Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 79 - 77: Sanqing Mountain MazeChapter 79: Chapter 77: Sanqing Mountain Maze
At the cable car station, returning tourists lined up for the cable cars.
A slender youth in a straw hat got into a cable car with a family of three. He pulled out his phone and sent a message: A boss showed up. Wasn’t a good time to act.
The child inside the cabin pressed against the glass window. "Dad, Mom, look! There’s a helicopter!"
"Oh my, you’re right..." the child’s mother said in surprise. "Today is so strange. The resort suddenly closed, and now there’s a helicopter. The weather forecast didn’t mention any warnings."
"Something must have happened. They were probably afraid of causing a panic, so they’re using the weather as an excuse to get tourists off the mountain," the father said, patting his child’s head. "Still, we already went to the Three Pure Ones Palace to pray, so the trip wasn’t a complete waste."
The youth glanced at the helicopter flying overhead and tugged the brim of his hat lower.
His phone vibrated softly as a new message popped up:
"Stay hidden. The Inspection Bureau is here."
The youth frowned and replied, "Got it."
The operation today had yielded no results, and he was frustrated. As if not wanting to be underestimated by the person on the other end, the youth sent another message: I’ll find a chance to take care of him next time.
But the reply was: "Head north to the Maze in Daling Forest."
"Daling Forest?" the youth murmured. Doubt clouded his mind; he remembered that the Maze Administrator there had already been dealt with.
"The Inspection Bureau has assembled a team and is heading north. If the Maze Master is killed, the fusion will be interrupted. Xing Guang wants us to get there as soon as possible to intervene."
A vicious glint appeared in the youth’s eyes as he replied, "The Inspection Bureau is too much of a nuisance. We should teach them a lesson."
...
...
Carrying two Pet Boxes, Feng Ling returned to the area near the cable car station.
A long line had already formed, and the tourists were grumbling loudly.
Feng Ling didn’t try to push her way in, instead standing to the side of the line and sending a message to "Yuquan City·Jue" to let them know she had arrived.
After waiting a little longer, a resort staff member brought the child’s parents over.
Perhaps because they had been calmed down beforehand, the parents were generally composed, aside from their red-rimmed eyes. Without a single word to Huangfu Miaomiao, they picked up their child and hurried away.
They didn’t say thank you, of course.
Huangfu Miaomiao didn’t seem to mind. She stood on her tiptoes, smiling happily as she waved goodbye to the little girl.
"She’s so cute!" While waving, she didn’t forget to marvel to Feng Ling about how adorable the little girl was.
Feng Ling rolled her eyes silently.
’An Alien Species fond of a human child. The very idea is absurd.’
Just then, another group of people approached from the direction of the cable cars. The young woman in the lead was staring at Feng Ling with a fiery gaze, making no attempt to hide her enthusiasm—
"Hello! You must be Feng Ling, right?"
She walked over and extended her hand to Feng Ling. "I’m Pei Xianjue, we spoke on the phone. I’m the Deputy Captain of the Yuquan Inspection Bureau."
"Hello." Feng Ling shook the woman’s hand, sizing her up at the same time.
The woman looked to be about her age. She had round, lively cat-like eyes, straight-cut bangs, a round face with a slightly pointed chin, and her hair was pinned up at the back of her head with a green jade hairpin.
Her attire was also very particular, looking custom-designed. On top, she wore a sleeveless, high-collared vest with a Chinese flair. What at first glance appeared to be a long skirt was, on closer inspection, a pair of wide-leg pants. Tucked at her waist were two curved blades. From sheath to hilt, they were wound with gold thread and inlaid with jade, as exquisite as antiques from a century ago.
Feng Ling’s gaze lingered on the curved blades for an extra moment.
She was reminded of her 1,800-yuan axe, which was now nowhere to be found.
Not only that, but the large Iron Hammer she had bought for Little Skeleton had also been destroyed in their last fight.
Feng Ling: "..."
