Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 208: Cave Survival 18’I have to deal with this thing in front of me first,’ she thought. ’If this goes on any longer, I’m seriously going to puke.’
With that thought, Perry Yates waved her hand. Countless vines sprouted from beneath her feet, spreading rapidly until they had completely encircled the entire writhing mass of Crimson Crawlers.
Next, dozens of Cannibal Flowers sprouted and bloomed.
This time, the Cannibal Flowers looked different, more closely resembling Venus flytraps.
The mouths of the flytraps gaped open. The surrounding vines, moving like human arms, came to life, continuously scooping up the Crimson Crawlers from the ground and tossing them into the traps to be dissolved by the digestive fluids within.
Dylan Adler’s jaw dropped in shock as he watched.
’That works too?’
"Crimson Crawlers have incredible Life Force. You have to destroy them completely, from the inside out, or they won’t die."
Dylan Adler nodded at Perry Yates’s explanation. Seeing there was nothing left for him to do, he turned to start digging in a new location.
Seeing what he was about to do, Perry Yates quickly stopped him. "Don’t go."
Dylan Adler turned, a confused frown on his face. His look seemed to ask, ’Why not?’
Perry Yates took a deep breath. "Digging more caves can wait. Let’s just focus on getting rid of all these Crimson Crawlers first."
’Otherwise, with Dylan Adler’s luck, she couldn’t be sure what horrors his next shovelful would unearth.’
It took Perry Yates until the end of the day to finish clearing out all the Crimson Crawlers. Afterward, she meticulously disinfected the ground and used air freshener to eliminate the lingering scent of their pheromones.
Only after all that was done could she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
「Day Twenty of the game.」
Given Dylan Adler’s luck, Perry Yates decided to be the one choosing where to dig this time.
Perry Yates chose three spots.
Digging open the first, they found a pile of rocks. Pinned beneath them were two one-star cards.
The second revealed a patch of grassland covered in all sorts of edible wild vegetables. Then came the third.
Compared to the first two, the third spot was empty when they dug it open, but at least it wasn’t dangerous.
Perry Yates was unfazed by the results of the three caves, but Dylan Adler, on the other hand, wore a deep frown.
After all, the outcome of these three digs was like night and day compared to his usual experiences.
Unconvinced, Dylan Adler wanted to try a few more times, but Perry Yates refused. After all, they didn’t have any more Infrastructure Space Stones to spend.
"It’d be nice if we could get a few more Infrastructure Space Stones," Perry Yates remarked offhandedly.
「Day Twenty-One of the game.」
Finally, they had reached the later stages of the game.
When Perry Yates woke up this morning, she felt a chill wind pass over her, raising goosebumps all over her skin.
"What’s going on? Did the temperature drop?"
Perry Yates glanced around and saw Dylan Adler studying the Venus flytraps. Then, she looked at the thermometer.
The temperature on the thermometer hadn’t dropped at all; in fact, it had risen by a degree. Overall, there was barely any change.
’In that case, why do I feel so cold?’
Just then, Dylan Adler walked over. "It’s Day Twenty-One of the game," he said. "If I’m not mistaken, the difficulty is set to increase again starting today. We need to be careful."
’If you want to be so careful, you could just stop digging, you know. Wouldn’t it be nice to just sit tight for once?’
Perry Yates griped internally but said nothing out loud.
After all, while Dylan Adler’s luck was abysmal, the rewards were tangible.
Aside from the portions they ate for food, Perry Yates had pocketed the rest of the beasts Dylan Adler had hunted.
「Day Twenty-Two of the game.」
Dylan Adler was getting ready to break through another wall. Perry Yates stood a short distance away, two Cannibal Flowers poised and ready behind her.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Perry Yates asked, uneasy, as Dylan prepared to strike the wall. "What’s on the other side is really dangerous."
"Danger often means high returns," Dylan Adler said.
"Fine, then."
Seeing that she couldn’t change his mind, Perry Yates took a few more steps back to ensure her own safety.
She had only just learned today that Dylan Adler’s Talent was Conservation Balance.
This Talent allowed him to gauge whether an impending event would be advantageous.
Take right now, for example.
Perry Yates looked at the wall. Every time she got near it, the bracelet on her wrist would grow hot, warning her of the danger beyond. Dylan’s Talent, however, was telling him that despite the danger, something good lay on the other side.
Once a hole was breached in the wall, Dylan Adler tried to observe the other side.
Eating Bright Mushrooms for several days had significantly improved his Night Vision.
This time, however, he saw nothing.
Just as he was frowning in thought, he suddenly heard a sound from the other side—a scraping, like metal on rock. Then, a massive golden pupil appeared in the opening.
The creature seemed to have long sensed Dylan Adler’s prying eyes. It stared straight at him, its gaze filled with a faint killing intent and utter disdain.
The sight terrified Dylan Adler, who stumbled back a few steps. By the time he composed himself, the wall had begun to tremble.
A moment later, the solid rock wall was torn apart like a sheet of paper by a massive claw.
And then.
ROAR!!
A titanic roar, the kind that could only come from a monstrous beast, exploded in their ears.
Even though Perry Yates had clamped her hands tightly over her ears, she could still feel warm liquid trickling out of them. An intense ringing overwhelmed her senses, making it nearly impossible to think. All she wanted to do was let her eyes roll back and faint.
At that moment, Perry Yates had only one thought: ’I am never trusting Dylan Adler again.’
’Some "high risk, high return"! We’re already injured before the fight even began. No matter how great the reward, I don’t want it.’
She looked back at the beast. It was a golden tiger with black stripes, but it had two heads and three tails.
Perry Yates noticed that, right between the two heads, a third was already beginning to form.
While Perry’s mind was racing, Dylan Adler had already launched an attack on the two-headed tiger.
Azure lightning struck the tiger’s body, instantly charring a patch of its golden fur black.
However, the attack clearly did little more than sting. Rather than injuring it, Dylan’s assault only served to thoroughly enrage the beast, causing it to let out another furious roar.
