If they hadn’t just checked Leah Lowell and confirmed she hadn’t been parasitized by a Xenomorph, they would have suspected anyone else saying such things was part of a new Xenomorph ploy.

They listened as Perry Yates recounted the entire story of her escape from the Xenomorph’s Hive. Of course, she was vague about her own origins.

As natives who had been fighting the Xenomorphs for three years, Elara Lynch and the others could tell from the description alone that Perry Yates had likely been captured to serve as a host for a Phase-bug larva.

The first half of her story was normal enough, but when they heard that Perry Yates had cooked and eaten an Insect Egg, the expressions on their faces turned strange.

’Seriously, who in the world would ever think of eating something like an Insect Egg? Wouldn’t that be disgusting?’

At this thought, Elara Lynch and the others looked over at Perry Yates, their expressions a mixture of disbelief and bewilderment.

"Girl, you have... unique tastes."

"I just figured, since I was going to die anyway, I might as well not die hungry." Perry Yates spread her hands and shrugged.

No one doubted her explanation. After all, in that situation, her chances of survival had been practically zero. It wasn’t strange for people to do crazy things when faced with certain death.

"And then? How did you get out?"

"After I ate the Insect Egg, I was just waiting to die. But then a rope ladder suddenly appeared above my head. I realized I could somehow understand the Xenomorphs. One was urging me to climb up. By then, I’d already accepted my fate, so I figured I might as well go out and see what was happening."

"And you know what happened next. The Xenomorphs didn’t realize anything was off about me, and I just strolled right out of there."

After hearing Perry Yates’s story, Elara Lynch and the others became extremely excited.

"Let’s go. We’re heading back to the base right now."

With that, Elara Lynch grabbed Perry Yates and started running toward their vehicle.

"Wait, I have my own car. Besides, aren’t you going to look for The Hive anymore?"

Hearing this, Elara Lynch paused for a moment. "Grant will drive your car back," she said. "From now on, you’re with me. As for The Hive... you’ve already given us its location, haven’t you?"

Perry Yates was led to a green vehicle.

She hadn’t looked closely before and had assumed the green was just camouflage paint. Now she saw that it was indeed camouflage, just not the kind she had imagined.

The vehicle’s surface was coated in a thick layer of pulped grass.

And it wasn’t just any ordinary grass pulp.

Ever heard of cow-rumen hotpot? Though Perry Yates had never eaten it, she had seen it before. This grass pulp looked exactly like the semi-digested grass taken from a cow’s stomach.

The smell was potent, too.

Seeing Perry Yates’s reaction, Elara Lynch knew she wasn’t used to the odor and explained, "This isn’t ordinary grass pulp. It’s a mixture of several herbs, blended and fermented. It stinks, I know, but the Xenomorphs hate the smell, so they won’t come near."

"Speaking of which, Xiao Zhang seemed to hate this smell, too. We didn’t think much of it at the time, but now that I think about it, she must have already been parasitized back then."

Xiao Zhang was the unlucky one whose stomach had just been torn open by the Xenomorph.

Eager to return to the base, they drove at high speed.

After seven or eight hours of continuous driving, the night had given way to day.

Looking up at the clear sky, Perry Yates was struck by a feeling of unreality.

Soon, a massive wall appeared in her line of sight. Perry Yates guessed this must be the sanctuary the Xenomorphs had mentioned, the base Elara Lynch had spoken of.

’It seems a bit small, though.’

The base before her was very different from what Perry Yates had imagined.

There were sturdy walls, with armed guards patrolling on top, but from her perspective, the base seemed a little too small.

Yet, just yesterday, she had learned from Elara Lynch that their base was one of the largest there was.

After their vehicle drove into the base, what greeted her was not bustling streets and simple houses, but a vast, empty basin.

All around, what looked like incandescent tubes, magnified countless times, appeared before her. They covered the entire basin, reflecting a blinding white light under the sun.

Elara Lynch skillfully took out a pair of sunglasses for herself, then handed another pair to Perry Yates.

In truth, Perry Yates wasn’t too affected. Although the sunlight here was incredibly harsh, her contact lenses were a four-star item, after all.

Nevertheless, she accepted the sunglasses and put them on.

In that brief moment, however, she had already deduced the purpose of these giant tubes.

’They must function something like solar panels.’

Looking around, she saw that the only structure besides the wall was, surprisingly, a sunshade in the distance.

The vehicle drove under the sunshade. To enter the base proper, they still needed to complete one final inspection.

They had been alone on the road since they started. Perry Yates had naturally assumed the other teams either hadn’t returned yet or were all inside the base.

However, after they parked the car, everyone gathered in an empty area at the far end of the sunshade.

With the sound of machinery starting up, the ground began to vibrate slightly, and Perry Yates’s line of sight began to drop.

A few moments later, they had been transported to another location.

Unlike the desolation from before, this place was bustling and packed with people. A massive line snaked through the area.

Perry Yates learned from Elara Lynch that this was the real base; what she had seen before was merely an energy collection point.

The line moved forward steadily, and after about twenty minutes, it was finally their turn.

Because Perry Yates was new, she required a separate screening.

She was led into an empty room surrounded by cameras that covered every possible angle.

Perry Yates could sense that on the other side of the cameras, someone was observing her.

Suddenly, a man’s voice came from the cameras, ordering Perry Yates to remove the mask from her face.

Hearing the command, Perry Yates complied without protest, taking off the mask to reveal a sallow face with freckles on both cheeks.

She had already put on makeup before this. It wasn’t ordinary cosmetics, of course, but prop makeup created through Ascension. It was truly waterproof, smudge-proof, long-lasting, and wouldn’t cake.

Next, she followed the voice’s instructions, performing a few simple actions like raising her hands and lifting her legs.

As she did so, she could feel something scanning her body.

After a few minutes, the voice from the cameras spoke again. "Non-infected. Confirmed safe. Welcome to Base Three."
