Chapter 52: Chapter 50: Fishman
"Feng Ling!!!"
Zhou Diao lunged forward, reaching out to grab her, but grasped only empty air.
A dark red bloom of blood surged to the river’s surface, then was quickly washed away by the waves, leaving no trace. By the time the patrol boat stabilized, they could no longer spot Feng Ling’s location.
The three team members held their fire, warily scanning their surroundings, worried that a stray bullet might hit Feng Ling underwater.
Zhou Diao paced frantically on the patrol boat, peering back and forth. He couldn’t see anything but the churning waves!
Furious, he grabbed Huangfu Miaomiao beside him and roared, "What were you doing?! An Alien Species shows up, and you don’t say a word to warn us?!"
Huangfu Miaomiao was stunned with fear. Only now did she react, tears streaming down her face. "I-I don’t know... They were in the water. I can’t see them..."
Zhou Diao shoved her hard and pulled out his phone. "We’re under attack west of the Qingjiang No.1 Bridge! The enemy is submerged. We need backup!"
"Movement in the water!" Qin Liang suddenly shouted.
"Don’t shoot!" Xiao Li cried out in panic. "It’s Feng Ling!"
A familiar figure surfaced amidst the dark waves. But before they could get a clear look to see if it was Feng Ling, a sharp, black spike shot up and impaled it!
Zhou Diao’s heart leaped into his throat. He was sure Feng Ling was dead. But as the splash settled, he saw it was only her clothes that had been impaled.
’Then where was Feng Ling?’
Zhou Diao’s heart hammered in his chest. He wished he could just jump into the water and fight those bastards himself!
’But what good would that do?’
Being able to swim and being able to fight underwater were two completely different things. His Beast Claw was covered in thick fur; underwater, it would only be a hindrance.
’Besides...’
Zhou Diao’s jaw tightened as he stared at the dark surface of the water.
’Besides, Feng Ling was probably already dead.’
’If he couldn’t save her, he shouldn’t make a pointless sacrifice. The priority now was to get back to shore, evacuate any nearby boats and civilians, and regain the tactical advantage.’
As an Inspector, ensuring civilian safety was always the primary objective of any operation.
"Head for the shore," Zhou Diao commanded. "We’ll wait for backup, regroup, and then clear out the Alien Species along the riverbank!"
Huangfu Miaomiao was on the boat, crying her eyes out.
Zhou Diao stared at her coldly. "What are you crying for? It’s not like one of your own people died."
Huangfu Miaomiao sobbed, "...I don’t know."
’To be honest, Feng Ling wasn’t even nice to her. She was always ordering her around, didn’t trust her, and even enjoyed startling her out of the blue.’
’But now that Feng Ling was dead, for some reason, her heart ached...’
......
...
In the icy river water, Feng Ling could feel her body sinking slowly.
The churning mud and sand, mixed with the blood pouring from her body, had obscured the Alien Species’ vision, buying her a chance to survive.
Her body was already working to repair itself.
But the weight of the surrounding water pressed down on her chest, the feeling of suffocation closing in like the Death God himself.
’Feng Ling recalled the posts on the player forums. She was absolutely certain these Alien Species had come specifically for her.’
’To counter the Nest’s regenerative ability, they had deliberately attacked her on the water. Even if her body healed, she would just drown over and over.’
’Right now, she should be swimming to the surface as fast as she could to gasp for air.’
’But as Feng Ling watched the Alien Species darting about, she thought that maybe, just maybe, she could wait a little longer... just a little longer...’
’One...’
’Two...’
’Three...’
Feng Ling counted silently.
To her, the dark riverbed was as bright as day. Aside from the churning silt occasionally obscuring her view, she could see everything with perfect clarity.
Her attackers were three monsters that resembled Fishmen.
Their faces retained a human-like appearance, but gills grew where their cheeks met their necks. Where their arms should have been, there were two long, sharp barbs.
It was these barbs that had pierced her body moments ago.
To be precise, they weren’t barbs, but a kind of spine-like pectoral fin.
The pectoral fins could spread like sails to propel them through the water or contract into sharp spines for an attack.
Beyond that, their powerful fishtails could also be dangerous.
Now that Feng Ling had a clear understanding of their anatomy, she felt much calmer.
She continued to wait.
’She was also curious. Here in the gloomy depths, who was more afraid? Her, facing three monsters? Or them, facing a Boss whose location was unknown?’
The Alien Species were on edge. Having lost their target, they darted about like headless flies. After a circular search, they decided to widen their perimeter, unwilling to let the hidden Boss they’d had in their grasp get away.
Feng Ling patiently waited for one to draw near.
Her body, now completely transparent, drew no attention. As one of the Alien Species brushed past her, the Bone Blade, hidden by her Stealth, suddenly struck!
The Bone Blade sliced open the Fishman’s neck!
She pounced. The moment it was immobilized, she grabbed the Fishman’s head, planted her feet on its back, and kicked off, launching herself out of the water!
Fresh air flooded her lungs. There was no time to savor it. The next second, she plunged back into the bloody water clouding from the corpse and saw the other two Fishmen speeding toward her!
Underwater, Feng Ling’s speed was no match for the Fishmen.
Four spines shot toward her. She couldn’t dodge, nor did she try to. Instead, she met the attack head-on, her reinforced Bone Blade blocking them directly! Then, using the current, she tilted her body and pushed them aside, causing the spines to hit nothing but water.
The Fishmen thrashed their tails, trying to reorient for another strike!
Seizing the opportunity, Feng Ling’s four Teeth and Claws shot out, clamping down on their shoulders!
CRUNCH—
The Teeth and Claws snapped the long spines off at the base. Like dragonflies with their wings torn off, the Fishmen were left with only their long bodies, struggling desperately.
Feng Ling kept her Teeth and Claws clamped firmly in their wounds, coldly watching their gills heave and their tails thrash in a frenzy.
The already murky river water grew even darker. The creatures writhed in agony, trying to shake Feng Ling off. They swam erratically, their balance completely shot.
But Feng Ling didn’t let go.
’Why would she let go of her hard-won trophies unless she ran out of air?’
She still had two Bone Blades.
She extended a scythe bone blade and sliced off one of the Fishman’s gills. She watched as silt poured into its mouth, its face twisting into a grotesque mask of pain.
Then she sliced off its pelvic fin.
Next, the tail fin.
It gradually lost the ability to swim.
She began to scrape its scales, layer by layer, until she had scraped down to the white, pulpy flesh beneath.
The river was stained completely crimson. As far as she could see, everything was a dark, bloody red!
The other Fishman was nearly driven insane with terror by Feng Ling!
It opened its mouth wide, trying to scream, but the sound was lost to the water. Feng Ling couldn’t hear a thing.
Nevertheless, she very helpfully released her Teeth and Claws.
She was worried the Alien Species might be screaming "log out," and that would be no fun at all.
The instant her Teeth and Claws released their grip, the Fishman fled like a madman.
Feng Ling turned her attention to the other Fishman she still held.
It was mangled and barely alive, clamped by two of her Teeth and Claws at the shoulders, its body drifting limply in the undercurrent.
Feng Ling considered it for a moment. Then, as if in an act of great mercy, she gently released her Teeth and Claws and let the Fishman go.
