Chapter 90: Chapter 88: Going Crazy
The Gray Wolf’s eyes flew wide. A low growl erupted from between its teeth as its body rapidly swelled, expanding to its maximum size!
The Horse-faced Monster had somehow come back to life. Even with its guts spilled and its throat gushing blood all over its body, it had revived!
The monster yanked the chains from the ground and whipped them viciously at the Giant Wolf!
The chains lashed out like an iron whip!
Perhaps too shocked by the Horse-faced Monster’s resurrection, the Giant Wolf failed to dodge the attack. A deep, bloody gash instantly appeared on its waist.
He let out a roar and pounced on the Horse-faced Monster, the mane on his neck bristling from the fierce battle!
The violent impact sent the Horse-faced Monster toppling once again. The chains immediately came coiling toward him, but this time the Giant Wolf was prepared. He leaped to the side, clamped his jaws onto one of the Horse-faced Monster’s legs, and began to tear at it furiously!
’If I can kill the Horse-faced Monster once, I can kill it a second time—’ Liang Zhou’s confidence surged.
Killing intent swelled in his chest, and the taste of blood between his teeth made his own blood boil with excitement.
He withstood the Horse-faced Monster’s thunderous punches, holding fast to the leg bone until he bit clean through it!
CRACK!
The Horse-faced Monster lunged with all its might, the chains in its hands clattering endlessly.
Liang Zhou was about to deal the final blow when he suddenly heard Baozi’s terrified shout from a short distance away: "Run!!!"
’Run?’
’Why should I run?’
At first, Liang Zhou didn’t understand. Then he felt a faint tremor in the ground—
He looked up the mountain path in astonishment.
Through the thick fog, a massive figure was rapidly approaching!
He sensed danger and crouched, preparing to fight. A flash of white light streaked before his eyes! A steel fork was thrusting straight at him!
Terror seized Liang Zhou, and he scrambled to get out of the way!
He swerved his wolf head aside and leaped with all his might, but the steel fork pierced his sternum in mid-air.
A coppery-sweet taste filled his throat. He crashed to the ground and coughed up a large mouthful of blood, staring ahead in disbelief.
Through the white fog, a behemoth strode forward. Its skin was dark red, and it was a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull, just like the Bull Demon King!
Within seconds, the Horse-faced Monster struggled back to its feet. Half of its leg was gone, but it hadn’t completely lost its ability to fight. It viciously hurled the hooked chains in its hand at Liang Zhou!
Liang Zhou tried to dodge, but the steel fork pinned his sternum to the ground. The pull tore his flesh, revealing the stark white of bone beneath. His fluffy mane was soaked through with blood.
If not for the Giant Wolf’s superhuman tolerance for pain, he would have died from the agony alone.
He staggered, trying to escape, and managed a desperate leap onto a rock by the side of the path.
Blood streamed from his body like a waterfall, quickly staining the rock red.
Just then, the Horse-faced Monster retracted its chains, and the Minotaur pulled its steel fork from the ground. Their gazes shifted in unison toward Baozi on the mountain path—
A tremor ran through Liang Zhou. "...Baozi!"
Without the Giant Wolf’s protection, Baozi was completely exposed. He barely had time to turn and run before the Horse-faced Monster’s hook plunged straight toward his heart!
Baozi stared at the hook piercing his body, completely frozen. It was as if he couldn’t believe that his most trusted brother had failed to save him.
The chains yanked back, dragging Baozi’s blood-soaked body across the ground.
The Giant Wolf, standing atop the rock, watched the scene unfold, wanting to go down and save him but feeling utterly powerless.
’If I weren’t injured, maybe I could’ve fought those two monsters... No, even if I weren’t injured, I couldn’t have done it!’
Watching helplessly as Baozi was dragged closer and closer to the Horse-faced Monster, the Giant Wolf couldn’t bear to look any longer. He turned, leaped again, and plunged into the dense forest, sprinting madly down the mountain!
