Chapter 51: Chapter 49: Enemy Attack

Feng Ling stared blankly at the message from Li Daoist, her heart a raging tempest.

It was a chaotic mix of surging ecstasy and exasperated rage!

The last line of the riddle was just too obscure!

If you didn’t know anything about Taoism, who would have ever guessed that Snake Month meant Si Month!

...Oh, right. When is Si Month?

『Aisha: Daoist, when is Si Month?』

『Li Daoist: The fourth month of the lunar calendar. It has already passed. We are now in the fifth lunar month, the Horse Month, under the protection of the Sheng Guang Yuan Chen.』

Feng Ling’s heart sank.

’It’s already passed? The Horse Month?’

’Can I still find the Maze, then?’

Feng Ling decided not to beat around the bush. Clinging to her last sliver of hope, she furiously typed a message to the Daoist.

『Aisha: "The Heavenly Fire of Snake Month burns a door from the ashes." Do you know what this sentence means?』

『Li Daoist: Snake Month refers to the previous month. The Heavenly Fire should be the fiery clouds you see at sunrise or sunset. At sunrise, these clouds grow brighter. At sunset, they grow darker, eventually turning a blackish-gray, which aligns with the imagery of ashes. Therefore, the sentence means you must look for a door in the direction of the sunset, at sundown, during the previous month.』

『Li Daoist: However, "the direction of the sunset" is too large an area, and too vague. I believe there must be another part to the riddle. Otherwise, with only the clues in this one sentence, it would be very difficult to find the precise location.』

『Aisha: (ToT) There is another part to the riddle, and I’ve already solved it. But I didn’t realize it wasn’t Snake Month anymore! What should I do?』

『Li Daoist: Compared to now, sunset during Snake Month was about 20 minutes earlier.』

『Aisha: Will the sunset’s position have shifted?』

『Li Daoist: It will, but Snake Month and Horse Month are adjacent, so the shift won’t be too significant. It shouldn’t affect your riddle-solving. The sunset’s position would only be noticeably different over a large time span, like between summer and winter.』

Feng Ling breathed a sigh of relief. It felt like her entire day’s work hadn’t been for nothing.

『Li Daoist: Are you looking for the Maze?』

Feng Ling ignored the question completely. All she wanted was to coax and trick him into meeting her in person.

『Aisha: Daoist, let me treat you to a meal.』

『Li Daoist: There’s no need. I’m fasting.』

『Aisha: How about I treat you to a movie?』

『Li Daoist: No thank you. I am in meditative practice.』

『Aisha: Then let me donate some money for incense at the Three Pure Ones Palace. Daoist, I really want to thank you in person!』

『Li Daoist: There’s no need. The help I could offer was limited and not worthy of your thanks. I hope you can find a safe place to live, learn to protect yourself, and always remain vigilant. Do not blindly trust clues from others to enter the Maze. The Maze is not a place for humans.』

’This guy is so stubborn,’ Feng Ling thought. ’What’s his deal, refusing to meet me no matter what?’

Just then, another message arrived.

『Li Daoist: If you ever feel like you’re on the verge of losing control, you can try meditating. Placing some of your favorite aromatherapy incense in the room and playing soothing music can help regulate your emotions.』

After sending this, he also sent a red envelope worth 50 yuan.

The note on it read: "For incense."

『Aisha: Thank you, Daoist. You really know a lot.』

『Aisha: Daoist, can I learn from you? If I go to the Three Pure Ones Palace, will I be able to see you?』

She still hadn’t given up.

But after sending the red envelope, the Daoist went silent.

It wasn’t the first time. This Li Daoist often vanished mid-conversation. Feng Ling wasn’t angry. ’He can run, but he can’t hide,’ she thought. She would find him.

She looked up at the night sky with a grin, suddenly realizing how beautiful the river view was at this hour.

The patrol boat docked—

Feng Ling arranged to use the boat again at 6 o’clock the next day, then headed home in high spirits.

Zhou Diao and Huangfu Miaomiao were both baffled by her change in mood.

...

After getting home, she had a huge meal, as usual.

Of the two nests she had built, the one for the unknown bird species was like a water balloon filled to the brim, unable to hold another drop of energy. The spider’s nest was also nearly full.

’Once I find the Maze entrance, I’ll deal with these two nests,’ Feng Ling planned. ’Carrying them on me every day is becoming a burden.’

...

The next day was bright and sunny.

For once, Feng Ling spent the entire day cooped up at home, not heading out to the docks until evening.

As the weather moved into high summer, the sunset was gradually pushed later. It wasn’t until almost 7 o’clock that the sun began its unhurried descent.

Feng Ling boarded the patrol boat once more. A gust of wind, WHOOSH, blew across the river, freeing the strands of hair stuck to her sweaty cheeks.

She was in an excellent mood and took the initiative to send the Daoist a message.

『Aisha: Daoist, the sun is about to set.』

In the distance, the setting sun dyed the entire river a dazzling crimson-gold. The mountains, painted by the afterglow, lost their original colors.

Feng Ling’s eyes were fixed on that brilliant red "Heavenly Fire," her heart soaring.

Zhou Diao and Huangfu Miaomiao were also captivated by the sunset.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting for the moment the sun disappeared, to see just where the afterglow would "burn to ashes."

Suddenly, amidst the magnificent sunset, Feng Ling saw a conspicuous glint of light. It reflected the last rays of sunlight like a piece of gold, lasting for only a brief half-minute before rapidly dimming.

Feng Ling squinted, trying hard to identify the source of that glint, when she suddenly heard a splash.

The next instant, something pierced through her chest from behind!

"Enemy attack!!!" Qin Liang yelled.

Gunshots echoed across the river, kicking up splashes of water!

Feng Ling stared in disbelief at the hole in her chest. It all happened so fast she didn’t even see what had attacked her. By the time she came to her senses, blood was gushing out like a waterfall.

Huangfu Miaomiao stared blankly at the bleeding wound, her face deathly pale.

From the boat, Zhou Diao cursed in frustration, "It’s an Alien Species! The Alien Species are in the water!"

His ability was completely useless underwater!

"Get to the shore, now!" Zhou Diao roared. He turned to look at Feng Ling and asked anxiously, "Hey! Can you hang in there?!"

Feng Ling’s hands went limp. Her phone slipped from her grasp, landing with a CLATTER.

Her mind seemed to disconnect. ’Why now, of all times...’ she thought, dazed.

"They’re coming after us!" shouted Cao Hongyi, raising his gun and firing rapidly into the wake behind the patrol boat!

The waves churned as unknown creatures gave chase at high speed beneath the surface.

The sun had now set, and the dark river water became their perfect hiding place.

Feng Ling looked toward the spot that had been glowing moments before. It had already faded to nothing, blending indistinguishably into the clouds.

’So close...’

She was so, so close to finding the entrance to the Maze.

"Go faster!" Zhou Diao bellowed. "If they dare set foot on shore, I’ll tear them to shreds!!!"

The patrol boat suddenly lurched violently!

Something had slammed into its side!

The hull tilted severely. Everyone scrambled to grab the metal railings, but Feng Ling, having lost her balance, tumbled backward and plunged into the water—
