Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 198: Cave Survival 8As one of the first players, he had rejected the Survival Game Administration’s recruitment offer, merely maintaining a cooperative relationship with them.
Before Perry Yates appeared, Alan Usher was the legend on every player’s lips—a truly god-tier figure.
But, as the saying goes, fame courts trouble. Because he was so famous, many of his details—like his Talent and the cards he had integrated—were all exposed by malicious parties.
After that, Alan Usher became extremely low-profile and never appeared in public again.
However, thinking of Alan Usher reminded Perry Yates of something else.
Around the time The Card Tavern was just starting to make a name for itself, Alan Usher had sent someone to find her with a strange request.
He wanted to commission a custom item.
With so much of his personal information leaked, he had become an easy target for other players, so he wanted to change the attributes of his cards.
This was something other players couldn’t even dream of. But as one of the first players, Alan Usher seemed to know some kind of game secret. The attributes of his integrated cards could be changed; he just needed the right item.
But because Alan Usher had integrated many high-level cards, he had never found a suitable item. The appearance of The Card Tavern gave him hope.
At this thought, Perry Yates slowly descended. She offered Alan Usher a gentle smile of her own and said, "My name is Perry Yates."
The cloud beneath her feet dissipated, but it didn’t vanish completely.
As one of the first players to make it out of the survival games alive, Alan Usher was no saint. So, it was best for them to stay out of each other’s way.
Alan Usher seemed to sense Perry Yates’s thoughts. Coincidentally, he felt the same way.
And so, the following scene unfolded inside the cave.
Alan Usher leaned against a wall of ice with his eyes closed, resting. His long, slender legs were particularly eye-catching.
Meanwhile, Perry Yates positioned herself as far from Alan Usher as possible.
Watching him sit directly on the ice, she couldn’t help but purse her lips. ’I wouldn’t dare do that. The ground’s too cold; I’d get a stomachache.’
Time ticked by, second by second. Perry Yates had assumed Alan Usher would leave soon, but to her surprise, he had actually fallen asleep.
Hearing his deep, steady breathing, Perry Yates had no choice but to accept the reality of the situation.
’Wait a second, isn’t he worried I might try to harm him?’
’He must be way too confident in himself.’
’By the way, what was Alan Usher’s Talent again? Oh, right, SSS-rank Danger Foreknowledge, which allows him to sense danger in advance. It’s the same rank as my Ascension Talent.’
That was exactly what had helped Alan Usher evade one danger after another in the games, ensuring his survival.
’Such a rare opportunity.’
Perry Yates immediately used a Replication Card to copy his Talent.
After copying it, however, she hesitated. Her Talent slots were already full. To integrate a new one, she would have to discard one she already had.
But she didn’t want to discard any of her current Talents, especially since this new one overlapped a bit with an ability of her bracelet.
’Forget it, I’ll just store it for now. It’s an SSS-rank Talent, after all. I could sell it for a good price. In any case, it won’t go to waste.’
What Perry Yates didn’t notice was that at the exact moment she used the Replication Card, Alan Usher, who was supposed to be asleep, opened his eyes a tiny crack. He glanced over at the distant Perry Yates, who was clearly looking pleased.
As one of the first players, he had been favored by the game system and possessed certain abilities that ordinary people lacked.
These weren’t Skills, but rather a form of intuition—a perception that surpassed that of ordinary people. For instance, he could sense a person’s emotional fluctuations and the ripples created by the use of a card. He was especially sensitive when it was directed at him.
So, this girl, Perry Yates, had just used a card on him. But his Talent hadn’t been triggered, which meant the card posed no threat to him.
’Could she be...’
At the thought of a certain possibility, Alan Usher’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
Alan Usher came from a privileged family, was exceptionally handsome, and was a top-tier individual in every respect. As one of the first players, it was only natural that his fanbase included people of all ages and genders. Many other players also deeply admired Alan Usher, some even treating him like a religion.
As a result, Alan Usher often encountered "fan offerings" in the game.
He had clearly mistaken Perry Yates for one of his fans. The card she’d used hadn’t triggered his Danger Foreknowledge Talent, likely because it wasn’t an Attack Card at all, but rather a buff card.
At this thought, the look in Alan Usher’s eyes softened. ’In that case, I can’t just accept your card for nothing. I’ll do you the favor of protecting you for a while.’
If Perry Yates knew what he was thinking right now, she would have certainly hit him with the classic triple denial: "I’m not! I didn’t! You’re spouting nonsense!"
And so, Perry Yates, who had expected him to leave after a short rest, found herself waiting until the fifth day of the game. Alan Usher still showed no intention of leaving.
After he was well-rested, he even took a chocolate-sauce-covered bread from his Space Backpack and offered it to her, telling her with a gentle look not to be polite and just eat.
The deep affection in his charming eyes once again reminded Perry Yates of that class president from her school days. ’Hmph, what an equal-opportunity charmer.’
"No, thank you. I have my own food." As she spoke, she took out an unwrapped piece of white bread to show him, proving she wasn’t lying.
At this, Alan Usher just smiled and pushed the bread into Perry Yates’s hands. "I’m giving it to you, so just take it. No need to be so formal."
Staring at the bread that had been shoved into her hand, she noticed the packaging looked a little familiar.
While Perry Yates was lost in thought, Alan Usher smoothly sat down about a meter away from her. He started asking casually, as if they were old friends, "When did you get to this cave?"
"Around the third day," Perry Yates replied honestly.
"The third day? You’ve been here for a few days then. Why haven’t you left?"
Alan Usher hadn’t expected Perry Yates to have stayed here for so long.
Hearing this, Perry Yates shrugged. "Why should I leave? It’s cool and safe here. Why would I go risk my neck somewhere else? Isn’t it perfectly fine to stay here? The whole point of a survival game is to survive, not to have an adventure. As long as I can guarantee I stay alive, that’s all that matters."
After hearing Perry Yates’s explanation, Alan Usher found himself momentarily speechless. He had to admit, she had a point.
Seeing Perry Yates’s nonchalant attitude, Alan Usher couldn’t help but feel a spark of interest in her.
