, you know. If you deliberately falsified this data, distorted the facts, and tricked me into making the wrong call, I could very well end up dead because of it," Feng Ling said with a smile, her eyes still on the screen.

"I didn’t!" Huangfu Miaomiao’s eyes shot open. She looked completely aggrieved.

This was the fruit of a full night’s sleepless labor! There isn’t a single fabricated detail in there!

"What’s the rush? I was just making a casual remark," Feng Ling said with an easy smile. "We humans have our own forums, you know. There’s plenty of information about Cards on them. I can compare what you’ve given me with what’s on there. If I find any contradictions, it’ll just prove you’re being dishonest, and I’ll kill you. Of course, if you fix it right now, I can pretend this never happened."

"Go on, compare them!" Huangfu Miaomiao couldn’t stand being falsely accused. "If there are any contradictions, it must be because the information on your human forums is wrong! I didn’t falsify a thing!"

Feng Ling gave her a cryptic smile. "Is that right? Well, I’ll take a look then. Go take a shower."

Huangfu Miaomiao stomped off to the bathroom in a huff.

Feng Ling averted her gaze, turning her attention back to the complex data in the notepad.

The information seemed quite comprehensive. Unfortunately, the little Alien Species didn’t know the first thing about categorizing or formatting. All the content was crammed together, making it a headache to read.

As she read, she broke the text into paragraphs, corrected typos, added headings, and highlighted keywords in red...

—Cards are a product of genetic technology.

—Gene fusion brings about evolution, but also pollution.

—Low-level Cards aren’t necessarily weak, and High-level Cards aren’t necessarily strong. However, the evolutionary ceiling of High-level Cards is definitively superior to that of low-level and Mid-tier Cards.

...

After reading through most of it without realizing how much time had passed, she switched to her browser and logged into the Alien Star forum.

Huangfu Miaomiao, finished with her shower, came back to the living room wrapped in a towel. She said awkwardly, "I don’t have any clothes to change into."

"Wear mine for now. Find something in my suitcase," Feng Ling replied without looking up.

A moment later, she heard the sound of scurrying footsteps. After a short while, the scurrying returned. "Can I wear this?"

Feng Ling looked up and had to suppress a laugh.

Huangfu Miaomiao had chosen a baggy, gray t-shirt, but her frame was so petite that it hung on her like a giant sack. Combined with the skull mask she still wore, the look was utterly ridiculous.

Feng Ling had already learned from Huangfu Miaomiao’s data that ’players’ (Alien Species) were influenced by their Cards, causing them to behave in ways that matched their Card’s attributes.

Huangfu Miaomiao’s fondness for wearing a skull mask was a vivid example.

A Demon naturally loves to instigate, intimidate, obfuscate, and pull pranks. Huangfu Miaomiao was just too timid. Had anyone else possessed this Card, there’s no telling what kind of trouble they’d be causing by now.

’Feng Ling figured she was probably being influenced by her Card, too. Why else, upon seeing Huangfu Miaomiao’s pitiful, aggrieved expression, would the thought ’I should raise it’ have popped into her head?’

’Just what you’d expect from the "Mother of the World"...’

’My Card couldn’t be a Holy Mother, could it?’ Feng Ling propped her chin on her hand, pictured it, and found the idea even more absurd.

"What are you laughing at?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked, a hint of irritation in her voice. But her fear of Feng Ling kept her from sounding too confrontational. "I’ll give this back after I wash my own clothes tomorrow."

Feng Ling continued browsing the forum. "You can keep it."

Just then, her gaze fell upon a post with a striking headline: [LOOKING FOR PARTNERS TO SLAUGHTER ALIEN SPECIES! CARD HOLDERS ONLY!]

Feng Ling clicked to read more.

The poster’s IP address was very close to her location. His nickname was "Super Strong Chao." He said he had accidentally discovered an underground tunnel where many sick and injured Alien Species were hiding.

This Super Strong Chao wanted to assemble a team to wipe out all the Alien Species in the tunnel and claim the hefty reward money. He also claimed his Card was Golden Grass, which could heal people, and that he would guarantee the safety of every team member.

Feng Ling glanced at the data recorded by Huangfu Miaomiao. "Cards are a product of genetic technology and can be divided into insect-type Low-level cards, animal-type Mid-level Cards, and character-type High-level Cards... The data you provided doesn’t mention plant-type cards. Is this one of those ’errors’ you mentioned? Or did you hide it on purpose?"

Huangfu Miaomiao’s eyes went wide. "...Plant-type? There are no plant-type Cards at all."

Feng Ling maintained her smile. "Well, what should we make of this, then? Someone is claiming their Card is Golden Grass, and that it has a rapid healing ability."

"That’s impossible!" Huangfu Miaomiao shot to her feet. "He’s lying! Fusing plant genes with a human body has severe side effects. The only thing that’s been achieved so far is a human gene tree, but those trees are used as tombstones! They can’t speak or think; they’re just trees with a human form! A Card like that can’t possibly exist in the game!"

"Is that so?" Feng Ling tilted her head, still smiling at her. "But what can I do? I have to trust my own kind."

Huangfu Miaomiao froze at her words.

Suddenly, bone burst from Feng Ling’s shoulder like a bamboo shoot breaking through soil. It then slowly unfurled, forming a nearly transparent, scythe-like Bone Blade that hovered right above Huangfu Miaomiao’s head.
