Chapter 15: Chapter 13: Too Hungry
On a deserted highway late at night, Feng Ling’s small truck finally veered off course.
She was hungry again.
She could endure pain, but she really couldn’t stand the hunger.
She never knew being hungry could be such torture. Her stomach was completely empty, as if she hadn’t eaten in eight hundred years. She was so hungry it felt like she was about to digest herself from the inside out, so hungry that even her brain was dazed.
Su Yuqing had said his apartment was always empty, so there probably wasn’t any food there. Feng Ling could only search along the streets for a place to eat.
Ever since the Alien Species began to run rampant, many shops closed as soon as it got dark. She searched for a very, very long time before finding a vending machine by the side of the road.
The vending machine was mostly full of drinks. Only the bottom row had a few boxes of self-heating rice.
Feng Ling bought all of them.
She climbed into the back of the truck, clutching the self-heating rice. She tore open the packages one by one and poured mineral water into each—the heating packs reacted quickly with the water, starting to steam.
Feng Ling sat in the truck bed, staring intently at her food.
Huangfu Miaomiao cowered in a corner of the truck bed, not daring to make a sound—she was still agonizing over whether she had made the wrong decision.
Although she hadn’t sensed any malice from Feng Ling, the oppressive and dangerous feeling the woman gave off lingered in her heart, growing stronger rather than fading.
’But what can I do? My Demon Card is too weak in its initial state, yet it’s a High-level Card. Because of this, every player I’ve tried to befriend—not a single one has sincerely wanted to team up with me. They all just want to steal my Card!’
’I desperately need protection, or I won’t survive!’
’Will this woman in front of me protect me?’
’...She probably will, right? Players kill other players for Cards, for points, or even for the fun of it. But when humans kill players, it’s usually because of hatred.’
’So, as long as I don’t cause trouble or make any mistakes, she won’t have a reason to kill me, right?’
’Besides, I can detect malice. The moment I sense something is wrong, I’ll run! Yes, that’s it! As long as I do that, I’ll be safe!’
Huangfu Miaomiao’s mind was a mess of thoughts about her future.
Just then, Feng Ling suddenly asked her, "Know what this is?"
Huangfu Miaomiao froze for a moment. Following Feng Ling’s finger, she looked at the steaming self-heating rice and, after a two-second hesitation, answered, "Self-heating rice?"
"Wrong," Feng Ling replied.
Huangfu Miaomiao: "???"
’Even though I’ve only been logged in as a human for less than two months, I can still read! The box clearly said: Fish-Fragrant Pork Self-Heating Rice!’
"This is a weapon," Feng Ling said, pointing at the food container. "The heating pack releases a massive amount of thermal energy very quickly, making the water boil. If you were to flip this container onto my face right now, my eyes would be instantly scalded, and my respiratory tract would choke on some of the boiling water. The blindness and pain would make it impossible for me to pinpoint your location. You could use that opportunity to escape the truck bed. I’d hear the noise and instinctively give chase. Then you could circle around to the front, get into the driver’s seat, reverse quickly, and run me over. You’d crush me to death, obtaining my points and my Card—speaking of which, do you know how to drive?"
After she finished speaking, Feng Ling looked at Huangfu Miaomiao, her eyes shining as if she were expecting something.
Huangfu Miaomiao: "..."
’What are you talking about?!!’
’Ahhh!!!’
’Didn’t we just agree to work together?! Why are you still saying such terrifying things! Can you please stop testing me?!!’
"I—I don’t know how to drive!" Huangfu Miaomiao stammered, her mind in chaos.
She thought she saw a hint of regret on Feng Ling’s face.
"That’s a shame." Feng Ling looked away, her gaze returning to the food container. "I’ll teach you some other day. Driving is a very useful skill."
Huangfu Miaomiao: "..."
’I don’t want to learn!’
’And I don’t want to kill a Boss!’
’I know you’re testing me, so just give it up! I’m not going to fall for it!’
