Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 66 - 64: Exceptionally TalentedChapter 66: Chapter 64: Exceptionally Talented
Su Yuqing had an excellent memory. He quickly recalled that Fang Ye was the man his team had rescued from a pit during their last operation in Jiangkou City.
Fang Ye had served a year in prison for theft. After his release, he couldn’t find a job and reconnected with his old unsavory friends. At their urging, he and a few others had gathered tools and snuck into a parking garage late at night to steal.
As it turned out, they had the misfortune of falling into a deep pit dug by Alien Species.
In reality, the garage’s owner had already been taken over by an Alien Species. Guided by a regional mission, the Alien Species had teamed up and gone underground to eliminate a Pollution Body.
Su Yuqing guessed that the Pollution Body had killed all of those Alien Species. By some bizarre twist of fate, Fang Ye and his accomplices had been used by the Pollution Body, and the fact they managed to survive was quite lucky.
Su Yuqing was a busy man and didn’t meet with just anyone, but Fang Ye’s visit piqued his interest. "Have him go to the third-floor conference room first," he replied. "I’ll be right there."
"Understood."
...
Su Yuqing and his assistant met with Fang Ye in the conference room.
Fang Ye stood up awkwardly, his face flushed with barely suppressed excitement. He was practically beaming.
"Captain Su!" he exclaimed, shaking Su Yuqing’s hand.
Su Yuqing smiled. "What can I do for you?"
Fang Ye gave an embarrassed smile. "I’d like to join the Inspection Bureau," he said. "I was wondering if that’s possible."
"Join the Inspection Bureau?" Su Yuqing paused. "You mean you want to work for me?"
"That’s right..." Fang Ye nodded shyly, looking down. "I think... uh... I came across a Card by accident yesterday, and it seems I’ve gained some kind of ability. So I was thinking, maybe I could become an Inspector..."
’Yesterday?’
Su Yuqing thought about last night’s operation.
The timing was quite a coincidence, and the part about "coming across it by accident" was rather intriguing.
Still, as long as it meant strengthening the ranks of the Inspectors, Su Yuqing was open to the idea.
He had Fang Ye sit down and began to explain. "I’m not directly in charge of Inspector recruitment at the moment, but I can help you submit an application. You’ll need to fill out some basic information, and then I’ll take you for an ability test. The results, along with your file, will be sent to the Supervision Bureau’s Human Resources department. They’ll then assign you a specific role based on a comprehensive evaluation of your personality, strengths, and thought processes."
Su Yuqing’s explanation left Fang Ye a bit stunned and disappointed.
’He had assumed that as soon as he revealed he possessed an Extraordinary Power, the Inspection Bureau would recruit him on the spot. Why was there so much red tape?’
Seeing the confusion on Fang Ye’s face, Su Yuqing added with a smile, "Of course, the Inspection Bureau does have an internal referral process. But even if I were to sponsor you, it would only let you skip the ability test. You’d still have to go through the other steps."
"Oh, I see..." Fang Ye smiled sheepishly. "I shouldn’t trouble you, Captain Su. Let’s just follow the standard procedure. So... should I go take the test now?"
"That works." Su Yuqing turned to his assistant. "Take him to the testing grounds."
The assistant stood and gave Fang Ye a slight bow. "Please, follow me."
Fang Ye glanced at Su Yuqing uncertainly.
"Go on," Su Yuqing said with a smile. "I’ll be in the observation room. The results require my signature."
Fang Ye followed the assistant out.
Su Yuqing watched Fang Ye’s departing figure, a pensive look on his face. Then, he also left the conference room and headed for the observation room overlooking the testing grounds.
The entrance test for new Inspectors primarily focused on two areas: the applicant’s Card potential and their psychological fortitude.
Other aspects like physical fitness, weapons knowledge, and combat skill were considered bonus points but carried little weight. This was because a Card Holder’s physical condition improved dramatically, and such skills could be honed through later training.
Only Card potential and psychological fortitude were different—one was a matter of luck, the other, a matter of innate talent.
Fang Ye’s test results were mediocre, placing him in the lower-middle tier.
He looked crestfallen when he returned to the conference room. Upon seeing Su Yuqing, he managed a sheepish laugh. "I think I was a little nervous... I didn’t do my best."
Su Yuqing nodded with a comforting smile. "Being nervous is a good thing. Inspectors face tense situations all the time on missions. You need to get used to that feeling."
Fang Ye nodded numbly. "...You’re right, Captain Su."
He hesitated for a moment, then couldn’t stop himself from asking, "So... with results like mine, what kind of position could I even get?"
"Your Card is a Fishman, so you’d likely be assigned to a coastal city. But as for going on official missions..." Su Yuqing glanced at the test results. "You’ll need a period of training and study first."
Fang Ye’s expression fell. "If I fail the training, does that mean I can’t become a full-fledged Inspector?"
Su Yuqing thought for a moment, then looked Fang Ye in the eye and said earnestly, "I’ve always believed that you reap what you sow. Your hard work won’t be for nothing. Besides, an Inspector’s duties are multi-faceted. We have combat types, coordination types like myself, and those who specialize in investigation or rescue."
Fang Ye lowered his head, thinking to himself, ’That may be true, but the only ones who get called heroes are the combat-type Inspectors... Right now, who in all of Qingjiang City doesn’t know Deputy Zhou? And Ye Zheng before him was even more famous, an idol to so many. But how many people have ever heard of Su Yuqing?’
’The rank of Captain might seem higher than Deputy Captain, but it’s the Deputy Captain who’s the real star of the show.’
Su Yuqing said, "I’ll send your file and test results to the HR department. You should hear back in three to five days. Please leave your contact information."
Fang Ye agonized for a moment before looking up apologetically. "Captain Su, I... I’d like to think about it a bit more, if that’s all right."
Su Yuqing nodded. "Of course. Come find me anytime when you’ve made up your mind."
He handed the test results to Fang Ye.
Fang Ye took the papers. "Okay, then I’ll... I won’t take up any more of your time, Captain Su. Thank you."
The assistant saw Fang Ye out.
A short while later, the assistant returned to the conference room and let out a pointed sigh.
Su Yuqing couldn’t help but chuckle. "What is it?"
"Nothing, it’s just... it makes you think," the assistant said with another sigh. "It’s only when you have a point of comparison that you realize how truly gifted that one in the hospital bed is."
Su Yuqing laughed out loud.
He clapped the assistant on the shoulder. "Come on," he said, smiling. "This is a good chance to go see how she’s recovering."
...
...
The ward on the eleventh floor was quite lively.
When Su Yuqing entered, Feng Ling was on her phone, Huangfu Miaomiao was eating snacks, and a group of nurses were chatting and laughing as they gave the Cat Spider and Cat Owl a checkup.
The room was filled with greeting cards, gift boxes, and large bouquets of flowers.
’Feng Ling’s identity hasn’t even been made public,’ Su Yuqing mused. ’Who would be sending get-well-soon flowers? It must be the hospital staff.’
Su Yuqing had to suppress a laugh. ’At this rate,’ he thought, ’Feng Ling’s popularity here is going to surpass that of the medical wing’s former number one idol, Ye Zheng.’
He walked up to the hospital bed and said to Feng Ling, "I have some good news and some bad news. Which do you want to hear first?"
