Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 77 - 75: The Monkey Became a DemonChapter 77: Chapter 75: The Monkey Became a Demon
Huangfu Miaomiao asked earnestly, "What type of Card do you think the Nest should digest?"
Li Qing lowered his gaze. "...I don’t know."
"He doesn’t know," Huangfu Miaomiao immediately told Feng Ling.
Feng Ling arched a brow, the smile on her face fading slightly.
"You don’t have to repeat that. I heard him."
Li Qing could clearly feel the previously pleasant atmosphere turn a little colder...
He glanced at her and defended himself in a low voice, "I know nothing about the term ’Nest.’ I don’t know its origin or history, nor its extended allegorical or symbolic meanings. Since you’ve already leveled up to a Sub-adult, you should understand this Card better than I do."
"Sub-adult?" Feng Ling looked confused.
Huangfu Miaomiao, who was beside her, whispered, "Every time you level up, the system sends an announcement to all players. Your current growth stage is Sub-adult."
Feng Ling was taken aback.
’I always thought I was pretty strong, but I’m only a Sub-adult? Not even a full adult?’
’...Then again, if my Pollution Value is already at 29% as a Sub-adult, how is it supposed to increase later on?’
Feng Ling frowned, troubled.
She couldn’t grasp the meaning of the Nest. The Mirror Salamander’s proliferation Skill clearly fit the Nest’s reproductive nature, yet digesting it resulted in a Pollution Value of a whopping 14%. Meanwhile, Cards like Mantis and Centipede, which had nothing to do with the Nest, only gave 1%. She was truly perplexed.
Just then, her phone suddenly rang—
Feng Ling answered the call. The voice on the other end belonged to an unfamiliar young woman.
"Hello, this is the Yuquan City Branch of the Alien Species Inspection Bureau. I am Pei Xianjue, Deputy Captain of the Inspection Action Team. I got your phone number from Captain Su Yuqing. We’re preparing to head over as reinforcements. Could you send your location again?"
’Whoa~’
’Su Yuqing works fast.’
Feng Ling marveled inwardly and replied, "Alright, one moment."
While still on the call, she opened WeChat and saw a friend request.
It seemed the person had tried adding her as a friend, but called directly when she didn’t respond to the request.
Feng Ling tapped the friend request and saw the person’s WeChat name: Guardian of Yuquan City · Burning Fire Queen · Alien Species Harvester · The Pei Family’s One and Only Flame Princess · The Ever-Forward Jue.
Feng Ling: "..."
’I mean...’
’Are all deputy captains a little unhinged?’
Feng Ling didn’t want such a long string of text popping up every time they chatted. After accepting the friend request, she added a contact alias, shortening the other person’s nickname to a much more manageable "Yuquan City·Jue."
Then she sent her location to the contact.
"I’ve sent the location," Feng Ling said.
"Got it! I’ll hang up now. See you in a bit!" the person on the other end replied.
The call ended.
’Did Su Yuqing deliberately exaggerate the Maze’s pollution level when she contacted the Yuquan Branch?’ Feng Ling wondered. ’Otherwise, why would reinforcements be on their way so quickly?’
She thought for a moment before asking Li Qing, "What time can the Maze be opened today?"
"Sunset has been around 7:10 PM lately. Based on the information from the riddle’s clue, we need to count back about twenty minutes, which means the portal should open around 6:50 PM." Li Qing glanced around, his brow furrowed slightly. "There are too many tourists on the mountain today. We’ll have to clear the area by 4 PM at the latest, or we risk ordinary people getting swept into the Maze."
Feng Ling glanced at the time on her phone.
It was already 2:00 PM.
"Is there anywhere to rest nearby?" Feng Ling asked him. "The people from the Inspection Bureau will be here soon. We should find a place to wait for them."
Li Qing looked troubled. "The Inspectors can’t know my identity. They’re too conspicuous. If I’m seen with them, other players will find me sooner or later."
Feng Ling didn’t see that as a problem. "Why not just enter the Maze with us?"
"What?" Li Qing was stunned.
Feng Ling said, "The players want to kill you because they want the Maze to merge with reality. If we go into the Maze and eliminate the Maze Master, the Maze will disappear. Then, the players will have no reason to kill you anymore."
Li Qing stared at her, dumbfounded and unable to speak for a long moment.
He felt that the Boss standing before him was far too arrogant. She possessed an almost blind confidence, and he felt compelled to correct her flawed perspective.
"Aisha, you may not understand, but the Maze isn’t as simple as you think," Li Qing told Feng Ling with utmost seriousness. "Although I’ve never entered one myself, as an administrator, I can see the progress data for every Maze. Eighty percent of players only stick to the outer edges on their first visit. Thirty-five percent manage to reach the center by their second or third trip. And any player who successfully kills a Maze Master has to explore it at least three times or more. So, for you to think you can eliminate the Maze Master on your first try... it’s virtually impossible."
As she listened, Huangfu Miaomiao’s mouth slowly fell open. Once Li Qing had finished, she asked uncertainly, "What did you just call her?"
"Aisha," Li Qing said, puzzled. "Isn’t that her name?"
Huangfu Miaomiao: "..."
Feng Ling silently rubbed the goosebumps on her arm. "Daoist, you’re the one who doesn’t understand."
Li Qing looked at her in confusion. "I don’t understand?"
Feng Ling gazed toward the distant Goddess Peak. "Look, the scenery here is beautiful, and it’s hiding a dungeon entrance. It’s fun and interesting. If I were a player, I’d be willing to explore the game two, three, four, five, six, seven, or eight times. Killing the Maze Master wouldn’t matter, as long as I could earn points. But I’m not a player."
She chuckled, arching a brow at Li Qing. "I’m human. What human has the spare time to dawdle in your game? When a human enters a Maze, they have only one goal: eliminate the Maze Master."
Li Qing was stunned.
They were different species, with conflicting interests; it was only natural their ways of thinking would differ.
For the first time, Li Qing truly understood humanity’s urgency to eliminate the Mazes. To them, it was a thorn in their side, an unbearable irritation they couldn’t stand for a single second longer.
"AHHHH!!!"
A scream cut through their conversation.
All the tourists on the mountain began searching for the source of the sound. Suddenly, they spotted it: on a distant, ancient pine tree, a monkey nearly taller than a man was leaping between the branches, clutching a little girl!
"Someone help! A monkey dragged a kid away!"
"That monkey’s a monster!!!"
The crowd cried out in alarm.
Huangfu Miaomiao saw the child’s clothes, recognized her instantly, and cried out in shock, "That’s my sister!"
Her body instantly dissolved into a black shadow, speeding past the guardrail in pursuit of the monkey in the woods!
Feng Ling picked up the clothes Huangfu Miaomiao had left on the ground, hastily stuffed them into her backpack, then shot Li Qing a frowning glance. "You’re not dead yet, but a monkey is already contaminated by the Maze?"
Li Qing’s face paled. "That’s impossible! I’ve been standing guard here this whole time. There’s no way the Maze could have contaminated the animals on the mountain!"
