Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 137: Island Royale 6After copying Retrospect, Perry Yates then copied Veronica Beckett’s cards.
Based on her experience, players who could become Croupiers were no ordinary players. They were the cream of the crop, and they all shared one thing in common: immense power.
For example, the Retrospect Talent she had just copied was actually an SS-rank Talent.
While it couldn’t compare to her own high Ascension Level, it was still unprecedented.
After copying all of Veronica Beckett’s fused cards, the results were just as she had expected.
Every single one of the cards she had fused was three-star or higher.
’As for items...’ Perry Yates thought for a moment, then decided against it. She wasn’t short on items, after all.
After gathering some wild fruit, the two checked the time. Thinking it was getting late, they started heading back.
Just then, Veronica Beckett suddenly let out a cry of surprise.
Perry Yates, however, wasn’t distracted by her cry. Her eyes were fixed on a bundle of green waterproof tarp hanging from a branch on a tree about two meters in front of her.
The tarp was tied securely and didn’t look like it had ever been opened. It appeared to be brand new.
Seeing the tarp, Perry Yates suddenly had a thought. ’Could this have been prepared for the non-Dealer Players?’
The more she thought about it, the more likely it seemed. After confirming no one else was around, Perry Yates quickly climbed the tree and stashed the bundle of tarp in her storage space.
’Now that I’ve found it, I can’t just leave it for the other players.’
Having done this, Perry Yates finally turned to see what Veronica Beckett was up to.
Veronica Beckett had heard the commotion Perry Yates had just made but paid it no mind, as her attention was completely focused on something else.
Who would have thought they would find ginseng on this deserted island surrounded by the sea?
Perry Yates recognized ginseng, but that was the extent of her knowledge. Seeing how carefully Veronica Beckett was digging, she stood to the side so as not to disturb her.
Digging up ginseng is a painstaking and slow process, so the pair, who had been ready to head back, ended up staying there for several hours.
Everyone had already woken up late because of the Sleeping Cloud Mist. Adding the hours spent waiting here, by the time Veronica Beckett had unearthed the entire ginseng plant, the sky was already growing dark.
Just as the two were preparing to head back, they ran into people who were out looking for them.
"We finally found you!"
The ones who came looking for them were a middle-aged couple. The woman was named Rosemary Archer, and the man was Morgan Abbott.
Perry Yates had a very deep impression of this pair.
It wasn’t because they had done anything offensive. Quite the opposite, in fact. They were well-spoken and gentle in their interactions with others. At a glance, you could tell they were high-society figures accustomed to positions of power.
The reason they left such a deep impression on Perry Yates was that since yesterday, they had been constantly approaching other players, including Perry herself.
It was probably because Perry Yates looked so young, the very picture of a naive and simple-minded girl, that the couple first approached her with expressions of concern.
Rosemary Archer had a naturally disarming appearance, and when paired with her subtle, nurturing concern, it would have been easy for her to gain the trust of a truly inexperienced young girl.
When they felt the time was right, Rosemary Archer and Morgan Abbott suggested they clear the game together with Perry Yates, arguing that the three of them helping each other would be much safer than her going it alone.
Although the pair showed no outward signs of anything unusual during their conversation, Perry Yates still sensed something was off.
’They’re being a little too friendly. It doesn’t feel right.’
Not only was Perry Yates a Dealer Player and thus not on their side to begin with, but even if she had been a non-Dealer Player, she still wouldn’t have agreed.
After she politely declined, the couple’s expressions didn’t change, but Perry’s sharp eyes caught the fleeting look of displeasure and malice that flashed in their eyes.
"Mrs. Archer, Abbott, what brings you two out looking for us?" Perry Yates asked with a smile.
"Well, you two were gone for so long without coming back, we got worried and came to find you. Did something hold you up? Why aren’t you back yet at this hour?"
Morgan Abbott said, his tone laced with a hint of reproach, like a gentle elder concerned about an impetuous youngster.
"That’s right, Perry, Veronica. You two were gone for so long. Your Uncle Abbott and I were worried sick," Rosemary Archer chimed in.
’I don’t believe a single word of that.’
But, believe it or not, she still had to play her part.
So, Perry Yates put on an annoyed expression, glanced sideways at Veronica Beckett, and said, "It’s all her fault."
Hearing this, Veronica Beckett played along and nodded. "It’s true, it’s my fault. I found a ginseng plant, so we were delayed for a bit."
Hearing the word "ginseng," Rosemary Archer finally noticed what was in Veronica Beckett’s hand: a ginseng plant that was top-quality in both size and appearance.
The couple were worldly people and knew that a ginseng of this quality wasn’t just expensive—it was practically priceless. A flicker of greed flashed in their eyes, but they concealed it well.
"Oh, so that’s what happened. You two girls are certainly lucky," Rosemary Archer said with a laugh, but as her gaze fell on Veronica Beckett, her smile didn’t reach her eyes.
After the group returned to their original campsite, Perry Yates noticed the atmosphere was tense. Everyone was frowning, as if something had happened.
Upon seeing Perry Yates and Veronica Beckett return safely, the crowd’s eyes held a mix of relief, surprise, and confusion.
Seeing this, Perry Yates split from Veronica Beckett and approached a player who seemed relatively approachable to ask what had happened.
The player hesitated before saying, "We’re ten people short."
The number of missing had been twelve, but since Perry Yates and Veronica Beckett had returned, the count was now ten.
Hearing this, Perry Yates finally understood why the atmosphere in the camp was so heavy.
She glanced around and saw that the other two Dealer Players hadn’t left. This meant the ten missing players had either left on their own or were already dead.
And from the looks of things, the latter seemed far more likely.
Where there was bad news, there was also good news.
The good news was that although they hadn’t found any Dealer Players on their trip out, they had found a considerable amount of supplies.
Compared to the string of bad news over the last two days, this was a huge relief.
At least they now had tents and would no longer have to sleep out in the elements.
