Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 32 - 30: Can’t Wait for the Next LifeChapter 32: Chapter 30: Can’t Wait for the Next Life
’Could this be another effect the Card has on its holder?’ Feng Ling wondered.
What kind of Card did she even get?
Luckily, her current Pollution Value was only 7%. If the number were any higher and she was hit with this ravenous hunger again, she truly wasn’t sure what she might do.
Then Feng Ling had another thought: ’Maybe it wasn’t the Card’s fault. Maybe it was because my injuries were so severe. All the energy I’d stored from eating before was used to heal my wounds, so now I’m hungry again?’
She really couldn’t figure it out at all.
The space ahead suddenly brightened. The light was so intense that Feng Ling was momentarily blinded, like an actor on stage caught in a spotlight.
She heard a clamor of voices from above:
"Someone’s coming out!"
"Is it Zhou?"
"...It’s not the Deputy Captain."
"Why didn’t Zhou come out?"
...
Farther away, she could also hear an announcement from a megaphone: "...Please follow the guidance of the Alien Species Safety Inspection Bureau to evacuate. Do not panic. Board the vehicles in an orderly fashion. The Alien Species Inspection Team will do its utmost to protect the lives of our citizens... Now repeating the broadcast..."
"Feng Ling!"
Suddenly, someone called her name. It was Su Yuqing’s voice.
Feng Ling squinted, her eyes adjusting to the light. She looked up and saw Su Yuqing’s face at the opening above.
She remembered Zhou Diao’s instructions, took out the chip, and tossed it high up.
"A few hundred meters from here, there’s another parking garage. The underground nest is connected to both garages. The chip has a map of the terrain. Zhou Diao wants you to figure out a way to block the entrance to stop the bugs from crawling out," she explained concisely.
"I’ll handle it." Su Yuqing quickly asked, "How is Zhou Diao doing?"
"Not good. He might be done for." Feng Ling rubbed her eyes. "Can you give me that spotlight? And your megaphone."
...
...
...
The sound of exhausted panting was exceptionally clear in the vast, deep pit.
Zhou Diao struggled to pull his blood-drenched Beast Claw from the corpse. His vision was already growing blurry.
Shattered insect carapaces were piled around him, and the smell of gunpowder lingered in the air.
The one remaining flashlight illuminated a ten-meter-diameter area around him. In the darkness beyond those ten meters, there was no telling how many Pollution Bodies were waiting for him.
’How many has it been?’
’He’d been fighting for so long, he couldn’t remember...’
He had killed Pollution Bodies before. Back then, the city’s best Inspector, Ye Zheng, hadn’t been transferred yet. He had gone on missions with Ye Zheng, and every Pollution Body they encountered was a solitary individual, without a single exception.
Even the training materials provided by the Supervision Bureau had long passages arguing that Pollution Bodies lacked the intelligence for group coordination.
’Why is this time different?’
’Why is it different...’
Zhou Diao’s steps faltered. His breathing grew sluggish, and he felt so tired.
It was like being trapped in an endless war of attrition, an inexhaustible tide of enemies he could never finish killing. Just how many more were hiding in the darkness?
Exhaustion built up in every part of his body. His hands felt so heavy he could barely lift them. The Pollution Bodies were surely lurking nearby. He had to stay on high alert, but why was he so tired...
’It seems the Alien Species’s Little Jelly isn’t all that amazing after all; it only kept me sharp for a short while.’
A self-deprecating smile touched the corners of Zhou Diao’s mouth.
Suddenly, a foul gust of wind rushed at his face!
He retreated, swinging his claw at the pouncing shadow purely on instinct—
It was a human neck, stretched several meters long, ending in a mouth lined with hard mandibles. The rest of its body was almost completely insectoid.
Zhou Diao’s claw should have torn the long neck to shreds, but the prolonged battle had coated his Beast Claw in caked blood and viscous fluids, dulling its intended sharpness. The heavy muscles of his shoulders and arms also lacked their former strength, and this swipe only left behind a scratch.
