Chapter 76: Chapter 74: Goddess Peak

"A hidden Boss?" The voice on the other end of the phone was utterly astonished.

"That’s right. A human-form Maze Administrator, a hidden Boss, and a player." The boy in the straw hat scoffed and gave a sarcastic laugh. "What a strange combination."

The other end was silent for a moment before saying, "If it’s inconvenient to make a move, then switch targets."

The boy chuckled softly. "What, afraid I’ll die at the hands of a hidden Boss? It’s just a Sub-adult. I won’t necessarily lose."

"I just don’t think it’s necessary."

"Don’t worry, I won’t be reckless."

The boy’s gaze fell on the couple with their daughter in the crowd, the corners of his mouth curling into a malicious grin. "I’ll find a chance to test them."

......

...

Feng Ling walked quickly up the stone steps, glancing back at Huangfu Miaomiao from time to time.

Compared to her high spirits when they first set out, Huangfu Miaomiao was now clearly wilted.

"Hey, you can’t be serious? Just because someone called you a monster?" Feng Ling said, raising an eyebrow. "To humans, you players are monsters. She was just speaking the plain truth."

Huangfu Miaomiao pouted unhappily.

Feng Ling, seemingly heartless, said with a smile, "It’s quite interesting when you think about it. She called you a monster, which obviously means she’s known for a while that her daughter was replaced by an Alien Species. But you’re not on the Alien Species wanted list, which means the couple didn’t report it to the authorities. Tsk, they’re still too soft-hearted."

Huangfu Miaomiao replied sullenly, "Actually, she was very good to me at the beginning..."

"She was being good to her daughter, not to you," Feng Ling corrected her.

"I know," Huangfu Miaomiao nodded helplessly. "When I logged in, I didn’t expect it to be like this. By the time I figured out how to live in the human world, I’d already revealed too many flaws, and then I was kicked out of the house by that family’s mom and dad."

"Family and friends you live with every day? There’s no way you could hide it from them. Unless you happen to log into an orphan like me." Feng Ling mocked herself, then continued, "Otherwise, no matter who you log into, you’ll become the lifelong enemy of their family. You should have been prepared for that."

Huangfu Miaomiao sighed. "I didn’t know it would be like this when I logged in. I don’t have a family."

Feng Ling froze for a second, then turned back and asked her, "You’re an orphan too?"

Huangfu Miaomiao shrugged helplessly. "What I mean is, where I’m from, everyone comes out of a breeding pod. We don’t have social relationships like parents and family."

Feng Ling exclaimed in amazement, "Then how did you grow up?"

"There are public schools that help socialize newborns," Li Qing said from up ahead. "The time it takes for a human cub to reach adulthood is too long, so after genetic modification became widespread, scientists invented special breeding pods. You just soak inside for one to two years, and a newborn’s various physical indicators can reach the level of an 11- to 13-year-old."

As he spoke, he glanced back at Feng Ling. "So, in our world, there are no children."

"That’s right," Huangfu Miaomiao nodded in agreement, then added with a grin, "When I first saw my ’little sister,’ I thought she was so small and cute. Her fingers and toes could actually be that tiny. It was incredible."

Feng Ling felt it was strange. She took a few quick steps to catch up to Li Qing and walk beside him.

She asked Li Qing, "You just said... the growth time for a human cub is too long. Do you guys count as human?"

Li Qing neither nodded nor shook his head. He answered after some deliberation, "We share a common origin with humans, but we’re not from the same world. However, it’s precisely because of this shared genetic origin that the system probably chose to start the game here."

’Then we humans are really unlucky,’ Feng Ling thought.

She turned back and asked Huangfu Miaomiao, "If you skipped your entire childhood, does that mean your real age is only a few years old?"

Huangfu Miaomiao was taken aback for a moment, then began, "My skeletal development age is already..."

"Not your skeletal age," Feng Ling waved her hand dismissively. "Just tell me straight. How many years did it take for you to grow from a single cell to your current size?"

Huangfu Miaomiao was very unhappy. "This way of determining age isn’t scientific at all!"

"Then give me an unscientific answer for how old you are," Feng Ling retorted.

Huangfu Miaomiao pursed her lips and said, "Five."

Feng Ling turned back around, satisfied.

Huangfu Miaomiao stomped her foot resentfully.

"We’re almost there. That’s Goddess Peak," Li Qing said, pointing into the distance.

Feng Ling squinted and looked ahead.

In the distance sat a giant rock, narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. Its silhouette resembled a woman with long hair flowing over her shoulders, sitting serenely on the mountain’s peak. Set against the azure sky and misty clouds, it possessed a certain divine charm, a view that could be considered one of the finest on Sanqing Mountain.

Li Qing explained as they walked, "Legend has it that this goddess was the twenty-third daughter of the Queen Mother of the West. Her name was Yao Ji. One day, she descended to the mortal world for leisure and met an herb gatherer named Meng Long. She was moved by his diligence and simplicity, and the two became husband and wife. Later, when the Jade Emperor learned of this, he seized Yao Ji and brought her back to the Heavenly Palace. Meng Long was turned into a giant python by a Spell and became Giant Python Peak. When Yao Ji learned that Meng Long had met this fate, she escaped the Heavenly Palace and turned into Goddess Peak, opposite Giant Python Peak."

He pointed to the other side of the mountain. "That over there is Giant Python Peak. Since the Maze is based on the local geography, understanding some of the local legends might be helpful to you."

Feng Ling laughed. "In ancient myths, these goddesses and immortal maidens don’t seem to be picky about marriage at all. They just meet some random cowherd, woodcutter, or herb gatherer, and they fall for them. So free-spirited."

Huangfu Miaomiao asked, "The Queen Mother of the West’s daughter married a mortal. Why didn’t the Queen Mother of the West intervene? Why was it the Jade Emperor?"

Feng Ling propped her chin on her hand, pondering. "Maybe... the Jade Emperor is Yao Ji’s dad?"

She didn’t know much about mythology. Anyway, in the TV shows she watched as a kid, the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother were a couple.

"No, no, they’re not really from the same system..." Li Qing quickly waved his hands. "The Queen Mother of the West appeared much earlier than the Jade Emperor. In the legends, she was the goddess of longevity who controlled fortune and misfortune, disasters, and plagues. Her power was boundless, and she possessed her own independent divinity. She was one of the ancestral mother goddesses of humanity. Later, during the Sui and Tang dynasties, people began to worship the Jade Emperor. The Queen Mother of the West became known colloquially as the Queen Mother, and over time, she was turned into the Jade Emperor’s consort deity. Her image also changed from wild and fierce to one of grace and nobility, more in line with popular aesthetics."

Feng Ling giggled. ’So forcing couples together is a traditional art form, huh,’ she thought. ’Not even Immortals are safe.’

She looked at Li Qing, amused, and asked, "As an Alien Species, how do you know so much? Did you study it specifically?"

Li Qing nodded and replied in a deadpan voice, "My Card is Divination Master. The term ’Divination Master’ comes from Taoist culture, so understanding related knowledge is basic homework. In fact, everyone should properly research the origin of the Cards they hold. The more you understand, the better you can judge which Cards to absorb."

Feng Ling’s interest was piqued. She tilted her head to look at him. "What type of Card do you think I should absorb?"

Li Qing was slightly taken aback and turned to look at her.

"Wait, don’t say anything yet," Feng Ling said, turning her head to Huangfu Miaomiao. "You ask him."
