The moonrise sky was painted with streaks of silver as a black convoy pulled away from Moon Estate. For the first time in months, Emma wasn’t watching Brandon arrive at her estate and wondering how long he would stay. This time, she was the one going to him.
She sat inside one of the vehicles with Mrs. Thompson beside her. Mrs. Thompson reached over and gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
"You’re doing the right thing. Just follow your heart."
She looked at her for a moment before giving her a small, reassuring smile. She turned her attention to the window and rested her hands in her lap, her fingers intertwined tightly as the familiar gates of Moon Estate slowly disappeared behind them.
No royal meeting awaited her. No official ceremony. No state visit. She was simply following her heart.
Across from them, Bryan sat beside Charlotte, unable to contain his excitement. He leaned forward, his eyes bright as he looked at Emma.
"Mother... are we really going back home?"
She turned toward him, and a gentle smile touched her lips.
"Yes."
Bryan let out an excited cheer, bouncing slightly in his seat. "I knew it!"
Charlotte clapped her tiny hands and looked from Emma to Bryan Oliver. "See Father?"
Mrs. Thompson and Emma laughed softly.
"Yes," Emma said, reaching over to smooth Charlotte’s hair. "We’re going to see Father."
The words still felt unfamiliar on her lips, but as the convoy carried them farther from Moon Estate, she found herself smiling.
Somehow, they also felt like home.
Nightclaw Estate came into view as the convoy drove through the towering gates. The guards straightened immediately and bowed as the vehicles passed, their expressions showing their surprise at seeing Queen Luna Emma arrive without prior notice. Within seconds, word had spread through the estate, and servants quietly stepped aside as she entered the grand entrance hall with Bryan holding one hand and Charlotte in her other arm.
The familiar scent of cedarwood filled the air. She slowed for a moment, taking in the hall she had known so well. The paintings were still in their places, and the flower arrangements looked almost exactly as she remembered them. Nothing seemed to have changed, and for a moment, it felt as though she had only been away for a short while.
A butler hurried forward and bowed. "Your Highness..."
Emma offered him a small smile. "Is Brandon home?"
The elderly butler nodded. "My Alpha is in his chamber."
"Thank you."
She started forward, but her heart had already begun to pound. Bryan tugged gently on her hand and looked up at her.
"Can we surprise Father?"
She looked down at him, and a small smile touched her lips. "I think he’d like that."
Bryan grinned mischievously, and Charlotte immediately copied him.
"Surprise!"
Emma couldn’t help smiling as they continued down the familiar corridor. Every step brought another memory to the surface: late-moon conversations, shared laughter, quiet moonrises, and the life they had built together before everything fell apart.
When they reached the high-tech chamber door, she stopped. For a long moment, she simply stared at it, her fingers tightening slightly around the pups’ hands.
Bryan squeezed her hand.
"It’s okay, Mother."
She looked down at him.
He gave her a small, reassuring smile. "We’re here."
She nodded, took a slow breath, and raised her hand. Her fingers hovered over the scanner for a moment before she finally placed her palm against it.
A calm voice came from inside. Brandon was on a device call, his attention focused on the screen as he stood near the large bed covered with an expensive duvet.
"I’ll be there in an hour."
She slowly opened the door.
He looked up absently, expecting his personal assistant. The moment his eyes landed on them, he froze. The device slipped from his fingers and landed softly on the bed.
For a heartbeat, neither of them moved.
His eyes shifted to Bryan, then Charlotte, before returning to Emma. He stared at her as though he wasn’t certain she was really standing there.
"Emma..."
Her name escaped his lips in little more than a whisper.
She stepped inside. Bryan and Charlotte immediately released her hands and ran toward him.
"Father!"
Brandon instinctively dropped to one knee and gathered both pups into his arms. He hugged them tightly, his eyes closing for a moment as he held them against his chest. When he finally looked up again, his gaze found Emma.
She had stopped only a few steps away.
The chamber fell quiet. Mrs. Thompson watched the three of them for a moment before gently stepping forward.
"Come along, Your Highnesses. Let your father and mother talk."
The pups protested softly, but Mrs. Thompson took each of them by the hand and led them toward the door. Bryan looked back at Brandon with a grin before disappearing into the hallway with Charlotte and Mrs Thompson.
Once the door closed behind them, Brandon stood slowly.