Zhou Diao let out a breath and thought weakly, ’Have I reached my limit?’
’This can’t be it.’
’He was Qingjiang’s only combat-ready Inspector; he couldn’t fall. If he went down, Su Yuqing would surely be in a difficult position, wouldn’t she?’
Another shadow lunged.
Zhou Diao turned to dodge again, but he was too slow. A pair of mandibles instantly pierced through his waist!
His entire body was hoisted into the air by the monster. Immediately after, his right arm was torn open, clamped in the mandibles of another Pollution Body!
He couldn’t even feel much pain.
’Had his brain activated a defense mechanism, numbing all the pain?’
Zhou Diao thought in a daze, ’They aren’t planning to dismember me, are they?’
’I never thought my death would be this ugly... So not cool.’
A red glow appeared before his eyes.
His throat was full of a metallic sweetness.
He spat out a mouthful of blood, feeling like his body was about to be torn to pieces. He thought again, ’If I’d known, I wouldn’t have tried so hard. At least I could’ve had a quicker death.’
’...Well, at least he’d made his team retreat before he died. The map data from the scanner should be in Su Yuqing’s hands by now. Things weren’t a total disaster.’
As for his bitterness, his resentment, his regrets.
’Maybe in the next life.’
’In the next life, I’ll make up for them...’
The sound of hurried footsteps suddenly rang out, and an impact sent him falling to the ground!
Zhou Diao opened his eyes. Through his blood-hazed vision, he vaguely made out a few familiar figures. Rage instantly ignited in his heart, and he roared, "Who told you to come back?! Get out!"
He thought his tone was intimidating enough, but in reality, the words came out with a choke of blood, devoid of any force.
Xiao Li stabbed her short knife into the Pollution Body’s neck, viciously twisted the blade to force the creature to release its mandibles, and shouted, "Old Cao! Get Deputy Zhou out of here!"
Cao Hongyi rushed out from a corner and forcefully hoisted the half-human form of Zhou Diao onto his shoulders!
From a distance, Qin Liang used his few remaining bullets to provide covering fire for their retreat.
Zhou Diao erupted, "You bunch of idiots! You’re no match for them! Did you all run back here just to die?!"
Xiao Li gripped the hilt of her dagger, her voice filled with resentment. "It’s better for us to die than you! Don’t you always call yourself the god of Qingjiang City? Three of us for one god—it’s worth it!"
The neck under her blade twisted and contracted, flinging her away like a long-necked turtle thrashing in a river!
"Xiao Li!" Qin Liang cried out in alarm from a distance. He watched helplessly as Xiao Li fell outside the illuminated area. He couldn’t see anything in that patch of darkness, much less provide support.
"Idiots! Idiots! You stupid, stupid, stupid idiots!!!"
Enraged, Zhou Diao cursed and struggled, tumbling from Cao Hongyi’s shoulder.
He wanted to save Xiao Li, but his limbs wouldn’t obey him. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get up!
Cao Hongyi hoisted him back up and ran for the exit without a word.
Zhou Diao was going insane with rage. "Cao Hongyi! You motherfucker!!!"
Cao Hongyi was unmoved. His voice was as flat as a taut line as he repeated what Xiao Li had said earlier: "Deputy Captain, trading the three of us for one god... it’s worth it."
Zhou Diao wanted to curse again, but he choked on fresh blood and couldn’t get a single word out. Only hatred and indignation surged endlessly in his heart.
He hated it!
He hated it so much!—He hated these unkillable Pollution Bodies! He hated that he wasn’t strong enough!
’If I had just held on a little longer, just a little bit longer, maybe my team wouldn’t have had to be sacrificed!’
He couldn’t wait for the next life! He wanted to be stronger now! He wanted to protect this place and these people, right now!
ZING—
The dim pit suddenly became as bright as day.
The white light pierced his eyes, leaving Zhou Diao momentarily stunned.
The next second, he heard Feng Ling’s voice:
"Deputy Zhou, you’re not done for yet. Pretty impressive."
