Chapter 24: Chapter 22: Bug Lair
A story full of holes.
’If you fell into a hole and couldn’t climb out, shouldn’t your first instinct be to call for help? Who would have the courage to venture into a pitch-black cavern, and just happen to have a flashlight on hand?’
Feng Ling listened in silence as the two brothers spouted their nonsense.
Zhou Diao must have also sensed something was off. He frowned and asked them, "Then who closed the roll-up door outside?"
If they both fell into the hole, why was the garage door closed?
But Chao shook his head. "I don’t know. Maybe the parking garage attendant saw the big hole here and closed the door so no one else would fall in."
The answer didn’t satisfy Zhou Diao, but he didn’t press further. His eyes remained fixed on the deeper parts of the cavern, ever vigilant.
The damp air carried a putrid stench.
Who knew what dangers lurked in the darkness.
After they had walked for some time, the path grew steeper, and the air became increasingly foul and murky. Besides the sound of their footsteps, there was only a faint, almost imperceptible sound of breathing.
Perhaps unable to bear the oppressive silence, Qin Liang spoke in a low voice, "This cave is all pitted and uneven. It doesn’t look man-made."
"Mmm," Xiao Li agreed. "If it were dug by people, it would be relatively smooth."
But if it wasn’t man-made, what could have dug it?
With varied expressions, the group fell silent once more.
"Ouch!"
Cao Hongyi, the tallest of the group, clutched his forehead where he had bumped it on a protruding rock above.
Zhou Diao said in a low, stern voice, "Everyone, be careful."
Chao, who was walking at the very front, said, "We’re almost there. It gets a lot easier to walk after the next slope."
Feng Ling glanced at her phone—
No signal.
This cave was deeper and narrower than she had imagined. There was no telling where it led.
Behind her, Huangfu Miaomiao followed without a word. Feng Ling could only guess how terrified she must be.
After walking another few dozen meters, the group came to a halt. Feng Ling waited for a moment before the people in front of her began to jump down, one by one.
The sounds of their landings were clear. It seemed they had reached a lower platform.
When it was Feng Ling’s turn, she shone her flashlight down. Below was indeed a flat surface, less than a meter from the edge.
She jumped down lightly and swept her flashlight in a circle.
Before her was an exceptionally wide, nearly oval-shaped cavern, about the size of a basketball court. The rock walls were dotted with several dark openings.
Humans wouldn’t excavate something in such a strange shape.
Feng Ling thought it looked like an insect nest.
"The Alien Species are in here," Chao said, walking a few steps forward and pointing to one of the openings. "There are a lot of them inside."
Zhou Diao stepped forward suspiciously to check.
On the other side of the opening was a slightly smaller cave, about the size of a typical classroom.
Inside lay four or five figures. Just as Chao had said, they looked like severely ill and injured Alien Species. They had lost their basic mobility, rolling their bodies over deliriously and breathing shallowly. They didn’t seem to react even when the bright flashlights shone on them. Their eyes were completely clouded over, unable to see.
Chao was very pleased with himself. "See? I wasn’t lying, was I? You brought rope. After we kill these Alien Species, we can tie up the bodies one by one, drag them all the way back to the parking garage along the path we just took, and then call the Inspection Bureau to claim the bounty. An easy tens of millions."
"Why make it so complicated?" Feng Ling asked, confused. "Wouldn’t it be easier to just call the Inspection Bureau and have them come into the cave to collect the bodies? Otherwise, we’d have to waste energy dragging the Alien Species out one by one. That’s unnecessary, isn’t it?"
Chao was taken aback. He looked at Feng Ling. "...Of course not! How could one person kill so many Alien Species? Anyone could tell something was wrong right away. That’s why I called you all here. We’ll drag a few Alien Species out first, collect the money, wait a week or two, then come back and drag a few more out. Even if the Inspection Bureau questions us, they’d never guess there’s a whole nest of sick Alien Species hidden here."
’He really thinks he’s got it all planned out,’ Feng Ling thought, amused.
She called Huangfu Miaomiao over. "Take a look."
Huangfu Miaomiao stuck close to Feng Ling. She peeked her head out for a single glance before shrinking back behind her and forcefully pulling Feng Ling backward.
"What’s wrong?" Feng Ling asked.
Huangfu Miaomiao’s lips parted. In a small voice, she said, "They’re all dead..."
Feng Ling glanced at the Alien Species in the cave, then turned back to Huangfu Miaomiao. "Be clear. Who’s dead?"
"Them..." Huangfu Miaomiao pointed into the cave, her voice trembling. "All of them. They’re all dead."
"Dead?" Zhou Diao frowned, looking at the Alien Species on the ground.
Qin Liang and the others also found it unbelievable.
"They’re still moving. Why do you say they’re dead?"
"I don’t know..." Huangfu Miaomiao clutched Feng Ling’s clothes, her voice trembling. "I’m not lying. I can only identify living creatures, but those... those are all corpses. It must be the work of a Pollution Body. Let’s get out of here, quickly."
Chao heard that something was wrong. Standing by the cave entrance, he eyed them suspiciously. "What Pollution Body? Who exactly are you people?"
No one paid him any attention.
Zhou Diao took two steps forward, grabbed one of the Alien Species from the ground, and violently flung it out of the opening!
WITH A THUD, the Alien Species’ body slammed heavily onto the ground. The flesh and bone inside seemed to slosh around with the impact, making a gurgling sound. A translucent, pale yellow mucus oozed from its mouth and nose.
Now that it was so close, the group realized that it was clearly a corpse!
Huangfu Miaomiao hadn’t been wrong. This Alien Species was well and truly dead.
Chao and Fang Ye were equally shocked at the sight.
Although the two of them had been staking this place out for two days, they had never dared to get close. Combined with the limited lighting, they had seen the figures moving from a distance and mistakenly thought they were alive. Who would have thought they were dead! All of them!
The three members of the Special Attack Team were on high alert. They quickly drew their guns and aimed at the bizarre, ceaselessly writhing corpse!
Feng Ling said, "Don’t shoot. There’s something else in this cave. A gunshot would be too loud."
Zhou Diao grabbed another corpse from the cave and threw it over. "Right, hold your fire for now. Qin Liang, record this!"
"I’ve been recording the whole time," Qin Liang replied in a low voice.
There was a miniature camera under his headlamp that could transmit a real-time feed to Su Yuqing.
Even without a network signal, it could store the video and audio on a built-in chip. After the mission, this data would be submitted to the research department for analysis.
The corpse on the ground jiggled violently, as if all the flesh and bone beneath its skin had melted into liquid, or as if some creature was writhing and churning within its dermal layer.
Everyone was disgusted.
Feng Ling stroked the axe in her hand and asked Zhou Diao, "Can I give it a couple of whacks?"
"Don’t do anything rash!" Zhou Diao shot back, his expression fierce. "Follow my orders!"
Feng Ling’s lips twitched into a silent smirk.
This was one of the reasons she was reluctant to join the Inspection Bureau.
"There’s... there’s something!" Xiao Li’s arms, gripping her gun, tensed up. She stared at the corpse before them and shouted, "Something is crawling out!"
