Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 233: Haisa 16’Low-key?’
Perry Yates might have thought so before, but after learning of the Brain-Eater Bug’s existence, she was now wondering if this new captain was truly being low-key, or if there was a more sinister reason he hadn’t shown his face.
Just as Perry Yates was thinking this, a scream suddenly erupted from the direction of the crowd.
"No! I’m begging you, let me go! Let me go!"
This was followed by a flurry of panicked, hurried footsteps as the crowd that had just gathered on the deck suddenly scattered in chaos.
Using her enhanced vision, Perry Yates saw a tourist on the deck with ashen-black skin and blood-red eyes frantically gnawing on another tourist’s neck. Fresh blood spurted out, making for an incredibly gory scene.
Following that, more and more people began to mutate.
The tourists who had been screaming and running suddenly stopped in their tracks. Their bodies then began to contort, and in the process, the sound of grinding bones could even be heard.
Once their skin had turned completely ashen-black, these tourists, now mutated into zombies, joined the hunt for the remaining passengers.
Their teeth grew incredibly sharp, like vampires from the movies. The moment they saw someone, they would eagerly pounce and begin to bite and tear at them.
In just over ten minutes, only zombies and pools of blood remained on the deck. The other tourists had either gotten lucky and escaped, or they had been caught and bitten, turning into zombies themselves before they could be eaten alive.
Perry Yates observed the scene from the shadows.
She quickly noticed something: the zombies seemed to only be interested in normal flesh and blood.
When they first caught a normal tourist, the zombies would frantically devour them like food. But as soon as the victim also turned into a zombie, the attackers would immediately abandon them and move on to find a new target.
’But these people were perfectly normal just a moment ago. Why did they suddenly start mutating?’
’Based on my experience treating the man in the trench coat, the zombie virus should take time to incubate. A normal person can’t just turn into a zombie instantly. I must have missed something.’
With this in mind, Perry Yates focused on a relatively intact zombie, likely one of the first tourists who had turned.
"Identification."
[Basic-level Zombie
A zombie mutated by the zombie virus. It has ashen-black skin, movement indistinguishable from a normal person, and normal vision. Possesses hearing and smell far superior to a human’s. It craves fresh flesh and blood and is extremely sensitive to the scent of blood.
This zombie shows signs of being catalyzed by a Brain-Eater Bug.]
[Brain-Eater Bug
The natural enemy of the zombie virus. However, when the two meet, there is a chance it will accelerate the onset of the virus.
Zombies catalyzed by the Brain-Eater Bug have a chance to develop intelligence.]
’So that’s it. It really is related to the Brain-Eater Bug.’
Next, Perry Yates saw another zombie on the deck. Half its face was gone, and its intestines and organs spilled out, dragging on the ground as it moved slowly.
Compared to the Basic-level Zombie from before, this one more closely matched Perry Yates’s mental image of a zombie.
"Identification."
[Secondary Zombies
A zombie transformed from a Basic-level Zombie. It is slow-moving, possesses no capacity for thought, relies on sound and smell to find prey, and will obey the commands of Basic-level Zombies.]
Meanwhile, inside the ship’s cabins, those who had already been feeling unwell from the zombie virus had now completely turned into zombies.
They left their rooms and began hunting the ordinary tourists on the cruise ship. Soon, every deck of the vessel was filled with the roars of zombies and the terrified screams of passengers.
「Day 16 of the game.」
Inside the banquet hall, a tiny, miniature figure made of diamond sat atop an incredibly luxurious chandelier, pouring melted chocolate into its mouth.
Below her, a few zombies were wandering about.
’Just this morning, everything was perfectly peaceful and harmonious. In the blink of an eye, it’s turned into this—like we’ve walked onto the set of a zombie horror film.’
’I knew this ship wasn’t normal, but things weren’t this blatant before.’
Since the zombie virus outbreak, the captain had reacted quickly, organizing a group of survivors and patrol teams to fight back against the zombies on the cruise ship.
The numbers were heavily skewed against them, and not everyone had the courage to face zombies.
Fortunately, most of the mutated ones were slow-moving Secondary Zombies that acted on instinct, which made them relatively easy to deal with.
As a result, they achieved considerable success on the first day of their counterattack.
「Day 17 of the game.」
Perry Yates took advantage of the chaos to make her way to the decks above the seventh.
The cruise ship had twelve decks in total. The eighth, ninth, and tenth had nothing of note, but the eleventh deck housed a banquet hall.
This banquet hall was slightly smaller than the one on the second deck, but its decor was far more exquisite. It also had its own separate kitchen and a large stockpile of food.
All of the food was vacuum-packed. After Perry Yates used a tool to Identify it, she confirmed that, as expected, it was all safe to eat.
"This food looks a bit familiar."
’It looks like the food from the shipping containers.’
Then, upon seeing the familiar logo on the vacuum-sealed bags, Perry Yates was certain. This was the food from the shipping containers; it had somehow been moved here.
After a full sweep of the eleventh deck yielded no other discoveries, Perry Yates proceeded to the twelfth.
’If I’m right, the person I’m looking for should be here.’
...
Upon reaching the twelfth deck, the first thing she saw was a massive hall.
The hall was decorated in cool tones, creating a solemn and stately atmosphere. In the very center stood a round table made of marble, surrounded by twelve oddly-shaped chairs.
’What is this?’
’A round table meeting?’
As Perry Yates entered, the once-dim hall instantly brightened, as if welcoming her arrival.
But seeing this, Perry Yates felt not a single shred of joy. Instead, a bad feeling welled up inside her.
Just then, a flash of silver light flickered in Perry Yates’s vision.
She then strode into the hall. Without any hesitation, Perry Yates went to the chair at the head of the table and sat right down.
The next second, with a CLICK, a mechanism shot out from the chair, binding Perry Yates’s hands and feet and rendering her immobile.
Just then, a mocking voice drifted from nearby. "Well, look what I’ve caught this time. A tasty little mouse."
CLICK-CLACK, CLICK-CLACK.
The crisp sound of footsteps followed, and soon, a man dressed like a cowboy appeared in Perry Yates’s field of vision.
