Chapter 70: Chapter 68: Children’s Day
Feng Ling couldn’t resist. "Captain Su, don’t you think you’re singling me out? They’ve sent out nearly 100 of these phones across the country, and you’re already betting I’ll be the first to lose control?"
Su Yuqing replied apologetically, "Because among the Hunters currently participating in the program, your Pollution Value is the highest."
Feng Ling: "..."
"Come on, I’ll take you to the armory to see the weapons." Su Yuqing stood up and said with a smile, "Seeing them in person is much more effective than looking at pictures on your phone."
Feng Ling’s spirits lifted, and she followed Su Yuqing to the Inspection Bureau’s armory.
Her 16 Contribution Value points didn’t seem like much, but they could get her a lot of good stuff. For example, one point could be exchanged for 480 grenades.
It was a truly generous amount.
Other weapons were also tempting, but Feng Ling hadn’t received any systematic weapons training. She only took 120 grenades—30 per case, making for exactly four cases.
In addition, she also redeemed a military-grade drone and a terrain scanner, the same kind Qin Liang had treasured so much.
The redemption interface had video tutorials for their operation, but she figured they would still give her a headache when it came time to actually use them.
Su Yuqing and her assistant helped her load the weapons into her vehicle, giving Feng Ling the satisfying feeling of a full haul.
She got into the driver’s seat in a good mood, ready to set off.
Su Yuqing stood outside the window, instructing her, "Give me a call when you get there. Sanqing Mountain doesn’t have its own Alien Supervision Branch; it’s currently managed by the one in Yuquan City. If you run into trouble, you can contact Captain Shen in Yuquan City. He’s a proxy agent for the branch, just like me. I’ve already given him a heads-up, so he’ll look out for you if you need anything..."
Feng Ling nodded repeatedly. "I know, I know."
Su Yuqing continued, "The Maze is different from the outside world. Weapons alone aren’t enough. Food and water are just as important. The terrain on Sanqing Mountain is treacherous; your vehicle might not even be able to make it up there. How do you plan to handle the weight of your equipment? Do you have a backup plan? You need to consider all of these things..."
Feng Ling’s ears were about to fall off. She couldn’t help but cut in, "I mean, Captain Su, how does Ye Zheng even put up with you?"
Su Yuqing’s face darkened instantly. "Who told you?"
Feng Ling: "..."
Su Yuqing shot her a displeased look. "Instead of wasting time on gossip, you should be thinking more about how to refine and optimize your own preparations. I’ll be honest with you: Ye Zheng is also entering a Maze in a few days. She’s heading north. Her entire team, aside from five researchers, is composed of the most powerful Inspectors selected by the main bureau. The amount of weaponry and equipment they’re carrying is more than ten times what you have. Do you really think you’re going on a vacation?"
’Did I just hit a nerve?’ Feng Ling wondered. ’Why the sudden change in attitude?’
Su Yuqing stared at Feng Ling’s face and said in a low voice, "If you can make it out safely, all the information you gather about the Maze will be a great help to them. But if... you don’t make it out, no one is coming in to save you. Understand?"
"Understood," Feng Ling replied helplessly.
"Feng Ling," Su Yuqing said, "You have to make it out alive."
Feng Ling quirked her lips. "To be honest, I’m not that attached to being alive. I just want to see what the Divine Statue looks like, so I’m going in to have a look."
Su Yuqing’s expression was grim.
Feng Ling sighed. "I know, you think this is a very serious matter, but I just can’t get worked up about it. If I live, I live. If I die, I die. It’s no big deal. I’ve never grieved for anyone while I’ve been alive, and no one will shed a tear when I’m dead. Anyway, I promise you, I’ll do my best~"
A strange expression appeared on Su Yuqing’s stern face. "If you die in there, someone will cry at your grave."
The assistant nodded from the side.
"Haha, you’re so funny, Captain Su~" Feng Ling didn’t chat any longer. She waved her hand. "I’m off~"
She gripped the steering wheel and drove the RV away.
In the rearview mirror, the figures of Su Yuqing and her assistant grew smaller and smaller until they disappeared.
Huangfu Miaomiao scooted over to the front passenger seat and said to Feng Ling, "The Maze isn’t actually that scary. I looked up guides on the forums. Every Maze has an absolutely safe zone, a place specifically for players to rest and resupply. We can kill monsters near the safe house, and once we have enough points, we can just hide! Heh heh!"
’Such a lovely thought.’
Feng Ling shot her a sidelong glance. "This safe house you’re talking about—does it work for humans?"
Huangfu Miaomiao froze. "I don’t know..."
Feng Ling gripped the steering wheel, her eyes on the road ahead. "You’re players," she said flatly. "If you can’t win, you can hide. If you can’t hide, you can just log off. What can we humans do? Heh. We just have to tough it out~"
Huangfu Miaomiao pressed her lips together and fell silent.
Feng Ling gazed at the distant mountain shadows, recalling Su Yuqing’s repeated warnings and thinking of Ye Zheng’s fully-armed team. The contrast with Huangfu Miaomiao’s carefree attitude felt ironic.
She clicked her tongue.
When Hou Yi shot down the suns, the ten suns were just out having a wild time, never considering they were making life unlivable in the mortal world.
When people go camping on a weekend getaway, setting up tents in the wild, they don’t think about how many ants they might crush.
The principle was more or less the same.
’I just wonder, how long can an ant like me survive?’
Feng Ling freed one hand, patted Huangfu Miaomiao’s head, and ruffled her hair with a smile.
Huangfu Miaomiao didn’t dare move a muscle. ’Feng Ling is so moody,’ she thought. ’It’s terrifying.’
「...」
As they got closer to the scenic area, the traffic on the road grew heavier.
Feng Ling noticed that most of the cars were filled with children.
Just as she was finding it odd, a large bus full of parents and children drove past. A banner on its side read: "Happy June 1st Parent-Child Study Tour."
"Oh... so today is June 1st." Feng Ling looked on in curiosity. "It’s Children’s Day, but instead of taking their kids to an amusement park, they’re going mountain climbing? What are these parents thinking?"
On the outskirts of the scenic area, all the vehicles were entering the parking lot in an orderly fashion.
Feng Ling got out of the car with Huangfu Miaomiao. Standing among the parent-child groups, the two of them blended in with surprising harmony, as if they were part of the crowd.
"Wow, are you two on a road trip in an RV? That’s so cool~" A young mother in a sun hat, accompanied by a pair of seven or eight-year-old twins, greeted them.
Feng Ling replied casually, "Yeah, we’re on a trip and were just passing through, so we stopped to rest for a bit. There are so many kids here today."
"Well, it’s Children’s Day, and it happens to be a weekend, so it’s a good time to bring the kids out to get in touch with nature," the young mother replied with a smile.
Though it was a bit forward, Feng Ling still asked the question on her mind: "Why not take them to an amusement park?"
"We can go to an amusement park anytime, but the chance to go up the mountain and pray to the gods is rare," the young mother said. "These Alien Species have everyone terrified. What parent doesn’t want to pray for their child’s safety? No one wants their kid to be ’logged into’ by an Alien Species. I heard that praying at the Three Pure Ones Palace is quite effective, so we brought our kids here. We get to climb the mountain for exercise and pray to the gods at the same time—killing two birds with one stone. My neighbor took their kids to Nanshan Temple, and some people are taking their kids to church. Our family, well, we plan on praying at every single one."
