Chapter 78: Chapter 76: Pei Xianjue
Feng Ling had no time to listen to Li Qing’s explanation. She put one hand on the guardrail, vaulted over it, and jumped—
The terrain of Sanqing Mountain was incredibly steep. Below the guardrail were hard, rugged granite formations and thick, ancient pines that had grown for a hundred years.
The moment Feng Ling landed, her vision was obscured by the dense vegetation. She couldn’t see where the monkey had scurried off to. On top of that, with the tourists on the mountain constantly screaming and shouting, she couldn’t even clearly hear any sounds from the forest.
Li Qing ran after her, calling out, "Wait!"
He pulled out his phone, which had a long chain of cheap cartoon beads dangling from it. With swift movements, he detached three plastic beads and tossed them into the air—
The beads flew high and then quickly fell back down.
Feng Ling was completely confused, but Li Qing pointed confidently in the direction of one of the beads and said, "This way! Follow it!"
Feng Ling was stunned. "Is that accurate?"
"It should be!" Li Qing lifted the front of his Daoist robe, revealing the bound trouser legs and green shoes with cloud-patterned socks underneath. He ran nimbly down the mountain, as agile as someone who frequently traversed mountains and ridges.
Watching his rapidly retreating back, Feng Ling let out a sigh of admiration and immediately followed.
The mountain path was treacherous, with many sections being near-vertical drops. Even with Li Qing leading the way, Feng Ling felt like she had become a human rollercoaster.
The terrain here was simply too steep. If the monkey let go midway, the child would surely be dashed to death.
Luckily, Huangfu Miaomiao had reacted quickly enough. By the time Feng Ling and Li Qing were halfway there, Huangfu Miaomiao, who was ahead of them, had already rescued the child. In her shadow form, she moved incredibly fast and silently. The moment she got close enough, she ensnared the child in the monkey’s grasp!
The monkey shrieked in terror and fell from the tree.
The child fell too, but Huangfu Miaomiao acted as a human cushion below, catching the girl and preventing any injury from the fall.
However, the little girl was still crying her heart out. She had several large, bluish-purple bumps on her forehead and scratches from the monkey on her arm.
Feng Ling caught up, tossed her clothes to Huangfu Miaomiao, and said, "She’ll need a rabies shot for this, right?"
"Where’s that monkey from just now?" Li Qing asked Huangfu Miaomiao anxiously.
"Over there." As Huangfu Miaomiao slipped into her clothes, a half-formed, black, sticky arm emerged from her sleeve to point the way for Li Qing.
The monkey lay motionless on the ground.
"Did you kill the monkey?" Feng Ling asked Huangfu Miaomiao.
"No, it just fell out of the tree on its own as soon as I got here," Huangfu Miaomiao said.
"Fell on its own?" Feng Ling raised an eyebrow and looked at the monkey on the ground.
By this time, Li Qing had reached the monkey and was crouching down to examine it. "Aside from being slightly larger than a normal monkey, there are no outward signs of it being a Pollution Body. I wonder what’s going on inside..."
The monkey’s throat twitched slightly.
Feng Ling frowned. She was instantly reminded of killing the insects in the cave; the corpses parasitized by them had also twitched like that just before a bug crawled out of their throats.
The thought had barely flashed through her mind when the Bone Blade on her shoulder shot out!
At that exact moment, a twisted, wire-like worm was crawling out of the monkey’s mouth, lunging for Li Qing’s face—
Before Li Qing could react, he saw the worm before him—along with the entire monkey’s head—be split in two by a single strike!
His eyes widened in horror. After a two-second pause, he turned his head to look at Feng Ling. "You... you knew all along?"
"Knew what?" Feng Ling retracted her Bone Blade. "I just took a random swing. Besides, Pollution Bodies aren’t a protected species."
Li Qing: "..."
Huangfu Miaomiao covered her sister’s eyes, adopting a grown-up tone to soothe the child. "You can’t look, Sasha, be good. Don’t look. The dead monkey is too gross, you’ll have nightmares if you see it."
Hearing this, the little girl stopped crying. Instead, she blinked curiously and peeked at the dead monkey on the ground through the gaps between Huangfu Miaomiao’s fingers.
Li Qing looked at the horsehair worm, which was gradually curling up and shriveling in death. He said hesitantly, "This monkey wasn’t a Pollution Body. It was parasitized by a horsehair worm."
"What?" Feng Ling frowned. "Shouldn’t the hosts of horsehair worms be grasshoppers and mantises? How could one parasitize a monkey?"
’Besides, that half of the worm on the ground is obviously much thicker than a horsehair worm, and its front end even has teeth like fishhooks.’
"It must be some player’s ability." Li Qing’s expression was grave. "The player is targeting me. They’re likely on the mountain right now."
Hearing this, Feng Ling looked into the distance. The mountain plank roads were crowded with tourists, and some were even pointing binoculars in her direction.
"Which one is the player?" she asked with a frown.
Huangfu Miaomiao strained to look. "They’re too far away, I can’t tell."
Feng Ling turned her head and asked Li Qing, "Can your beads figure out where they are?"
She found Li Qing’s Skill quite interesting. For her to find someone, she had to mark them first, but Li Qing could apparently just toss some beads to know a target’s location.
Li Qing frowned and shook his head. "I can perform a blessing, a divination, and a search once each day. The first use has about 92% accuracy, the second drops to 48%, and the third is only 13%."
"I see..." Feng Ling thought to herself, ’48% is still worth a shot.’
Just then, several drones appeared out of nowhere, circling in the sky. They were equipped with loudspeakers, which were broadcasting a looped announcement from the scenic area:
[Dear visitors, due to inclement weather, the scenic area is now temporarily closed. For your safety, please cooperate with staff to descend the mountain in an orderly fashion and proceed to the service area for a refund. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience...]
Huangfu Miaomiao said urgently, "The park is closing! I have to get my sister back quickly."
Feng Ling sighed. "Let’s head back for now. My Pet Box is still where we left it."
Li Qing looked like he wanted to say something but held back, following behind them with a worried expression.
He still felt uneasy, suspecting that the person hiding in the shadows would try to make a move on him again.
The three of them returned to their previous location.
There wasn’t a tourist in sight; they had probably been guided back to the cable car station by the staff.
A drone flew slowly in front of Feng Ling and spoke to her:
"Hello, this is Pei Xianjue, who you were in contact with earlier. I’m on my way. I’ve just been informed about the sudden animal attack in the scenic area. The child’s parents have already called the police. You can take the child to the cable car station first; her parents are waiting for her there."
Feng Ling nodded at the drone in response.
She hadn’t wanted to speak, feeling it was strange to talk to a drone, but remembering what Li Qing had said about the monkey being parasitized, she hesitated for a moment before clearing her throat and saying to the drone:
"The monkey attacked because it was parasitized by a worm. It might have been caused by an Alien Species’s Skill. You’d better screen the tourists coming down the mountain. There might be an Alien Species hiding among them."
"Understood." The drone hovered two or three meters above Feng Ling, its voice clear and distinct. "Let’s meet at the cable car station later as well."
