Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 147: Island Royale 16The fleeing figure was sliced clean in two, and splattering blood stained the surrounding plants red.
CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.
The sound of applause came from nearby. Amber Sheridan was watching Perry Yates with a look of admiration.
’I originally thought she was just some rookie looking to ride our coattails, but I never expected her to surprise us time and time again.’
Perry Yates recalled her poker cards and walked over to the Hunter that had been sliced in two.
This Hunter was different from the others she’d seen. While it still had long limbs, both its limbs and torso were much more robust. It looked like a massive gorilla covered from head to toe in scales.
"Master Ford, looks like we need to speed things up. Some Hunters have already evolved to the second stage," Amber Sheridan said to Evan Fuller, glancing at the corpse on the ground.
Just then, Perry Yates raised her hand and asked curiously, "What’s the second stage?"
’Just how much was there about this game that she didn’t know?’
Amber Sheridan explained, "The second stage is a term we came up with.
The first stage is a newly hatched Hunter. You’ve probably seen them—they’re grayish-white all over, very fragile, and that stage lasts for about two to three hours. In the second stage, a Hunter will randomly develop the characteristics of a certain animal. This stage lasts for three to four days.
By this stage, the Hunters have already developed a certain level of intelligence. They no longer just hunt relentlessly; they’ve learned how to hide and evade.
Finally, there’s the third stage, which is also the most dangerous. The Hunter will gain an ability—one specifically designed to counter us Croupiers.
When it really comes to that, it’s just a matter of who has more trump cards to play."
After hearing Amber Sheridan’s explanation, Perry Yates’s eyes were wide with shock, and it took her a long moment to process it all.
「Day five of the game.」
After dawn, the trio stopped traveling and returned to the other side of the mountain.
Perry Yates took the ingredients from Amber Sheridan and whipped up a simple breakfast. After the three of them ate, it was time for free activity.
"Free activity?" Perry Yates looked at Amber Sheridan in confusion.
Amber Sheridan, however, looked as if this was the most natural thing in the world. "Yeah, free activity. It’s only day five. We still have over twenty days to go. We should rest and conserve our strength, or use this period of relative calm to gather some good loot."
Perry Yates could read between the lines; the days ahead were only going to get more chaotic.
’Oh well,’ she thought. ’I’m used to it by now anyway.’
Besides, it was a good opportunity for her to explore the area and gather some ingredients.
As Perry Yates turned to leave, Amber Sheridan called after her, "Don’t forget to be back by noon to cook! And if anyone gives you trouble, you come find me and Master Ford. We’ll take care of it for you."
Perry Yates didn’t say anything, simply waving a hand over her shoulder to show she’d heard.
Perry Yates hadn’t gotten far before a pair of sharp, hungry eyes locked onto her.
Feeling the warmth radiating from her wrist, Perry Yates knew she must have entered a predator’s territory.
Just then, a tiger’s head emerged from the tall grass nearby. Its eyes were fixed on her, and a low growl rumbled in its throat.
Although Perry Yates’s current power level far exceeded that of a tiger, more than twenty years of ingrained instinct kicked in. She subconsciously took two steps back in the face of the ferocious beast, her heart starting to pound.
The tiger seemed exceptionally intelligent. It must have sensed the fear in Perry Yates’s eyes, because it let out another roar, attempting to break her nerve.
By now, however, Perry Yates had regained her composure. As the massive tiger lunged at her, she instantly manipulated vines to bind its body tightly.
Soon, the tiger was completely immobilized. She then aimed her Spiritual Ability Gun at the helpless creature and delivered the final blow.
’Why go through all that trouble instead of just killing it outright? For a perfect tiger pelt, of course.’
After dealing with the tiger, she found that, as expected, it hadn’t dropped any cards. Perry Yates wasn’t disappointed. For her, cards were just icing on the cake anyway.
She stored the tiger’s body in her Space Backpack. Just as she did, Perry Yates suddenly froze, her gaze fixed on a particular direction.
A moment ago, she had received an alert from her Wood Clone: a team of non-Dealer Players had crossed the mountain and entered this area.
But that wasn’t the most critical part. The most critical part was that this group of players had a Hunter with them—and it was one that had already evolved to the second stage.
What shocked Perry Yates even more was that they all seemed to be getting along remarkably well.
’She’d never imagined that players could actually cooperate with Hunters.’
’But since it was happening, she had to figure out a way to deal with it.’
Perry Yates knew that a Hunter’s second stage only lasted a few days. She had to act quickly and eliminate that Hunter, along with all the players traveling with it.
With that thought, a white mist began to spread out from Perry Yates, rapidly expanding in the direction of the approaching group.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, a group of people were cautiously advancing, clustered around a monster that looked like a pangolin. It was covered in black scales and had blood-red eyes.
"Snow, if there are any Croupiers nearby, you have to warn us. Whether or not we make it out of here alive is all up to you."
A handsome young man in the group said to the pangolin-like creature.
At his words, the pangolin blinked and slowly nodded. A harsh, grating sound, like a dry cough, emanated from its throat. It was a terrifying, chilling noise.
Seeing this, a flash of disgust crossed the young man’s eyes, but he hid it well. He smiled and said softly, "Don’t worry, Snow. As long as you help us beat this game, I promise that after we get out of here, I’ll have the system turn you back into your original self."
This time, a flicker of what looked like gratitude appeared in the pangolin’s eyes. The rasping sound came from its throat again, but it was much quieter than before.
The pangolin seemed to be trying its best to look cute and endearing, but it failed spectacularly.
Just then, a thin layer of mist suddenly materialized around them.
"I’m so sleepy!"
After breathing in the mist, one of the girls immediately grew drowsy. A second later, her body went limp and she collapsed to the ground, fast asleep.
At the same time, the pangolin snapped into a combat stance. Its eyes locked onto a specific direction as sharp claws shot out from its hands.