’I can’t do it!’
It was true his body could grow to a giant size, but a prolonged battle would only drag him into a quagmire of death.
He had already spent most of his strength in the first fight with the Horse-faced Monster. Now there was a Minotaur, too. ’I can’t do it!’
The wolf ran ceaselessly through the forest. The CRUNCH of twigs snapping underfoot frayed his nerves. Hallucinations flickered before his eyes: he saw his good brother being stuffed into the monster’s gaping maw, chewed up bit by bit.
The Giant Wolf tried to shake off the vision, howling in agony and slamming his head against a tree trunk.
He saw the river turn crimson, saw stones become bleached white bones, saw grotesque phantoms floating in the fog. Reality and illusion intertwined. He was going insane!
...
...
Feng Ling and Pei Xianjue returned to the safe zone and told Li Qing about what happened with Liang Zhou.
They also made sure to describe their encounter with the Horse-faced Monster in detail.
Li Qing listened intently, his expression growing grim.
He mulled it over for a moment before speaking. "Oxhead and Horseface are indeed creatures from folklore. They are messengers of the underworld, tasked with patrolling and capturing souls. That mountain path is likely their patrol route."
"Patrols usually have a purpose. Could they be guarding something? For example, protecting the Maze Master?" Feng Ling guessed.
Li Qing nodded. "That’s certainly a possibility."
Feng Ling thought for a moment. "My Skill allows me to mark and track a target. Liang Zhou killed the Horse-faced Monster before I could mark it. If I can just encounter that monster one more time, I’ll be able to figure out their patrol route and what they’re guarding."
"That shouldn’t be too hard..." Pei Xianjue said thoughtfully. "Oxhead and Horseface are clearly a pair. As long as we follow the mountain path, we’re bound to run into the other one eventually."
"Let’s go. We’ll check it out now." Without a moment’s hesitation, Feng Ling turned to leave.
Pei Xianjue hurried to catch up. "Shouldn’t we plan this out a bit more? Parts of that path run right alongside a cliff, with nowhere to hide. If we end up in a head-on conflict with the monsters, we probably don’t stand a chance."
Feng Ling heard her out and casually asked, "Do you have a plan?"
Pei Xianjue bit her lip. "...No."
Feng Ling glanced back at her and smiled. "Then we’ll play it by ear."
Pei Xianjue let out a breath. "I guess that’s our only option."
She used to think of herself as a decisive, get-it-done kind of person, but compared to Feng Ling, she felt she was lacking a bit of that drive.
She walked quickly beside Feng Ling, once again activating the microphone on her collar to start recording.
"It is now 7:00 AM on June 2nd. We encountered monsters resembling Oxhead and Horseface on a mountain path at Jiulong Mountain Pass, on the south side of Sanqing Mountain. We subsequently lost contact with Hunter Liang Zhou and citizen Bao Changzhi. We are now returning to the mountain path for a second reconnaissance mission..."
Feng Ling teased her, "Recording your last will and testament again?"
"Mhm." Pei Xianjue sighed. "If we don’t make it out of here alive, the Inspection Bureau will definitely find a way to send a new team into the Maze. As long as they find my body, the information I’ve recorded might be of some help."
"And then you’ll make the headlines," Feng Ling said with a grin.
Pei Xianjue gave her a helpless look. "Oh, thank you so much."
Back on the mountain path—
They followed the route from memory, with Li Qing and Huangfu Miaomiao trailing behind.
After walking for a while, both Feng Ling and Pei Xianjue sensed that something was wrong.
The blood on the ground had coagulated and turned black, and signs of a fight were everywhere. But where was the body?
How could such a massive corpse vanish without a trace?
Pei Xianjue was completely baffled and her heart pounded with fear. Just then, she saw a familiar figure lying on the slope ahead. Her eyes widened, and she cried out, "Baozi?!"
