Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 29 - 27: Silence Is the Prelude to DeathChapter 29: Chapter 27: Silence Is the Prelude to Death
"It kills using sound?!"
Fang Ye suddenly spoke up from within the group.
Feng Ling glanced at him in surprise. This follower of Super Strong Chao had barely registered. Even when he’d fallen earlier and gotten his face covered in blood, no one had paid him any mind.
Having spoken, Fang Ye was immediately embarrassed.
He was like an outsider who had just interrupted a private family meeting. He timidly shrank back, wishing he could find a hole to crawl into.
A small pack of wet wipes suddenly landed in his lap.
Fang Ye froze for a second. Looking up, he saw that Feng Ling had thrown them.
"Clean yourself up," Feng Ling said.
A warm feeling washed over Fang Ye. He nodded like a chick pecking at grain. "Thank you, thank you..."
He tore open the packaging, and by the time he looked up at Feng Ling again, her attention had already shifted back to Zhou Diao and Xiao Li as she resumed discussing their strategy.
"Every line in the mission prompt is important. ’Silence is the prelude to death’ matches this Pollution Body’s attack pattern. Before each attack, the insect swarm either dies off or retreats, making the cavern quiet. That makes our voices stand out."
"You mean it locates us by sound? So if we don’t make any noise, the Pollution Body can’t attack us? Is that it?"
"It’s possible. So far, the Pollution Body hasn’t launched a single continuous attack. It always retreats back into its hole immediately after an ambush, which means it knows it’s no match for us when there’s light."
"...So we need to make sure our lighting equipment doesn’t fail. As long as we have light, we have a chance of winning!"
"But what about those insects? There are too many of them. They could easily destroy our lighting equipment in the chaos."
"No matter how many insects there are, their numbers can’t be infinite. If there were really a massive nest down here, Jiangkou City would have seen a huge spike in missing persons cases long ago."
...
Fang Ye silently watched them talk.
Qin Liang, who was next to him, struck up a quiet conversation. "You’re pretty sharp. I didn’t even think about the Pollution Body attacking based on sound. By the way, what’s your name?"
Fang Ye had actually introduced himself when they first met, but no one had paid attention.
"My name is Fang Ye..." He paused, his gaze unconsciously flicking toward Feng Ling. "The ’Fang’ for ambition and the ’Ye’ for wild, open plains."
Feng Ling was still focused on the strategy meeting and didn’t notice.
Qin Liang smiled. "That’s not a bad name. Mine’s no good. My grandpa picked it. Back in the day, my grandpa..."
"Qin Liang, get over here," Zhou Diao interrupted their idle chat. "Pull up the topographical map from the scanner."
"Coming."
Qin Liang opened the black, boxy case and pulled up a 3D topographical image.
Judging from the 3D image, the structure of this underground nest was far simpler than they had imagined.
On one side was a regular rectangle, and on the other side was another regular rectangle.
A shape like this could only be a man-made underground parking garage.
Between the two underground garages was a massive pit. A rugged tunnel extended from each side of the pit, connecting to the two garages.
As for the cave openings they had seen, they were actually all interconnected. No matter which one they entered, they would all eventually lead to that single, rugged tunnel and end up at the central pit.
The only reason they had found the terrain so complex was because the poor lighting and low visibility had prevented their brains from making an accurate assessment.
Zhou Diao’s confidence grew after seeing the map. "As long as we can transmit this map data, Old Su can support us from the outside."
Qin Liang pointed to the parking garage on the left side of the map. "We came down from here. Captain Su is always thorough; he’ll definitely have people guarding the entrance to this garage."
He then pointed to the garage on the right. "But if any of these insect monsters escape from the other garage, it will cause serious loss of life and property for the local citizens."
Zhou Diao took a deep breath. "Both sides are important," he said in a low voice. "We can’t let a single insect leave this nest. But who’s going to deliver the message?"
Everyone fell silent.
A few seconds later, everyone’s eyes landed on Feng Ling in unison.
Feng Ling stared at the 3D map without saying a word.
"Hey, what are you spacing out for?" Zhou Diao gave her a nudge.
Feng Ling snapped out of it. "Oh... the map looks a lot like a uterus, so I was staring at it."
Hearing this, the others all looked at the monitor again.
The shape of the map really did resemble a woman’s uterus.
Such a peculiar shape had to mean something.
Zhou Diao mused, "’Something must be in the deepest part of the ’uterus.’ I suspect that’s where the Insect Eggs or larvae are hidden. All the insects we’ve encountered have probably come from this ’uterus.’"
"Exactly." Qin Liang nodded emphatically and pointed to a data stream at the bottom of the screen. "At the very bottom of the pit, the life-sign data is extremely active. Even if there aren’t any Insect Eggs, there has to be some kind of special creature down there."
Zhou Diao thought for a moment, weighing the pros and cons before addressing the group. "We’ll rest here for ten minutes. After that, Qin Liang and I will head for the ’uterus.’ We’ll try to make a lot of noise to lure the Pollution Body back to its nest. Feng Ling, you use that opportunity to get the scanner data out. Everyone else, stay here on standby."
"I disagree!" Xiao Li straightened up. "I still have ammo. I can go with Qin Liang to support you!"
Cao Hongyi also spoke up. "Deputy Captain, let Xiao Li go. My leg may be broken, but I’ve still got two hands. I can protect myself if the insects come."
Cao Hongyi could tell that Zhou Diao was leaving Xiao Li behind to look after him.
Zhou Diao gritted his teeth, paced back and forth a few steps, and made his decision. "Fine! In ten minutes, Qin Liang and Xiao Li will go with me to the uterus. Anyone else have a problem with that?"
Zhou Diao then looked at Feng Ling. "Can you do it? Get the scanner data out."
’Feng Ling wanted to go see the ’uterus’ too.’
’But getting the data out and telling Su Yuqing to set up containment at both entrances was definitely more important. Otherwise, while she and Zhou Diao were down here slaughtering monsters, the insects would be staging a mass exodus topside. If even one escaped, the consequences would be immeasurable.’
’She wondered how Su Yuqing’s evacuation was going.’
’This was the time of day when the elderly went out for breakfast and morning exercises. Even if the insects didn’t bite, the shock alone could cause a string of heart attacks and spikes in blood pressure.’
After considering it, Feng Ling said, "I have a question."
Zhou Diao said irritably, "What is it? Spit it out!"
Feng Ling asked, "Why do we need to rest for ten minutes?"
Zhou Diao: "???"
Feng Ling glanced at everyone, confused. "Are you guys tired? Do you really need to rest that long?"
’If she remembered correctly, they had been in the cavern for less than half an hour. Why did they need a break already? Was their stamina really that bad?’
Zhou Diao roared at her, "So what if I’m tired?! Don’t you know that using a Card Ability drains a ton of stamina?! Are you trying to show off?! Putting on airs?! Acting all cool and detached?!?!?!"
Feng Ling hadn’t meant to provoke him.
She smiled, cracking her knuckles and stretching her shoulders. "I feel fine. If you’re not in great shape, why don’t I go to the uterus, and you deliver the message?"
Zhou Diao looked as if he had been gravely insulted. His eyes bulged as he roared, "I’m the captain!!!"
’A deputy captain is still a captain! You have to respect me!’