Feng Ling’s meal finished heating up.
She snapped apart a pair of disposable bamboo chopsticks and glanced at Huangfu Miaomiao again. Her eyes were full of encouragement, as if to say, ’Are you sure you don’t want to give it a try?’
Huangfu Miaomiao turned her head away, shrinking further into the corner.
Looking a little disappointed, Feng Ling opened the container and began to eat by herself.
She ate slowly, intentionally observing her body’s reaction. After eating three boxes in a row, the burning sensation of hunger in her stomach had only slightly subsided. She still felt hungry.
Feng Ling kept eating.
The food went down her esophagus into her stomach, where it was rapidly broken down and digested. After downing a total of eight boxes of self-heating rice, she was finally no longer starving, but she couldn’t find any distinct feeling of fullness either.
This frustrated her a little.
’My monthly salary was originally just enough to get by. Now it’s this hard just to feel full. How am I going to manage in the future?’
’I really hope that bonus arrives soon.’
Feng Ling sighed, feeling sorry for herself. She packed up the empty containers, threw them into a roadside trash can, and then began to ponder the matter.
No matter how she thought about it, it didn’t make sense. The prompt she’d received was clear: "You possess a powerful physique and an endless supply of strength."
’Where is this endless supply of strength?’
’All I have right now is an endless appetite.’
Especially after her body had consumed energy to heal her wounds, the hunger she felt was bone-deep and unforgettable! ’...Could it be that the "endless supply of strength" has to be obtained through eating?’
’There’s no such thing as perpetual energy in this world. Even the sun will one day collapse and die out.’
’But if energy can be accumulated in large quantities, once it reaches a certain point, could it create the illusion of being "endless"?’
Feng Ling found her line of reasoning quite interesting and worth testing.
After a moment of thought, she knocked on the wall of the truck bed and said, "Come on, we’re going back to my place to move some things."
"...Huh?" Huangfu Miaomiao peeked out from the truck bed, half her skull mask visible. She was very surprised. "G-Go home?"
Feng Ling was already in the driver’s seat.
Huangfu Miaomiao jumped out of the truck bed and scrambled into the passenger seat. While buckling her seatbelt, she asked, "Won’t it be dangerous? What if the player who went offline finds backup and comes to your place for revenge?"
Feng Ling started the engine, her hands on the steering wheel. "If she was going to find backup, why didn’t she bring them with her to the Inspection Bureau to kill me in the first place?"
Huangfu Miaomiao was stunned for a moment. "She went to the Inspection Bureau to kill you? But that’s not what she said. She said she went to the Inspection Bureau to scavenge for scraps. She never mentioned encountering a hidden Boss... Ah! I get it now!"
Huangfu Miaomiao had a sudden realization. "She didn’t want to share the points with anyone else! That’s why she hid the information!"
Feng Ling asked curiously, "How many points am I worth?"
"I don’t know the exact amount, but for a Boss-Level target, it would be at least 3,000 points, I think," Huangfu Miaomiao replied.
Feng Ling asked again, "Then how many points do you usually earn from missions?"
"6 points. I got lucky last week and got a 10-point mission!" Huangfu Miaomiao said with a satisfied look on her face.
Feng Ling: "..."
She wanted to sarcastically say, ’How impressive,’ but then she remembered her position as a human, and it became hard to comment.
’Forget it.’
The two of them chatted idly in the truck, completely unaware that someone else was waiting, about to explode with rage—
At the entrance to the Brocade Garden Mansion complex, a man with messy hair was squatting by his motorcycle, talking on the phone:
"Su Yuqing, can you be a little more reliable?! I’ve been waiting downstairs at the apartment building for almost two hours and haven’t seen a damn soul! Shit, did you tip her off and tell her to hide?! You made me waste two hours of sleep. I’m gonna kill her!"
Su Yuqing stared at the traffic surveillance footage, hesitated, wanting to say something but stopping himself, and finally just hung up the phone in silence.
