Chapter 91: Chapter 89: Still Breathing

Pei Xianjue rushed over. She saw Baozi lying on the ground, his breathing faint. His chest was a bloody mess, and his entire body was almost soaked in blood.

"Baozi! Baozi!..." Pei Xianjue’s eyes turned red. Her hands hovered helplessly in the air, wanting to help Bao Changzhi up but afraid of aggravating his wounds.

Feng Ling walked closer, glanced at him, then turned her head to Huangfu Miaomiao and said, "He’s still breathing. Give him a shot."

"Okay!" Huangfu Miaomiao immediately exchanged points for a recovery potion and injected Baozi with it.

This was the first time Pei Xianjue had seen such a thing. "What did you just inject him with?"

"A recovery potion. It helps wounds heal quickly," Huangfu Miaomiao explained.

After explaining, she looked at Feng Ling with a troubled expression. "But his wound is so deep. A regular recovery potion has limited effect. It would be great if we had a Strong Recovery Potion, but the strong version is a rare, random drop from completing quests."

Feng Ling said, "Then give him another shot."

Huangfu Miaomiao nodded, exchanged for another vial, and injected Baozi.

Even ten injections of the regular version couldn’t compare to a single strong one, but using a larger dose would indeed have a better effect.

At last, Baozi, who had lost so much blood, slowly regained consciousness.

He opened his eyes and groggily saw Pei Xianjue’s face. His first words were, "Go... Quick, get off the mountain path..."

Pei Xianjue asked urgently, "How did you get hurt this badly?! Where’s Hero? Where is he? What happened?"

Baozi coughed up fresh blood, still repeating, "Get away... get off the mountain path..."

Pei Xianjue was frantic. She helped Baozi up, hoisted him onto her shoulder, and said to Feng Ling, "He can’t walk. Let’s find a place for him to rest."

Feng Ling: "..."

On this mountain, the only safe place to rest was the Three Pure Ones Palace.

’Back to the Three Pure Ones Palace. Again. And again. And again.’

Though it was annoying, Feng Ling knew there was no other choice. She still wanted to get some clues out of Baozi, and she couldn’t question him until he was well-rested.

Back at the safe house, Huangfu Miaomiao contributed her own camping mattress and pillow so the injured Baozi could rest more comfortably.

Pei Xianjue took out a first-aid kit, used scissors to cut away the clothing stuck to his flesh, and took out disinfectant to clean Baozi’s wounds.

The recovery potion was already starting to work. The surface wound was healing and the bleeding had stopped, but a full recovery would still take some time.

Color was visibly returning to Baozi’s face.

He now had the strength to speak. He told Pei Xianjue, "Those two monsters... they attack any living thing on the mountain path."

"Two?" Pei Xianjue said, shocked. "You ran into another monster? The Minotaur?"

Baozi nodded weakly. "Hero’s emotions have been unstable. I was trying to calm him down when the Horse-faced Monster suddenly revived... Hero started fighting it, and then a Minotaur with a steel fork appeared. He was stabbed by the Minotaur’s steel fork and ran away..."

"Ran away? He didn’t take you with him?!" Pei Xianjue couldn’t believe it.

’She could understand why Liang Zhou didn’t like her—after all, in his eyes, she was just a stinking capitalist. But what had Baozi done wrong? For years, he and Baozi had been like brothers, going everywhere together. They were closer than actual siblings!’

’Liang Zhou actually abandoned Baozi and ran off alone!’

’He knew perfectly well that Baozi has no attack Skills!’

"You can’t blame him. He... his emotions are very unstable..." Baozi said in a low voice.

Feng Ling asked curiously, "Then how did you survive?"

Baozi explained with a bitter smile, "My Card, Lucky Heaven, has a life-saving ability. When I’m on the verge of death, it releases a large amount of pheromones that make the enemy feel a sudden sense of happiness and contentment, causing them to forget their killing intent. I was seriously injured and almost unconscious. My body must have released the pheromones then."

"That’s a pretty powerful ability. If it activates every time you’re about to die, doesn’t that mean you’re immortal?" Feng Ling found this fascinating.

"It’s not that great..." Baozi sighed. "My ability is heavily dependent on those pheromones. After releasing such a large amount, it’s like I’ve been completely drained. Now, I can’t release any more pheromones, and I can’t use my Card Ability either."

Pei Xianjue asked worriedly, "Then when will you recover?"

"At least not until tomorrow." Baozi looked disappointed, his voice low. "But I don’t know... if Hero’s mental state can hold out until tomorrow."

Pei Xianjue opened her mouth, but was speechless. Her face was ashen.

’Pei Xianjue is getting way too emotional about this,’ Feng Ling thought. ’Aren’t they just two employees?’

It was the first time Feng Ling had seen a boss dote on her employees as if they were her own sons.

Just then, Pei Xianjue looked over, her face apologetic. "Xiao Ling, I’m sorry. I know I promised to provide you with backup, but with all this going on... I, I don’t think I’ll be much help to you anymore. I have to go find Hero."

Feng Ling was taken aback. "Huh?"

Pei Xianjue crouched down, opened her pack, and began loading bullets into a gun. As she worked, she said, "Hero wasn’t like this before. His Pollution Value must be too high, affecting his mind. That’s why he said all that bastardly stuff. When you get down to it, it’s my fault. I didn’t watch over him properly, which gave my dad an opening..."

Pei Xianjue paused, her expression darkening as she continued in a low voice, "The rich are more afraid of death than the poor. To achieve their goals, money and power can be tools of corruption and domestication. Liang Zhou is just an ordinary person."

"Why do you think he’s been corrupted and domesticated?" Feng Ling asked, confused. "He’s annoying, sure, but what he said isn’t exactly wrong. The Cards really did let him jump up a social class. Entering the Maze is a rare opportunity for him. If he clears the Maze, he’ll become famous overnight, a heroic idol for all of humanity. It’s perfectly normal for him to want to ditch us and take all the credit for himself."

Pei Xianjue hadn’t expected Feng Ling to defend Liang Zhou instead of getting angry.

She gave a wry laugh. "You’re right. They work for me, and I’m always judging their choices from my high horse. I enjoy the benefits of money and power myself, yet I see them being tempted by it as some kind of human corruption. Isn’t that just a form of self-righteousness?"

Feng Ling: "..."

’There’s no need to be *that* self-reflective.’

Pei Xianjue armed herself with every weapon she could carry, slinging her backpack across her chest for easy access. She said, "No matter what, I brought them in here, so it’s my responsibility to get them out in one piece."

She strode purposefully out of the Three Pure Ones Palace.

Feng Ling thought for a moment, then picked up her axe and followed. "I’ll go with you."

Pei Xianjue’s steps faltered slightly. She breathed a sigh of relief. She had been gambling—gambling that Feng Ling would be willing to go with her.

Feng Ling said, "I need to check on his condition. He’s extremely hostile towards me. If he’s dead, so be it. But if he’s not, I’ll have to worry about him launching a sneak attack while I’m fighting monsters in the Maze."

Pei Xianjue: "..."
