Chapter 67: Chapter 65: Worship
"The bad news," Feng Ling said without hesitation.
Su Yuqing was slightly taken aback. "...I thought, with your personality, you’d choose the good news first."
Feng Ling said, "Then let’s start with the good news."
She didn’t care either way.
Su Yuqing looked a bit resigned. "The good news is that we’ve finished tallying the Alien Species from last night. Not counting the Pollution Body killed by the rocket launcher, you killed a total of eleven Alien Species. I went ahead and applied for your bonus while writing the report. It should be in your account in the next day or two."
Feng Ling was absolutely delighted to hear this.
"So what’s the bad news?" she asked.
Su Yuqing smiled again. "The bad news is, the bonus for killing an Alien Species has been lowered to 800,000. It’s not 1,000,000 anymore."
"Why was it lowered?" Feng Ling was shocked. ’This is devastating news!’
Su Yuqing explained, "In the past, killing Alien Species was much more difficult, and humans who could fight them were extremely rare. That’s why the bonuses were set so high. But as more and more humans possess Cards, the relative difficulty of killing Alien Species has decreased, and the bonuses have been gradually reduced. You could think of it as... inflation, in a sense?"
Feng Ling was speechless. After a moment, she said, "No wonder you wanted me to hear the good news first."
Su Yuqing simply smiled without saying a word.
"So, you’re saying the bonus will just keep getting lower and lower?" Feng Ling asked.
"It will decrease, but not by too much. And for Alien Species that pose a major threat to society, it will even increase." Su Yuqing asked her, amused, "Are you that short on cash? I remember you just received a one-million bonus. Did you spend it all already?"
"You can never have too much," Feng Ling replied.
"Don’t worry, you won’t be shorted a single cent of the bonus you’ve earned," Su Yuqing said, glancing at her injuries. "How’s your recovery coming along?"
Feng Ling sighed, "Almost completely healed, but my shoulder still hurts a lot."
She tried to move it, slowly pulling a segment of Bone Blade from the back of her shoulder, followed by a segment of Teeth and Claws, and then another.
"There are only three left now." Feng Ling sighed again. "I don’t know when the three I cut off will grow back."
"You basically cut off a part of your own body. It’s definitely not going to recover that quickly," Su Yuqing said.
He was also quite impressed by Feng Ling’s decisiveness. Most people, in such a critical situation, wouldn’t necessarily have the heart to sever their own arm.
Then, he suddenly realized something and looked at Huangfu Miaomiao, who was next to the hospital bed.
In his memory, Huangfu Miaomiao was missing half an arm, but now both her hands were perfectly intact, holding a bag of potato chips.
"How did this heal?" Su Yuqing asked in surprise.
Huangfu Miaomiao grinned foolishly, her two dangling legs swinging back and forth as she sat in the chair.
"I had her absorb a Card," Feng Ling said, turning her head to Huangfu Miaomiao. "You tell Captain Su."
Huangfu Miaomiao said with a beaming smile, "Blood Worms! They have two properties, decomposition and aggregation. They can break the body down into tiny blood worms, and they can also have the blood worms aggregate to repair any damage to the body. After my Demon Card absorbed the Blood Worm, my arm was all fixed up~"
’And I won’t be afraid of losing a hand or a foot in the future, either!’
"What about your Pollution Value?" Su Yuqing asked. "How much did it go up?"
Huangfu Miaomiao: "Hehe, 2%~"
’No wonder she’s so happy.’
Su Yuqing gave a resigned smile, looked at Feng Ling, and cautioned them, "You still need to be more careful next time."
’Huangfu Miaomiao’s position is a delicate one. If her Pollution Value gets too high, there’s no guarantee Headquarters won’t have an opinion. Still, I’m sure Feng Ling is well aware of that.’
"By the way, Fang Ye came looking for me earlier. He absorbed a Card and wants to join the Inspection Bureau," Su Yuqing said to Feng Ling.
Feng Ling blinked. "Who’s Fang Ye?"
’She never bothered to remember unimportant people.’
"If you don’t remember, then never mind..." Su Yuqing scanned the hospital room, preparing to head back to his office. "Get some good rest. Let me know when you’re being discharged, and I’ll arrange for a driver to take you back to your apartment."
"Captain Su, don’t go yet!"
Feng Ling hurriedly called out to stop him, sitting up in her hospital bed. She said with utmost sincerity, "Captain Su, can you help me contact the river patrol team? I was so close to finding the Maze yesterday."
Su Yuqing stopped and turned to look at her. "You’re this injured, and you still insist on entering the Maze?"
Feng Ling found the look in Su Yuqing’s eyes odd, and what he said was strange too.
’Of course I have to enter the Maze. What else would I do?’
"I’m at 29%," Feng Ling said.
Su Yuqing: "..."
’I shouldn’t have even asked.’
"Just let me know in advance when you need the boat. I’ll arrange it," Su Yuqing replied, then turned and left the hospital room.
His assistant followed behind him.
As they entered the elevator one after the other, Su Yuqing couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of familiarity.
He thought for a moment before realizing that it was at this time last week that he had first met Feng Ling in that same hospital room.
The young woman who had nearly lost her life at the hands of an Alien Species seven days ago, now, seven days later, had the means and the courage to enter the Maze.
"Her growth is too fast..." Moved by this thought, Su Yuqing unconsciously spoke his mind aloud.
His assistant, standing beside him, felt the same way. "Indeed. It’s so fast, it’s like she was born to fight Alien Species."
Su Yuqing glanced at his assistant.
The assistant said, "If Feng Ling had administered Fang Ye’s test today, the outcome would have been completely different."
Su Yuqing nodded slightly. "Feng Ling’s combat awareness... is indeed stronger than an ordinary person’s."
Often, the gap isn’t in physical ability, but in awareness.
It’s like when a soccer ball suddenly comes flying at you. Some people will dodge, some will kick it back, some will be scared and shut their eyes, and others will just stand there, not knowing what to do.
In a real battle, many things happen in the blink of an eye. The reaction a combatant has in that instant is crucial to the outcome of the fight.
The assistant continued, "I looked into her personal file. She grew up in an orphanage. In middle school, she showed a talent for sports and was recruited into a special program by her PE teacher. Later, she was admitted to a sports university to study freestyle combat. She competed in several matches and even placed. If things had gone smoothly, she likely would have become a professional fighter. But for some reason, she suddenly took a leave of absence during the second semester of her sophomore year and came to Qingjiang City to work as a cleaner at a nursing home. She did that for three straight years. Then, again for reasons unknown, she abruptly quit and was unemployed for a while. Her most recent job was as a sparring partner at a fighting club, but she’s already been fired for missing a week of work."
After listening, Su Yuqing smiled, glanced at his assistant, and teased, "Even though I was the one who told you to look her up, I didn’t expect you to be so thorough. Don’t tell me you’ve started to admire Feng Ling too, just like the doctors and nurses upstairs?"
The assistant smiled as well, admitting frankly, "I do admire her."
That’s why he was so meticulous when looking up her information.
