"Find its roots."

Alan Usher had lost more blood than Perry Yates, but he quickly regained his composure.

Perry Yates, of course, knew the weakness of plants, so she started searching without needing to be told.

However, the area was covered in the plant’s vines, making it difficult to find the roots. On top of that, they still had to fend off its attacks.

Perry Yates swiftly dodged an attack. With a flick of her dagger, a cold light flashed, and the vine was severed.

One piece fell motionless to the ground, while the other quickly recoiled.

Cutting the vines stopped its attacks, but only temporarily. It would soon be back for more.

Perry even suspected the plant had some kind of rapid regeneration ability.

They were making no progress finding the plant’s roots, but fortunately, Perry Yates had other methods.

She had previously spawned numerous Thorny Rose and Dodder Seed vines, setting them upon the plant to constrict and consume it. Her efforts were now beginning to show results.

Just as Perry was about to press her advantage, she saw Alan Usher menacingly preparing to attack a patch of plants in the corner.

"Stop!"

Seeing this, Perry quickly stopped him and explained, "That patch of plants is mine! I spawned them, and they’re fighting the plant here."

Her Thorny Rose and Dodder Seed had fought tooth and nail to carve a path through the enemy’s iron-clad defenses. Alan Usher’s attack had nearly undone all her hard work.

An hour later, through the combined efforts of Perry Yates, Alan Usher, and the Thorny Rose and Dodder Seed vines, they finally defeated the plant.

Looking at the now-dead plant, Perry bent down and picked up a piece of vine.

Judging by the cut, she must have been the one who’d severed it with her dagger.

The cross-section of a normal plant would be green, but this one was white, encased in a thin green skin.

The white substance inside wasn’t wood. Its texture was soft and yielding, more like jelly.

’Identification!’

[White Ginseng Marrow: Jelly-like in texture and rich in nutrients. It is the single most popular food in the world of Cave Survival.]

’It’s edible!’

Perry’s eyes lit up when she read the description. She never imagined that this blood-sucking plant was actually edible—and according to the intro, incredibly nutritious.

From Perry’s experience, if a food was already nutritious to begin with, the energy it provided after Ascension would be even greater.

With that thought, Perry immediately started stuffing the pieces of the plant from the ground into her Space Backpack.

Alan Usher, who was standing nearby, didn’t try to compete with her for it. After all, from his perspective, it was just a plant. It was useless to him, as he didn’t have any Wood Attribute cards.

After clearing out all the pieces of the plant, Perry didn’t even spare the roots.

’It might not be edible, but I can burn it for firewood.’

The two of them didn’t leave immediately after dealing with the plant.

Normally, given Alan Usher’s personality and his usual in-game behavior, he would be constantly exploring, acquiring resources and cards, and killing other players, only stopping to eat and rest.

But after meeting Perry Yates, Alan Usher felt he’d gone soft. He had actually learned how to slack off.

For several days, the two of them were like nine-to-five office workers. Each day, they’d dig a few caves to cool off and wouldn’t move a single step more than necessary.

「And so it went, until the twelfth day of the game.」

During this time, aside from their daily routine of digging caves, Perry and Alan would occasionally run into other players.

They didn’t kill every single player they came across.

If the others were just passing through, they would leave them in peace. But if they showed any ill intent, they’d make sure those players never left.

Following this code of conduct, Perry Yates and Alan Usher, despite not having explored many caves, ended up with far more loot than the players who were diligently grinding away.

It seemed the fastest way to get rich in this world was through no-cost trades.

「On the thirteenth day of the game.」

That day, as Perry Yates was digging into their last cave, she suddenly had a very serious realization.

"What is it?"

After several days together, the two had grown comfortable with each other. Neither of them was particularly talkative, however, so they spent most of their time in comfortable silence, each occupied with their own tasks.

"Have you noticed? We’ve been through so many caves, but we’ve never found any food. Not even water."

If they hadn’t had their own supplies, they would have starved to death long ago.

Hearing this, Alan Usher thought for a moment before replying, "That’s not entirely true. Wasn’t there a puddle of water in one of yesterday’s caves? And what about those three fat rats in the first cave we entered? That’s all food."

Perry Yates froze, then frowned. ’How could anyone eat that stuff?’

Who knew where the water in that puddle came from? It stank. You could smell the foul odor just by getting close. And then there were those three rats.

They were real, honest-to-goodness rats, not voles. When they’d found them, the three rats had been gnawing on a player’s corpse.

Still, she knew she was speaking from a position of privilege—a classic case of survivorship bias. For other players, having any water to drink or any food to fill their stomachs would be a blessing. They couldn’t afford to be picky.

With that, Perry fell silent. She glanced down at the thermometer on her hip, which read about fifteen degrees Celsius.

It was cool enough for them to rest comfortably.

「On the fourteenth day of the game.」

When the temperature hit thirty-five degrees Celsius, the pair prepared to leave. They approached one of the walls and got ready to dig. However, the instant their tool touched the surface, the wall vanished, revealing two other people. Perry Yates and Alan Usher stared at them, and they stared back.

Immediately after, an enraged roar echoed from behind the two strangers.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the two strangers scrambled over to Perry and Alan’s side of the threshold.

In the distance, Perry could see a monster covered in white fur charging toward them.

Just as Perry resolved to abandon the breach and retreat, a powerful force suddenly struck her from behind.

Someone had shoved her hard.
