After exchanging a few simple pleasantries, Moira found herself at a loss for words.

After all, she had no experience dealing with elders in this life or her last. She had plenty of experience dealing with clients, though.

"Mr. Rhodes, why are you here by yourself? Where is Shane?"

As she spoke, Moira began to scan the room for Shane. ’What’s with this guy,’ she thought, ’leaving his own grandfather alone in the living room?’

Speak of the devil.

The words had barely left Moira’s mouth when Shane pushed the door open and walked in, carrying a black safe.

A scan with her spiritual power told Moira the safe was filled with all sorts of valuables.

Their eyes met.

Moira blinked, her eyes asking, ’What are you doing?’

Shane blinked back. ’You’ll see in a minute.’

He then turned to his grandfather, hurrying over. "Grandpa, why are you up? Didn’t I tell you to wait on the sofa?"

Hearing this, Elder Rhodes shot Shane a glare. "What, do you charge for walking in here? Can’t a man stretch his legs?"

"What are you talking about? Stroll all you want, however you want. Happy now?"

Watching Shane set down the safe and help the old man settle onto the sofa, Moira suddenly felt awkward and out of place.

’Maybe I should leave.’

"Well, I have things to do. I’ll let you two talk."

Before Shane could say a word, Moira was already out the door.

On her way out, she saw Kai York and Hugh Finch, each carrying something, followed by a long line of people all heading in her direction.

’What’s going on today?’ Moira wondered. ’Did all three of them get kicked out of their homes or something?’

Ignoring them, Moira continued to walk briskly toward the exit. A few minutes earlier, the Golden Celestial Eye she had sent out had discovered something interesting, and she wanted to go check it out.

Walking through the base.

Compared to the era of extreme heat, when everyone’s face was etched with exhaustion and numbness, people’s expressions were now much more varied.

Even with the insect plague raging outside, they had insecticide water. Wherever there were bugs, they sprayed.

Now, nearly every household kept a supply of insecticide water. Fighter jets flew overhead at regular intervals, spraying the entire base in a 360-degree, comprehensive sweep.

Thanks to everyone’s efforts, ninety-nine percent of the insects inside the base had been eliminated. The remaining one percent posed no real threat to daily life.

As she passed the trading market, she saw all sorts of strange goods for sale. Besides some pre-apocalyptic luxury items, old clothes, and books, the most common items were various kinds of edible insects.

Most of these were larvae, still in their early stages of development. Adult insects mostly had a hard exoskeleton and didn’t have much nutritional value, but the larvae were a different story.

However, the things Moira feared most were the legless creatures that wriggled nonstop. The very sight of them made her skin crawl.

Photos or videos were fine, but she couldn’t stand seeing the living creatures in person.

’Yep,’ she thought, ’I definitely overestimated myself.’

Moira couldn’t help but quicken her pace, hurrying away from the area.

Along the way, Moira saw people riding bicycles and electric scooters.

The bicycles and scooters looked brand new, with logos she didn’t recognize.

The electric scooters had a heavy, metallic look, as if they could transform into robots at any moment. The bicycles were also completely different from what she was used to, resembling old-fashioned, heavy-duty models.

Since the extreme heat, most vehicles like cars, electric scooters, and bicycles had been rendered useless. Even the ones that weren’t completely broken had become extremely fragile.

With gas prices soaring, cars were now an unattainable luxury.

’Where did these bicycles and electric scooters come from?’

"Patience, what’s the deal with these bicycles and electric scooters?" Moira asked.

’What in the world happened outside while I was cooped up at home?’

[Not long ago, there was a small skirmish that resulted in two damaged Flying Devices.]

"I know about that. I even banned those people from buying from my shop again. What does that have to do with the bicycles and Flying Devices?"

Moira didn’t understand why Patience had suddenly brought this up.

[The two Flying Devices were damaged and unusable, so Cathayan scientists dismantled them. They were greatly inspired by the technology and soon launched new bicycles and solar-powered vehicles.]

’The number of Flying Devices is limited, after all,’ Moira mused. ’They wouldn’t dare take apart a functional one. Now that they have two broken ones, those scientists were probably ecstatic.’

"Are these new bicycles and solar-powered vehicles any different from the old ones?"

[Somewhat. They’re basically just more efficient and energy-saving.]

To an Intelligent Brain like Patience, the new bicycles and solar-powered vehicles were no different from children’s toys.

Outside the base’s gate, a crowd of people had gathered. Some were sitting on the ground, resting with blades of wild grass dangling from their mouths, while others were discussing something with their partners.

Without exception, every one of them looked utterly exhausted.

Beside them lay several burlap sacks, each one taller than a person. A dark brown liquid seeped from the bottoms of some.

Seeing this, Moira already had a good idea of what was inside the sacks.

The base now posted various missions daily. Anyone who completed a mission would receive food as a reward. The tasks consisted of capturing different types of insects for research.

Moira’s arrival drew a lot of attention. The reason was simple: she was too clean. She showed no sign of the weary look of someone ravaged by the apocalypse.

Moira noticed them staring but paid them no mind. With a wave of her hand, she summoned Black Wolf.

Amid the crowd’s gasps of astonishment, Moira calmly leaped onto Black Wolf’s back and swiftly departed.

The farther they traveled from the base, the more desolate the surrounding landscape became.

They occasionally spotted green plants, but a closer look revealed leaves riddled with holes from insect bites. Worse still, the stems themselves were crawling with bugs.

The sight was enough to make one’s blood run cold.

Fortunately, after leaving the base, Moira and Black Wolf had both consumed Insect-attracting Grass Seeds. Furthermore, she carried a large, full barrel of insecticide water on her back.

Moira sat on Black Wolf’s back, closed her eyes, and focused on sensing the location of her Golden Celestial Eye.

A moment later, her eyes snapped open.

"Found it!"

After about half an hour of Black Wolf running at full speed, Moira finally reached her destination.
