Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 44 - 42: I Want to Enter the MazeChapter 44: Chapter 42: I Want to Enter the Maze
Feng Ling was just trying to figure out an excuse to ask the other person to meet when Su Yuqing suddenly called—
She answered the phone.
On the other end of the line, Su Yuqing spoke rapidly. "Are you the one who posted on the forum as Dou Sha?"
Feng Ling: "..."
’The Inspection Bureau is this fast?’
’This probably isn’t good. Maybe I shouldn’t admit it.’
Feng Ling started to deny it. "No..."
Before she could finish, she heard Su Yuqing say, "The network technicians traced the IP address for ’Dou Sha’ to Brocade Garden Mansion!"
"I... have to say," Feng Ling said sheepishly, "you guys are pretty accurate."
"Feng Ling!" Su Yuqing’s voice was filled with an exasperated anger, as if his composure had shattered. "Why haven’t you reported something this important to the Inspection Bureau! Do you have any idea how serious the consequences are?!"
Feng Ling was taken aback. "I didn’t know..."
"If I knew the consequences were serious, I would have reported it. It’s not like I hid it on purpose." She asked sincerely, "So, what are the consequences?"
"..." Su Yuqing almost choked on his words.
"Anyway..." He took a deep breath to calm himself. "Right now, you stay in your apartment and don’t go anywhere. I’m coming over immediately. From here on out, you’ll follow my arrangements!"
"That’s not going to work," Feng Ling refused. "I have things to do."
On the other end of the line, Su Yuqing stood in his office, his expression exceptionally grim. His blood pressure was soaring, and he was gripping his phone hard enough to break it.
After a full half-minute, he ground out through clenched teeth, "Wait for me to get there, and then we’ll discuss it!"
Since she was living in his house, after all, Feng Ling decided to be courteous. "Fine, then," she replied.
The call ended.
Feng Ling returned to her chat window with Li Daoist.
The other person hadn’t sent any messages.
’After such a long delay, would it be a bit abrupt to bring up a video call now?’
’Maybe next time... Yes, next time, when the conversation is flowing well, I’ll just go with it and suggest meeting up. I’m sure he won’t refuse.’
In a good mood, Feng Ling put down her phone. She glanced at the table full of leftover food containers and utensils, then turned to get a trash bag from the kitchen. Returning to the dining table, she packed the containers and bones into the bag one by one, then carried it downstairs to the dumpster.
Someone must have had their heart broken, because the dumpster contained a large bouquet of roses, complete with fresh baby’s breath and pretty wrapping paper.
They still smelled quite nice.
Humming a tune, Feng Ling carefully selected a few stems and brought them back up to her apartment to put in a vase.
When Su Yuqing arrived, she was arranging the flowers in the vase, looking utterly relaxed.
It made his frantic rush seem foolish by comparison.
His expression exceptionally grim, he walked to the sofa and sat down!
Next, Zhou Diao peeked in from behind the door and entered, wearing the expression of someone who enjoys watching a good show and doesn’t mind stirring the pot. He found a chair in the dining area and sat down.
Then came three familiar faces: Qin Liang, Xiao Li, and Cao Hongyi from the Special Attack Team. They walked in wearing civilian clothes, closed the door, and took up positions behind the sofa. On high alert, they drew guns from their bags.
Feng Ling watched them in surprise.
Fortunately, the apartment’s living room was spacious enough that it didn’t feel crowded even with so many people.
"Why are you all here?" Feng Ling asked. "Don’t you need to stay at the Inspection Bureau and wait for a mission?"
Su Yuqing, his face grim, remained seated on the sofa. "Waiting here is the same. If a mission comes up, it’ll probably be related to you anyway."
Feng Ling smiled. "Captain Su, that sounds a bit like stereotyping."
"Let’s get to the point," Zhou Diao said impatiently, curiously asking Feng Ling, "Old Su rushed me over here without explaining anything. What’s this all about a Hidden Boss? We’re all Card Holders, so how come you’re a Boss and I’m just an elite mob?"
