Perry Yates spent a day exploring every accessible part of the cruise ship, giving her a preliminary understanding of its layout.

Aside from the bad feeling the previous waitress had given her and the fish that washed up on deck, Perry Yates hadn’t noticed anything else out of place on the ship.

That evening, Perry Yates received another invitation. The captain was hosting a masquerade ball in the second-floor banquet hall to celebrate the beginning of the first day of the voyage.

Staring at the exquisite invitation in her hand, Perry Yates couldn’t help but scoff internally. ’What is with this captain? Instead of focusing on sailing the ship, all he seems to do is throw parties day after day.’

But despite her complaints, she had to go. It was better not to be alone at a time like this.

After changing her clothes, Perry Yates headed for the second-floor banquet hall.

On her way, she suddenly heard wails mixed with pleas for mercy.

"Stop! Please, stop! We know we were wrong! We won’t try to rob you again, we swear! Please, just let us go this time!"

Perry Yates followed the sound with her eyes and saw four or five people being beaten by a single man in a dim, inconspicuous corner.

The men on the ground were bruised and swollen, yet they continued to beg for their lives.

But the man beating them swung his fists with a cold, indifferent expression, one heavy blow after another landing with sickening thuds.

Perhaps sensing Perry Yates’s gaze, the man stopped what he was doing. He revealed a remarkably gentle face, if you could ignore the blood splattered on it...

’Come to think of it,’ Perry thought, ’it seems that after integrating with cards, players’ bodies are enhanced. The most obvious result is an improvement in their looks.’

’Maybe this is another way to identify a Croupier.’

As Perry Yates had this thought, the man’s eyes met hers. She immediately pulled her gaze away, pretending she’d seen nothing, and walked toward the elevator, staring straight ahead.

Her room was on the seventh floor, and the elevator was the fastest way to get there.

The man watched Perry Yates’s retreating figure, his eyes behind his glasses dark and unreadable.

Just as his attention was diverted, the look in one of the men’s eyes—who had just been kneeling and begging for mercy—suddenly changed. A dagger, glinting with a blue light and clearly coated in poison, materialized in his hand.

"Die!"

The man roared, a terrifying hatred erupting in his eyes.

However, his surprise attack failed.

The man simply tilted his head slightly, easily dodging the strike.

The dagger grazed the hair by his ear. It was as if he had anticipated everything, allowing him to dodge the blade with such ease that he didn’t even bother to move more than necessary.

The man grabbed his attacker’s arm and twisted it forcefully. The sound of bone snapping echoed with startling clarity in the silent corridor.

"AAAAH!!"

The attacker let out a string of agonized screams, yet somehow, no one seemed to notice the commotion.

The man stared down at the attacker writhing on the floor as if he were looking at trash. A ball of fire materialized in his hand, which he then tossed onto the man and his companions.

Soon, a chorus of screams erupted. The flames on their bodies seemed to be alive; no matter how they flailed, rolled on the ground, or even desperately tore off their clothes, they couldn’t extinguish the fire.

Left with no other choice, they sprinted toward the nearest window.

A moment later, the sound of shattering glass was heard, followed by the splashes of several bodies hitting the sea below.

Meanwhile, Perry Yates arrived at the banquet hall wearing an exaggerated clown mask, only to be stopped at the entrance by a server.

"Ma’am, about your mask..."

The server trailed off, her expression screaming the word "inappropriate."

Seeing the server’s predicament, Perry Yates didn’t make things difficult for her. She obligingly took off the clown mask, then pulled out a black surgical mask and put it on instead.

"This should be acceptable."

The server’s eye twitched as she looked at the mask on Perry Yates’s face. Normally, this would absolutely not be allowed. Guests at a masquerade ball were supposed to cover the top half of their faces; what was the point of covering the bottom half?

Besides, it wasn’t a proper mask, it was a surgical mask.

But after the shock of the clown mask, the server found the surgical mask somehow more tolerable.

She had already stopped her once, so this time...

"Please, come in."

And just like that, Perry Yates was allowed inside.

The server watched Perry Yates’s retreating figure and thought to herself, ’It’s the guest’s own choice. The captain won’t blame us for this, will he?’

After all, every member of the staff knew this "masquerade ball" was really just an event for the captain to choose a consort.

On every long voyage, the captain would choose a temporary lover from among the female guests to alleviate his loneliness at sea.

When Perry Yates entered the banquet hall, a large crowd had already gathered. Her arrival didn’t attract much attention.

Compared to the other guests in their lavish attire, Perry Yates’s simple outfit was utterly unremarkable, which suited her just fine.

Perry Yates made her way to the food and drink station. Looking at the various beverages and alcoholic drinks, she suddenly craved some juice. ’I should fill the Magic Water Pot with some next time. But for now...’

To be safe, Perry Yates used Identification on the juices.

[Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice

Unknown virus detected. Currently poses no harm to the human body.]

The question mark was gone, replaced by "unknown virus."

She checked the food next, and the situation was much the same as with the drinks; an unknown virus was detected, but it currently posed no harm to humans.

’But harmless now doesn’t mean harmless later.’

After a series of tests, Perry Yates discovered that ninety-nine percent of the food and drinks in the banquet hall were contaminated with the unknown virus.

The remaining one percent consisted of some candies, a pudding cake, and a type of hawthorn drink.

After trying each of these "survivors," Perry Yates discovered what they had in common: they were all sweet. The hawthorn drink was particularly so, being both sweet and sour.

’Could that be the reason? Does this unknown virus dislike sweetness?’

With that in mind, Perry Yates began stuffing fruit candies into the small bag she was carrying.

She didn’t grab a lot at once, instead taking a few here and there, gradually accumulating a small hoard.

By the time the party ended, no one had noticed what Perry Yates was doing. Everyone was too busy having fun; some couples had even started making out right there in public.

’No wonder they required masks—and masks that only cover the top half of the face, at that. It hides just enough to be shameless while leaving mouths free for making out.’

It was the classic case of putting on a mask to take off your inhibitions.
