Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 199: Cave Survival 9"Hey, aren’t you leaving?"
Seeing that Alan Usher showed no intention of leaving, Perry Yates couldn’t help but try to hurry him along.
’With him here, I can’t just take out my good stuff in the open.’
Hearing the dismissive tone in Perry Yates’s voice, Alan Usher was momentarily stunned, a flicker of bewilderment in his eyes.
At this point, no matter how narcissistic he was, he had to admit the girl before him was probably not one of his admirers.
’If that’s the case, then what was that card all about?’
At this thought, a sharp glint flashed in Alan Usher’s eyes.
Perry Yates keenly sensed that something was off. She immediately grew vigilant, and the bracelet on her wrist began to grow warm.
’I don’t get it. Why does Alan Usher, who was so friendly just a moment ago, suddenly feel dangerous?’
Before she could figure it out, a blurry afterimage shot toward her.
Perry Yates’s body reacted faster than her brain; she used Instant Teleportation to dodge the attack.
"What are you doing!"
Countless thoughts raced through Perry Yates’s mind. ’Has my identity as a Croupier been exposed?’
The area was covered in ice, making it difficult for plants to grow. Plus, with her current cover, she couldn’t use many of her high-level item cards. All she could do was aim her Spiritual Ability Gun at Alan Usher.
Although the Spiritual Ability Gun was a four-star item, Alan Usher was a first-wave player and had integrated a vast number of cards.
He had even sought her help before to change a card’s attributes.
If anyone in this world understood Alan Usher besides himself, it was Perry Yates.
Seeing Perry Yates dodge his attack, Alan Usher’s lips curved into a sly smile. His tone remained gentle. "Little miss, why are you running?"
As he spoke, Alan Usher activated several more Skills in an attempt to capture Perry Yates, but she evaded every one using Instant Teleportation.
However, this wasn’t a sustainable solution. The number of times she could use Instant Teleportation was limited. On top of that, their movements were clearly causing the surrounding ice and snow to melt much faster.
"You’re chasing me, so of course I’m going to run. And don’t call me ’little miss.’ It sounds creepy."
Perry Yates stared intently at Alan Usher, her eyes full of caution.
"I won’t chase you if you don’t run. Besides, you have the perfect look of a guilty conscience. So, tell me, what did you do to me before?"
As he spoke, a hint of killing intent crept into his tone.
He hadn’t intended to kill her. He knew it was safe because his Talent for foreknowledge of danger hadn’t been triggered.
Therefore, he knew this person had done *something* to him, but whatever it was, it wasn’t dangerous.
Hearing Alan Usher’s question, Perry Yates breathed an inward sigh of relief.
’So he just noticed the Replication Card. I was worried he’d figured out I’m a Croupier.’
"It was just a probing Skill," Perry Yates said defensively. "You appeared out of nowhere. What’s wrong with me using a probing Skill on you?"
Hearing this, Alan Usher lowered his gaze, feeling a little guilty himself. But he didn’t completely believe her; the energy fluctuation from the Skill felt different from what he had sensed before.
Just then, the sound of dripping, melting water reached their ears. DRIP. DRIP.
Perry Yates looked up. The cave, once filled with ice and snow, was now almost completely melted, with the last remnants disappearing at a visible rate.
The ice and snow underfoot had melted as well, turning the ground to mud. And...
Perry Yates stomped her foot a couple of times and was horrified to find the ground beneath her had gone soft.
Worse, as the ground thawed, the surrounding walls began to warp.
"This is bad! The place is collapsing! We have to get out of here, now!"
Alan Usher reacted instantly. A layer of energy coated his hands, and he began digging furiously.
But digging with his bare hands was slow and only made the walls collapse faster.
Seeing this, Perry Yates went over, pulled out a tool, and broke through the wall in a few swift motions.
The cave behind them was at its breaking point. Without even getting a clear look at what was on the other side, they both leaped through the opening.
As they landed in the new cave, they were met with a blast of scorching air.
Perry Yates felt as if her face had been splashed with boiling water, the chill instantly vanishing from her body.
Using the lamp on her head, Perry Yates began to survey her surroundings, trying to figure out what kind of cave this was.
’Based on my experience, it shouldn’t be this hot.’
’Could it be my reaction is so strong just because the last cave was so cold?’
’But the temperature in that cave was already rising when we escaped.’
Perry Yates subconsciously glanced at the thermometer on her belt. She hadn’t paid it any mind, but one look made her jump. Good lord, thirty-eight degrees Celsius. How could it be so hot?
Just then, Alan Usher noticed her movement and glanced at the thermometer on her belt.
"Be careful, the temperature here is abnormally high. There might be other creatures living here."
Hearing this, Perry Yates pouted. ’I could have figured that out without your help,’ she thought.
’Besides, whose fault was it that she was in this mess?’
’It was his fault for starting that pointless game of cat and mouse. If not for him, she’d still be relaxing comfortably in the last cave.’
’Her plan had been to lie low in that cave until the late game.’
Alan Usher didn’t sense Perry Yates’s resentment. He was completely focused on guarding against dangers in their surroundings—and a potential backstab from Perry Yates herself.
If Perry Yates knew that Alan Usher had not only ruined her chance to coast to an easy win but was also constantly worried about her backstabbing him, she would’ve been tempted to show him what a real, impossible-to-defend-against backstab looked like.
But alas, she was completely unaware.
Just then, Perry Yates’s light fell on the upper-left corner of the cavern. A rock was wedged there, and on that rock, she found a... rather provocatively-posed lizard.
The lizard was about twenty centimeters long, its body covered in shimmering, orange-red scales. It stood on its hind legs, twisting its hips, its big eyes staring right at them as it occasionally licked its lips.
She’d seen lizards on nature shows before, but a normal lizard definitely couldn’t strike such a flirtatious pose.
Perry Yates could have sworn the lizard was even making eyes at her.
She had just scanned every corner of the cave and found nothing but this orange-red lizard.
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
This was no ordinary lizard.