"Stop applying the Alien Species’ terminology to yourself!" Su Yuqing snapped irritably, his tone harsh. "Possessing a Card makes you C-level. Possessing a High-level Card and completing one assimilation makes you B-level. Possessing a High-level Card and completing three or more assimilations makes you A-level!"
"Alright, alright, what I meant was why am I B-level..." Zhou Diao raised his hands in surrender, acting particularly obedient in the face of Su Yuqing’s fury. "Which level does a Hidden Boss fall under—A, B, or C? Feng Ling can’t be an S, can she?"
In any case, he was more concerned about why Feng Ling’s Level was higher than his.
"It seems to have something to do with the Card’s Skills." Feng Ling said, looking around. She found a tablet and handed it to Zhou Diao, showing him the forum posts that Huangfu Miaomiao had translated.
"Actually, I only found out recently myself. According to the Alien Species, the Nest Card is supposed to function as powerful support, but it was unexpectedly obtained by a human, so its Skills mutated. The system wants to get rid of an anomaly like me as quickly as possible, so it gave me the title of ’Hidden Boss’ to attract the Alien Species to eliminate me."
Zhou Diao nodded upon hearing this. "So it’s not because you’re stronger than me..."
Feng Ling chuckled. "I admit your burst power is impressive, but your stamina is really lacking. Your burst doesn’t last nearly long enough, Deputy Zhou."
Zhou Diao retorted stubbornly, "As long as I run into an Alien Species, that’s all the time I need."
Su Yuqing got up, walked over, and took the tablet from Zhou Diao’s hands, his eyes scanning ten lines at a time.
His brow furrowed deeper and deeper.
"Headquarters has an Inspector who can possess an Alien Species and use their forum functions. Although they don’t monitor the forum 24/7, Headquarters will find out about this sooner or later. The higher-ups will definitely send people to Qingjiang to investigate the Hidden Boss matter."
Su Yuqing sighed. "When that happens, I’ll probably get a written reprimand for failing to report what I knew."
He looked at Feng Ling and said, "For the next few days, don’t go anywhere. I’ll have Zhou Diao and the Special Attack Team members stay here to protect you. We’ll wait for people from Headquarters to arrive, and then we’ll see how to handle your situation."
Zhou Diao crossed his legs, a hint of sarcasm on his face. "How else would they handle it? They’ll definitely recruit her directly, then transfer her to Yanjing or Yunhai City."
Listening to them go back and forth, Feng Ling had a thoroughly exasperated expression on her face.
"I don’t have time to wait for them to ’handle’ me," she stressed again. "I have things to do."
Su Yuqing was too tired to get angry anymore. He tried to reason with her patiently. "What time do you think this is? Can’t you put your other matters aside for now?"
"No." Feng Ling shook her head.
Su Yuqing was frantic. "What could possibly be more important than your own personal safety?!"
Feng Ling pressed her forehead, looking troubled.
’The truth is, she hadn’t wanted to tell them...’
’For one, she was used to handling things her own way. For another, her relationship with these people from the Inspection Bureau wasn’t that close.’
’But the trip to the Maze might not go smoothly, and there was no guarantee she’d find the Divine Statue. Everything was an unknown.’
’Last time, trusting to luck had already made her suffer the consequences. It was better to be more cautious this time...’
"Shit," Zhou Diao muttered, his eyes wide. "Old Su, look at her expression. It’s like she’s about to give her last will and testament."
Feng Ling: "..."
’Well, he wasn’t that far off.’
’If she failed to lower her Pollution Value and couldn’t maintain her sanity, she’d have to count on these people to give her a quick end, lest she cause a catastrophe and be condemned for all time.’
’Sigh, the lifelong inner demon of every East Asian kid—the fear of causing trouble for others.’
Feng Ling cleared her throat and said to them, "I’m going into the Maze."