’Why am I suddenly so bummed out...?’
Pei Xianjue grasped Feng Ling’s outstretched hand with both of her own and said with a smile, "My name is a bit of a mouthful, so you can just call me Little Yu. Is it okay if I call you Xiao Ling?"
Feng Ling: "..."
’Please don’t.’
"Xiao Ling, this is Liang Zhou, and this is Bao Changzhi. They’ll be working with us." Pei Xianjue released her hand and began introducing her colleagues. "It’s fine if you can’t remember their names; their nicknames are much easier. Liang Zhou goes by Liang Haohan, and Bao Changzhi is just Baozi."
Feng Ling: "..."
’They’re easy to remember, sure, but... isn’t calling me Xiao Ling right off the bat a little too familiar?’
Pei Xianjue suppressed her excitement, leaned in closer, and asked in a low voice, "Of the two people with you, which one is the Maze Administrator? Go on, introduce us."
Li Qing couldn’t help but shrink back slightly. Pei Xianjue’s sharp eyes immediately caught his reaction. Her own eyes lit up as she turned to Li Qing—
"You must be the Maze Administrator!"
Pei Xianjue fixed her round, cat-like eyes on Li Qing and said with a smile, "From this moment on, we will do everything in our power to ensure your safety, until the Maze is cleared!"
Li Qing: "..."
He couldn’t help but wonder. ’Have I been hiding on the mountain for too long? I usually only interact with my fellow disciples. Is that why I overreact so much when dealing with outsiders? I was found out the moment I met Feng Ling, and now it’s happened again...’
Returning the courtesy, Feng Ling introduced them to Pei Xianjue. "He’s Li Qing, a Daoist from here. And she’s Huangfu Miaomiao, also an Alien Species, but for now, she’s my assistant."
Pei Xianjue pulled out her phone, beaming. "I’ll add you to our group chat. You should have them join, too."
’Another group chat.’
"Alright..." Feng Ling pulled out her phone.
The group of them stood in place, going through the motions on their phones—adding contacts, creating a group chat, and editing the group name and their display names.
Pei Xianjue picked the group name, one that Feng Ling found very inauspicious: the Sanqing Mountain Maze Suicide Squad.
Once Feng Ling had a handle on who was who, she asked Pei Xianjue, "Do you all have Cards? If a normal person enters the Maze, their genes will be contaminated."
"We all do." Pei Xianjue lifted her chin slightly and smiled. "My Card is the Golden Crow, Liang Haohan’s is the Giant Wolf, and Baozi’s is Lucky Heaven."
Feng Ling was taken aback.
The Golden Crow was clearly from ancient Chinese mythology, the Giant Wolf was Norse, and Lucky Heaven was Indian. Their team was quite the global fusion.
"Your... Yuquan City is full of talent. That’s nice," Feng Ling said after a moment’s thought. "The Qingjiang City inspection team only has one Inspector."
The other positions are filled by members of the Special Attack Team.
Pei Xianjue just smiled, her tone meaningful. "Oh, our Yuquan City only has me as an Inspector, too. Our Captain Shen is also an Inspector, but his Card Ability isn’t suited for combat."
Feng Ling glanced with some surprise at Liang Haohan and Baozi standing beside her.
Liang Haohan was expressionless, standing stiffly by Pei Xianjue’s side like an unfeeling robot. The other young man, Bao Changzhi, seemed quite amiable, however, and even gave Feng Ling a small smile.
"They’re bodyguards my family hired for me." Pei Xianjue patted Feng Ling’s shoulder lightly and lowered her voice. "Card Holders are a luxury commodity these days. Very popular in wealthy circles, you know."
Feng Ling also lowered her voice. "Why don’t they join the inspection team?"
"It takes more than just having a Card to join the inspection team. You need excellent combat instincts, plus absolute loyalty and obedience." Pei Xianjue gave her a once-over, a grin playing on her lips. "I’m guessing you’d never be able to join."
