Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 69 - 67: Contribution Value SystemChapter 69: Chapter 67: Contribution Value System
Feng Ling stared at the rejection notice, falling into a long silence.
The river wind brushed against her face as the last of the sunset faded.
Refusing to give up, she tried calling the number, but the call wouldn’t connect.
She then opened the Alien Star forum and sent a private message to "Green Weasel 01," only to see a notification: She had been blacklisted by the user. Message failed to send!
Feng Ling was seething with uncontrollable rage. She whipped her head around and snapped at Huangfu Miaomiao, who was about to put on some perfume, "Stop spraying that!"
Huangfu Miaomiao flinched, quietly putting away the perfume she had just taken out.
With a dark expression, Feng Ling stared at her phone, her emotions in absolute turmoil.
She couldn’t understand. ’Why did Li Qing delete me? When did he do it? Did he realize something? Was it really necessary to blacklist me on the forum, too?’
"Why did you delete me..." Feng Ling murmured, taking a deep breath to try and calm herself.
The speedboat today had been arranged separately by Su Yuqing, and the man driving it didn’t know her. Hearing her, he chimed in, "Hah! There’s no ’why’ to it. He just fell out of love."
Feng Ling was taken aback.
The man continued, "Just forget him. Once a man’s made up his mind, there’s no changing it!"
Feng Ling knew the driver had misunderstood, but she couldn’t be bothered to explain. A cold smile touched her lips as she asked, "And what if I insist on getting him back?"
The driver turned to look back at her, his tone earnest. "Miss, a melon plucked by force is never sweet."
The smile on Feng Ling’s lips took on a vicious edge.
"I don’t care if it’s sweet or not. I’m just here to do the plucking."
...
The puzzle event on the river was officially over.
Feng Ling went home in a foul mood and began preparing for her trip to the Maze.
As luck would have it...
The riddle pointed to Sanqing Mountain, and that Li Daoist who had deleted her was also on Sanqing Mountain.
Originally, she had only been curious about him. He either possessed a special Card or had some sort of connection to an Alien Species; otherwise, he wouldn’t have such an encyclopedic knowledge of them. Feng Ling had genuinely wanted to meet him and pick his brain.
But the fact that he had deleted her had well and truly infuriated her!
She made a decision. Before entering the Maze, she had to find this man. She would meet him face-to-face and have a nice, long chat.
’Why did you delete me?’
’If you have nothing to hide, why would you delete me?!’
’And you even blocked me!’
If he couldn’t give her a satisfactory answer, she’d probably have to beat the hell out of him just to feel better.
—To prevent emotional escalation leading to a loss of rational control, appropriate venting would likely be beneficial for her.
That night, Feng Ling used a rental app to book an RV and tickets for the Sanqing Mountain scenic area.
Early the next morning, the RV was delivered to her apartment building.
Feng Ling put her two little pets into their respective carriers, loaded them into the RV along with her own suitcase, and with Huangfu Miaomiao in tow, set off immediately for Sanqing Mountain.
Before they even got on the highway, she received a call from Su Yuqing telling her to come to the Inspection Bureau as soon as possible.
Ever since discovering she’d been deleted, Feng Ling, whose Pollution Value was at 29%, had been emotionally unstable.
Having her trip interrupted by a phone call did nothing to improve her mood, and her first instinct was to refuse.
Su Yuqing laughed on the other end. "Your bonus has been deposited. There are a few other gifts, too. Are you sure you don’t want them?"
Feng Ling’s mood instantly brightened.
"I’ll be there in fifteen minutes," she replied.
...
Fifteen minutes later, Feng Ling was in Su Yuqing’s office, staring in confusion at the strangely shaped phone on the desk.
"This is... the gift you were talking about?" Feng Ling picked up the phone, testing its weight in her hand.
Its size and weight were almost on par with one of those old-school brick phones!
Su Yuqing smiled. "Remember that Contribution Point system I told you about? Well, it’s officially being implemented starting today. The official name from above is the Hunter Alliance project, but I think ’Bounty Hunters’ is a more fitting description."
He took the phone, opened a hidden slot on the side, and held his hand out to Feng Ling. "Take out your SIM card. Once you install it in this new phone, you can use it like a normal one. It has all the functions a phone should have, and some that a normal phone doesn’t."
Frowning, Feng Ling took out her phone, removed the SIM card, and handed it to him. "What kind of features are we talking about?"
Su Yuqing installed the SIM card and began demonstrating as he spoke:
"We’ve modeled it after the Alien Star forum, building an internal version that only Inspectors and Hunters can access. All communication is protected by a top-level security firewall, so there will be absolutely no information leaks... Also, you can check your Contribution Value ranking and your Contribution Point usage here."
Feng Ling’s eyes widened slightly.
The interface Su Yuqing showed her displayed that she had 16 Contribution Points, and listed among the items she could redeem them for was, to her astonishment, a rocket launcher!
Unbelievable.
No wonder Su Yuqing had sounded so confident on the phone; he must have known she’d be interested in this stuff!
Feng Ling took a deep breath, incredibly tempted.
Her injuries hadn’t fully healed, and she knew nothing about the situation inside the Maze. These weapons were exactly what she needed; she absolutely loved this!
"While I agree you could really use it, given your lack of any practical experience, I’d suggest you choose other, more manageable weapons," Su Yuqing reminded her tactfully, still smiling.
Feng Ling slowly calmed down.
Su Yuqing had a point. She was an amateur, after all; she didn’t even know how to load ammunition. It was probably best not to jump into something so intense right away.
"Frankly, if we had more time, I could arrange a weapons training program for you. But your Pollution Value is already at 29%, so I don’t think you can afford any more delays," Su Yuqing said. "This phone also has another important function: it can store Cards. See this small piece of red glass at the top? When you activate the storage function, just point the glass at a Card. It can hold up to two at a time."
It suddenly clicked for Feng Ling.
’No wonder the phone is so thick. So it can store Cards.’
Seeing that she more or less understood, Su Yuqing continued, "There’s one more feature you need to know about, but I hope you’ll never have to use it."
He flipped the phone over. In the bottom right corner was an inconspicuous bump. He pressed it gently, and a miniature, drawer-like compartment popped out.
Inside the "drawer" was a single blue pill.
"If you ever feel your Pollution Value spiraling out of control, I hope you’ll be able to take this pill before you completely lose your sanity," Su Yuqing said. "It will help you find release."
Feng Ling was stunned. Staring at the little pill, she asked, "So for Pollution Value... you guys just let civilian Hunters rely entirely on their own conscience?"
"It’s the nation’s trust in you," Su Yuqing sighed softly. "The Hunter Alliance project is currently in its trial phase. Fewer than one hundred of these phones have been distributed nationwide. If any... undesirable incidents occur during this period, the whole project could be scrapped. Then we’d have no choice but to pull people from our already-stretched inspection teams to deal with civilian Hunters whose Pollution Value has spun out of control."
Su Yuqing sighed again, looking at Feng Ling. "That’s a scenario I’m sure you don’t want to see."
