Chapter 50: Chapter 48: Brain Injury

With a quick, "To the docks," Feng Ling hurried forward.

Everyone was baffled.

Zhou Diao chased after her. "Hey! Why the sudden trip to the docks? Did you find a clue?"

Feng Ling walked quickly. She didn’t want to waste time stuck in traffic like last night.

"The frog has to rush to the clouds to kiss the White Bird. That means the frog has to be below the White Bird. We’re standing on the bridge deck right now, so the perspective is wrong. No matter how we look, we can’t get that ’longing to kiss’ angle," Feng Ling said rapidly. "We need to find a much lower vantage point."

Zhou Diao was dazed. "...Oh, right. The lowest vantage point around here would be on the river itself."

As realization dawned, he grew excited. He caught up to Feng Ling and said, "You’re amazing, Feng Ling! Your brain really works!"

Having cracked the riddle, Feng Ling felt a little smug herself.

She was in high spirits.

The group arrived at the docks, where passengers for the cross-river ferry were lining up to board.

They boarded the ferry along with the other passengers.

It was an ordinary ferry with only three stops, traveling in a continuous triangular route across the river.

Feng Ling took a full loop but couldn’t find a satisfactory angle.

"What about a sightseeing cruise?" Zhou Diao suggested after studying the route map.

Feng Ling glanced at the time.

A round trip on the ferry was too time-consuming. If they couldn’t get a clue today, they’d have to start all over again tomorrow.

Besides, although the sightseeing cruises had more stops, their routes were even more fixed and wouldn’t suit their search for clues.

’Looks like we’ll have to charter a boat,’ Feng Ling thought, feeling a pang as if her own flesh were being cut.

Zhou Diao scratched the back of his head. "The river patrol has speedboats. Should I go borrow one?"

Feng Ling’s spirits lifted at the suggestion. Her eyes lit up as she looked at Zhou Diao, her tone softening. "Can you really borrow one?"

"...I’ll try," Zhou Diao said, pulling out his phone to make a call. "This counts as an official mission, so we should be able to get logistical support from the river patrol."

Feng Ling thought he would call the patrol team directly, but she was surprised when Zhou Diao started with "Old Su."

"Old Su, here’s the situation..."

Zhou Diao explained the problem they were facing.

An angry roar came from the other end of the line.

"Stop yelling, stop yelling..." Zhou Diao couldn’t help but pick at his ear. "I know I wasn’t supposed to let her go out, but we’re not out here having fun. The sooner we find the Maze, the sooner Feng Ling can lower her Pollution Value. Just contact the river patrol for me, quickly. I’ll wait for your news."

He hung up and didn’t forget to comment on his leader: "Old Su is a great guy in every way, except he’s too old-fashioned and inflexible."

Feng Ling nodded in agreement.

...

Although Su Yuqing always talked about rules and regulations, he was a very reliable person.

Not long after Zhou Diao’s call, he received one from the patrol team. After confirming the number of people and their location, the patrol team sent over a small patrol boat, complete with a driver.

With a patrol boat, finding the right spot on the river became much easier.

Feng Ling had the patrol boat pass under the Qingjiang No.1 Bridge, continue forward, and stop in the middle of the river. Then, looking back at the bridge, she finally saw it: the highest cabin of the ferris wheel overlapping with the top of the bridge’s arch.

The frog in the top hat, rushing to the clouds, longing to kiss the lone White Bird.

"This must be the place," Zhou Diao said, squinting at the distant ferris wheel. "We finally found it."

The feeling of relief lasted for only half a minute.

Feng Ling’s expression gradually cooled, a hint of frustration and annoyance showing on her face.

Because she still hadn’t found "Snake Month" and "Heavenly Fire."

Huangfu Miaomiao cautiously watched Feng Ling’s expression. "Maybe... we could try... try again tonight?"

Feng Ling nodded. "Mm."

Everyone had spent too much time on the river and felt like they were about to get sunburnt to a crisp. They were all eager to get back to shore and rest.

When Feng Ling nodded, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

They found a place to eat near the Qingjiang Bridge, resting until the sun set and the moon rose before setting out to search for clues again.

The patrol team was very cooperative, taking Feng Ling’s group back and forth on the river several times.

Unfortunately, there was no progress.

The evening breeze rustled, and the river waves lapped.

The city’s brilliant lights reflected on the river’s surface, like a dazzling rainbow blooming in a pool of thick ink.

Such a beautiful sight couldn’t soothe the anxiety in Feng Ling’s heart.

She stood on the patrol boat, silent.

The wind, carrying moisture, hit her face, chilling her through her sweat-dampened cotton shirt, a coldness seeping into her skin.

Looking up, the moon seemed about to disappear behind the clouds.

’Where in the world is the Maze?’

No one on the patrol boat spoke.

Zhou Diao shot a look at Huangfu Miaomiao.

Huangfu Miaomiao shrank back, lowered her head, and pulled up the hood of her sweatshirt, pretending she hadn’t seen him.

Zhou Diao then looked at the three members of the Special Attack Team, only to have each of them look back at him pleadingly.

Zhou Diao: "..."

’Fine.’

’Someone has to bite the bullet.’

"Ahem, well..." Zhou Diao said to Feng Ling. "How about we call it a night? A special place like the Maze is bound to be hard to find, that’s normal. We should be mentally prepared for a long fight. Let’s head back?"

"Yeah, let’s go back," Feng Ling said.

Her voice was dejected.

Zhou Diao wasn’t in a great mood either. He let out a low sigh and went to the front to ask the boat driver to head to shore.

Feng Ling picked up her phone and took a picture of the Qingjiang Bridge, wanting to continue studying it when she got back.

The Daoist sent her another message.

[Li Daoist: Are you okay?]

’Is he worried I’m dead?’ Feng Ling thought.

She sulkily replied with two words.

[Aisha: Not good.]

[Li Daoist: What’s wrong? Are you hurt?]

[Aisha: Something like that.]

[Li Daoist: Where are you hurt? Is it serious?]

[Aisha: My brain’s hurt. I’ve nearly guessed myself stupid.]

The other end of the chat was silent for a long time.

’He’s probably speechless.’

But Feng Ling didn’t care. She desperately needed an outlet and unleashed a torrent of messages into the chat box.

[Aisha: I’ve wracked my brain and still can’t figure out what the Heavenly Fire of the Snake Month means.]

[Aisha: I thought Snake Month was the moon’s reflection in the water, so I spent all night getting blasted by the wind on the river, but all I saw was the light show.]

[Aisha: Then I thought Heavenly Fire was a Meteor at night, but of course tonight is overcast, and even the moon keeps disappearing!]

[Aisha: I feel like cutting open my own head just to see what’s inside!]

[Aisha: Daoist, didn’t you say the Alien Species would come for me? Why haven’t they shown up yet?]

[Aisha: Daoist, my head is killing me right now.]

[Li Daoist: What’s your Pollution Value at?]

Feng Ling, in the middle of her rant, froze when she saw that message. Her furiously typing fingers stopped.

Her frenzy suddenly vanished.

She almost wanted to laugh.

’This guy really is something else. His knowledge of Alien Species seems to surpass even the Inspection Bureau’s.’

[Aisha: Daoist, I don’t understand. What’s a Pollution Value?]

Another long silence.

At last, Li Daoist sent another message.

[Li Daoist: Snake Month might not refer to the moon. In Taoism, the Twelve Yuanchen preside over the twelve months. The Taiyin Yuanchen protects the Si Month, which is also known as the Snake Month.]
