Chapter 75: Chapter 73: Little Sister

Ye Zheng glanced at the conference room door, where the members of the soon-to-depart expedition team were seated.

"Yes... The research team has already taken protective measures."

While on the phone with Ye Zheng, Su Yuqing was also communicating with Feng Ling. He learned from her that the Maze’s contamination was caused by the Maze Administrator’s death, and he relayed this news to Ye Zheng.

Ye Zheng clutched his phone and spoke in a low voice, "...We’ve been preparing for this operation for too long, both in terms of personnel and supplies. We’re set to leave tomorrow. We can’t just cancel it at the last minute because of a single phone call. Besides, the Alien Species said the contamination is irreversible, but are we supposed to just accept that? We have to try. Even if we fail, at least we’ll know we tried."

Su Yuqing fell silent.

Of course, he knew an operation that had been in the works for so long wouldn’t be canceled over a single phone call. He was just worried about Ye Zheng’s safety.

On the other end of the line, Feng Ling was still pressing him. "Old Su, shouldn’t we post this on the forums? There might be people gathering teams to try and clear the Maze. After all, there are plenty of civilian Card Holders out there. If you don’t say anything, I’ll take that as a yes..."

"Go ahead and post it," Su Yuqing said, his voice heavy. "You post on the forums, and I’ll contact Captain Shen in Yuquan City. I’ll try to get the Yuquan City branch to send you reinforcements. Also..."

He paused for a moment before adding, "Keep an eye on that Maze Administrator with you. Don’t let him die."

The call ended.

Feng Ling stared at her phone, baffled. She muttered to herself, ’Why’d he suddenly get so gloomy? What’s eating him?’

"When are we going to the Maze?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked impatiently. "If a bunch of players are really hunting the Maze Administrator, shouldn’t we get into the Maze as soon as possible? If we run into them, we’ll have to figure out how to save him."

She gestured toward Li Qing, as if he were a liability.

Li Qing sat with his head lowered, quiet and sullen.

Feng Ling was also annoyed. She sighed. "I’ll post on the forums first."

She opened the Alien Star forum app and quickly composed and published a post.

Then she remembered her new phone also had a dedicated forum for Hunters, so she copied the text and posted it on the Hunter Alliance forum as well.

After that flurry of activity, Feng Ling felt she had done her part for world peace and the survival of humanity.

"Okay, that should do it."

She stood up, grabbed the Cat Spider and Cat Owl from inside the RV, and stuffed them into their Pet Boxes. Then, holding one box in each hand, she said to the other two, "Let’s go. First stop, Goddess Peak."

Li Qing looked like he wanted to say something, but held his tongue. In the end, he just followed the two women out of the RV...

Getting into the scenic area didn’t go smoothly.

First off, pets weren’t allowed inside.

So, Feng Ling had Li Qing carry the Pet Boxes for her. The park staff could stop a tourist, but they wouldn’t stop a Daoist.

Then, when it was time to take the cable car, Li Qing didn’t have money for a ticket.

Feng Ling had no choice but to front him the money for his ticket.

Li Qing looked broke, but Feng Ling hadn’t expected him to be so broke he couldn’t even afford a cable car ticket.

The three of them, along with the two Pet Boxes, piled into a cable car. Feng Ling couldn’t help but ask Li Qing, "Where’s your money?"

Li Qing paused. "...I transferred it to you."

"I mean the rest of your money," Feng Ling said, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes. "You don’t have any left?"

Li Qing frowned and explained, "I have 25 yuan left. It really wasn’t enough for a ticket. I’m not lying."

Feng Ling was speechless.

’He’s this broke and he still transferred money to me? I really don’t get how this guy’s mind works.’

The cable car reached the station, which was swarming with tourists.

As far as the eye could see, vendors were selling water, roasted sausages, and corn, while others peddled good-luck charms, incense, and traditional handicrafts. The place was bustling.

They had to walk past the crowds to finally experience the serene, ethereal atmosphere of the mountain forest.

None of the three were in the mood for sightseeing, however. As soon as they arrived, they headed straight for Goddess Peak.

Li Qing led the way, with Feng Ling and Huangfu Miaomiao following behind.

Huangfu Miaomiao was practically buzzing with excitement.

Ever since she’d gotten the lucky clue about the Maze, she had been preparing to enter it. After all the twists and turns she’d been through, her wish was finally about to come true!

This was the very definition of sweet victory after a bitter struggle!

At the thought, Huangfu Miaomiao’s little legs pumped even faster.

"Big sis!"

A child’s voice suddenly rang out, calling for ’Big sis,’ but the group paid it no mind, unsure whose kid it was.

The three of them paid it no mind and kept walking briskly forward.

But the voice caught up to them. "Big sis! Big sis!"

Huangfu Miaomiao finally realized the voice sounded familiar. She had just turned and stopped when a little girl, about four or five years old, ran right up and threw her arms around her, shouting with a smile, "Big sis!"

"...Sasha?" Huangfu Miaomiao’s eyes widened in astonishment. She immediately looked around. "Why are you by yourself? Where are your mom and dad?"

"I don’t know!" the little girl replied in a cutesy, high-pitched voice.

"What’s going on?" Feng Ling asked with a frown. "Hey, Little Skeleton, since when do you have a sister?"

Huangfu Miaomiao subconsciously touched her face.

She had lost her skeleton mask; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been recognized.

"She’s the kid from the family I... logged into. Her name is Huangfu Shasha." Huangfu Miaomiao said, picking up the little girl, looking a bit awkward. "She just started kindergarten. She doesn’t know anything."

"Big sis, why don’t you come home anymore?" the little girl asked, confused. "If you keep staying away, Mommy’s gonna spank your bottom."

Feng Ling was about to lose her mind. "Don’t tell me we have to babysit now."

Goddess Peak was right ahead of them, and she was supposed to be entering a Maze!

Li Qing suggested, "Let’s take her to the staff at the cable car station. It’s crowded today, so she probably just got separated. Her parents can’t be far."

Feng Ling let out a frustrated sigh and stomped back the way they came. "...Fine. Let’s find an employee."

They returned to the cable car station.

Before they even found an employee, they saw a young couple rushing toward them.

The woman was in front, her eyes bloodshot. She snatched the little girl from Huangfu Miaomiao’s arms and shrieked, "Don’t touch her! YOU MONSTER!!!"

The man’s face was pale and taut. He immediately pulled his wife and daughter behind him, as if terrified Huangfu Miaomiao would harm them.

The little girl, hurt by the rough tug and frightened by her usually gentle mother’s suddenly twisted expression, burst into tears.

The other tourists all turned to stare.

Seeing this, Li Qing quickly tried to explain. "You’ve misunderstood. The girl got lost, and we found her on the path, so we were bringing her back."

Li Qing had an honest, gentle face, and combined with his Daoist robes, he easily earned people’s trust.

The man, shielding his wife and daughter, said a "thank you" to Li Qing.

The woman clutched her child tightly, her gaze fixed on Huangfu Miaomiao with utter loathing.

Huangfu Miaomiao didn’t dare to meet the woman’s eyes. She lowered her head and hurried away, following behind Li Qing and Feng Ling.

Once the three of them were a good distance away, the woman’s composure finally broke. She hugged her child and sobbed uncontrollably. The man’s eyes were red-rimmed as well.

At the busy cable car station, a teenager in a straw hat had been squatting in a hidden corner the entire time.

He lifted the brim of his hat slightly and spoke into his phone, "Found the Maze Administrator. But something seems a little off..."

"What’s off about it?"

"Yep. The Administrator is being followed by a hidden Boss."
