Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging

Chapter 257: Eleanor Vaughn’s Request for Help

Just as Moira Lynch was starting to recover, Patience’s voice suddenly rang out.

[You have a new message waiting. Sender: Eleanor Vaughn.]

"Eleanor Vaughn?"

It took her a moment, but Moira Lynch remembered who Eleanor Vaughn was—the blue elf girl she had met during the competition in The Aelmar Sea.

’A thought suddenly struck Moira. When she met the Flower Sprite, Patience had said that the Elven Race was warlike. But back when she met Eleanor Vaughn, it had said they were a peace-loving race. What’s the deal with that?’

Patience explained,

[The Elven Race is diverse. Most elves are arrogant and quite warlike, but some are peaceful and benevolent toward others.]

"I see."

Moira Lynch opened her Intelligent Brain to read the message.

’This was their first real conversation since they’d exchanged contact information.’

When she opened the message, Moira saw that Eleanor Vaughn had sent her a whole essay.

Moira started reading from the top.

In the message, Eleanor Vaughn started by apologizing for the sudden intrusion, then explained why she was reaching out.

Apparently, while looking at Moira’s profile, Eleanor had discovered she was a Recycler. Not only that, but everyone who had hired her had given her the highest possible rating.

Many had even commented that her abilities were on par with an S-rank Recycler.

Reading this, Moira asked, "Patience, did you update my profile for me?"

[Yes. It is part of my duties. But rest assured, I was discreet.]

Moira hummed in acknowledgment and went back to reading.

’Eleanor must want her to help recycle something, but what could it be?’

Eleanor Vaughn lived on a small planet governed by the Elven Race.

Since Eleanor’s race wasn’t skilled in combat, their primary role was to cultivate crops and process them into various foods.

"’Not skilled in combat... The Flower Sprites aren’t either, so why were they the only ones exiled?’ Moira wondered aloud."

[Eleanor Vaughn’s race is the Sea Sprite. By nature, they are gentle and not fond of fighting, but that does not mean they are weak in combat.]

’The implication was that Sea Sprites were unwilling to fight due to their temperament, not because they were weak. The Flower Sprites, on the other hand, were just plain feeble.’

Moira read on.

This year’s harvest had been exceptionally good, so they had decided to increase production.

However, something had gone wrong, leading to a problem with the Elf Syrup. Now they had a surplus and were hoping Moira could come and help them handle it.

The pay, of course, would be generous.

Eleanor Vaughn was offering three Elf Tree Leaves as payment.

Just as Moira was hesitating about whether to accept the job—and how she would even get there if she did—the System’s voice suddenly sounded in her ear.

[Connection with the Elven Race detected. Special Dungeon triggered: Elf and Sugar. You will automatically enter this dungeon for your next instance.]

’Well, that settles it. Half a month... Eleanor can probably wait that long.’

Moira tapped out a reply, telling Eleanor she could do it but would need some time.

A reply came back almost instantly, saying they understood.

After closing the chat window, Moira grew curious about what exactly Elf Syrup was.

"Patience."

[Elf Syrup: A type of syrup produced by the Elven Race. It has a light, sweet, fruity flavor that is not cloying. It is an indispensable food source for elves.

PS: Liquid Elf Syrup is extremely sticky. Once it gets on you, it is very difficult to remove. Please take protective measures when handling unsolidified Elf Syrup. Be especially careful of your hair.]

"So, Elf Syrup is a good thing. If it’s a good thing, then isn’t more of it better?"

’But from Eleanor’s tone, it didn’t sound like a good thing at all.’

[Because the aroma of Elf Syrup attracts a creature called a Red-Nose. They are extremely fond of sugar, and as long as they have it to eat, they will grow to an enormous size and destroy the elves’ habitat.]

"I see. Then what are Elf Tree Leaves?"

[Elf Tree Leaves: Grants a person a second chance. If one is dissatisfied with their awakened talent, consuming an Elf Tree Leaf provides an opportunity to start over. There is also an extremely small chance of triggering a secondary awakening.

PS: A person can only consume Elf Tree Leaves three times in their lifetime.]

’Moira was very satisfied with her own talent and had no desire to change it, so the Elf Tree Leaves were of no use to her.’

’However, putting them in the Pharmacy Box might produce some unexpected results.’

She knew that plenty of people on Caelus had talents that were either completely useless or came with significant side effects.

If a medicine that could alter one’s talent were to become available, she was sure many people would pay a high price for it.

And then there was the Elf Syrup.

’The elves’ combat power was off the charts, and they were all slender-waisted and long-legged. The food they liked to eat had to be something special, too.’

At this thought, Moira was already looking forward to the next game.

Meanwhile, in the System Space, a ball of light watched the balance in its account climb, and it rolled around in excitement.

’It had recently taken a fancy to a new cosmetic skin, but the price was a little steep, and it had been reluctant to buy it. Now, with this extra income, it could finally get the skin without a second thought.’

’No, wait, maybe it could even buy a few more.’

It looked around at the surrounding System Space.

An expression of disgust appeared on the Game System’s face.

’It was all blue, composed of all sorts of incomprehensible data. So ugly.’

’After buying the skin, there should be some money left over. Just enough to decorate the System Space. And that lottery mechanism needed a proper upgrade, too. It was always breaking down and was completely useless.’

’SoySauceDrunkard really was its lucky star. Good thing it hadn’t let that survival system get its way back then.’

Just as the Game System was bouncing around happily in the System Space, two pop-up windows suddenly appeared before it.

One of them was for the Isle of Elves, where Eleanor Vaughn was located.

The Game System materialized a small claw. "Let’s go with this one. The other one isn’t urgent; it can wait until the game after next."

After a day of fierce competition and waiting, the auction had finally reached its last five minutes.

Everyone knew this was the most critical moment.

If they messed up now, all their previous efforts would be for nothing.

Therefore, Timothy Murphy and Chase Shepard had called in a few more people to stand guard in front of the auction displays for the mining veins they wanted.

The moment the price changed, they would immediately input a higher bid.

Fortunately, the veins they had chosen weren’t very large, so their competition mostly consisted of smaller nations. The major powers were all busy bidding on entire planets and the largest mining veins.

’And how could those small nations possibly be a match for Cathaya?’

As the seconds ticked by, everyone’s hearts pounded in their chests, their eyes glued to the screen without blinking.