There were a thousand things he wanted to say, a thousand apologies and explanations he had carried with him for months, yet none of them seemed enough now that Emma was standing in front of him.
He lowered his eyes.
"I’m sorry."
She felt tears fill her eyes. He was still apologizing, even now, even after everything she had learned.
She took another step forward, then another, until only a single step separated them.
Brandon looked up at her. His eyes were already glistening.
"I never wanted..."
She closed the remaining distance before he could finish. She reached up and kissed him gently, her lips lingering against his for a moment.
He froze in surprise before his arms slowly came around her, and he returned the kiss.
"You don’t have to explain."
He fell silent, his eyes remaining on her face.
"I know."
Those two words seemed to steal the air from his lungs. His brows drew together as he stared at her, almost afraid to believe what he had heard.
"You..."
She nodded. "My father told me everything."
He closed his eyes. For one terrifying moment, he expected her to turn around and walk away, leaving him to face the same distance he had endured for so long. Instead, when he opened his eyes again, Emma was still standing before him.
She stepped closer again and wrapped her arms around him.
Tears slipped silently down her cheeks as she held him. "I’ve spent winters believing you abandoned us." Her voice trembled against his chest. "I carried so much anger. It hurts so much."
Brandon lowered his head, his arms hanging at his sides for a moment before his hands slowly settled against her back.
"I know."
"And you carried it with me."
He lifted his head, confusion crossing his face. She slowly pulled back just enough to look at him. Her hand trembled as she reached up and gently cupped his cheek, wiping away a tear with her thumb.
"You let me hate you..." Her voice broke slightly. "...because you thought it would keep us alive."
Brandon’s eyes filled again. This time, he didn’t try to hide the tears.
"They were worth it." His voice broke as he looked at her. "Every lonely days... every tear... every moment without you... If it meant you, Bryan, and Charlotte lived, I would choose it again."
She shook her head as fresh tears slipped down her cheeks.
"No," she whispered. "You shouldn’t have had to make that choice alone."
She pulled him into her arms again, holding him as tightly as she could. He stood completely still at first, his hands resting against her back as though he still couldn’t quite believe she was holding him by choice.
Then his arms slowly tightened around her.
He lowered his face against her hair and closed his eyes. He had spent months waiting for her permission to hold her again, and now that she was the one holding him, his arms slowly tightened around her.
Neither of them spoke. For once, there was nothing left that needed to be explained.
Then, slowly, Brandon’s arms rose around her. He buried his face against her shoulder, and the quiet strength he had carried for months finally gave way. A broken sob escaped his lips, and Emma immediately held him tighter, one hand moving gently over his back.
"I’ve made you wait long enough."
Brandon’s shoulders trembled against her.
"I never stopped loving you."
She closed her eyes, holding him close as tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I know."
She pulled back just enough to look at him, her hands still resting against him. "I never stopped loving you either."
He held her gaze, his eyes wet with tears. "I never stopped hoping you’d say it again."
Emma’s lips trembled into a soft smile as she reached up and gently wiped the tears from his cheek. "Then you don’t have to hope anymore."
He covered her hand with his, holding it gently against his cheek as he closed his eyes for a moment.
"I’ve missed you more than you know."
Emma’s fingers curled gently around his hand as she held his gaze.
"I’ve missed you too, Starlit. I just didn’t know how to find my way back to you."
He gently squeezed her hand, his thumb brushing over her fingers.
"You don’t have to find your way alone anymore. I’ll walk with you."
The chamber remained quiet except for their soft breathing and the occasional sound of their tears. Neither of them seemed ready to let go when a burst of laughter drifted in from the hallway.
They both turned toward the door as Bryan’s excited voice carried through the chamber.
"I told you!"
Charlotte’s happy voice followed.
"We’re home!"
Brandon looked back at Emma, his hands still resting gently at her waist. He pulled back just enough to meet her eyes, and the hope and relief in his expression made her smile through her tears.
"Does this mean...?"
Emma nodded, her smile growing.
"We’re home."
A laugh escaped Brandon, mixed with another broken breath as he wiped at his eyes. He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead before resting his forehead against hers.
For the first time in what felt like a lifetime, neither of them had to wonder where they belonged.
They were finally finding their way back to each other.
And this time, neither of them would have to walk that road alone.
