Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 76: Solara 14The rain sent the people who had just been lining up outside into another frenzy.
Everyone started scrambling to find a place to shelter from the rain.
Although Perry Yates was currently controlling a Clone, she was afraid she’d be seen if it just vanished on the spot. So, she simply followed the crowd and ducked into the mall.
The first floor of the mall was now packed with people.
While taking shelter, the crowd didn’t forget to snatch up supplies.
The food that had just been put out was snapped up in the blink of an eye.
Even so, many people still came away empty-handed.
In the short span of ten-odd minutes, Perry Yates had already witnessed several shouting matches, all sparked by the competition for supplies.
As for why it was only shouting matches and not physical fights, it wasn’t because the people here were too civilized to throw a punch. It was because the area was simply too crowded; there was no room for them to even try.
Based on the principle of ’might as well, since I’m already here,’ Perry Yates decided to buy a few things herself. After all, she still had some cash on hand.
But she decided to forget about staples like grain. She was no match for the frantic older folks and had no desire to compete with them anyway.
Feeling her damp clothes, Perry Yates decided to go change first.
After going up to the third floor, Perry Yates found a restroom and changed out of her soaked clothes.
’Ah, that’s much better.’
After changing, Perry Yates went to the bubble tea shop on the second floor. She ordered a dozen or so teas in her favorite flavors, requesting double portions of every topping for each cup.
The shop’s employees had been quite idle, but her order suddenly sent them into a flurry of activity.
Just then, a shop assistant walked over and asked quietly, "Can you really drink all that bubble tea?"
Perry Yates glanced up, meeting the employee’s gossipy eyes, and put on a helpless expression. "I didn’t want to buy this much either," she said. "But I can’t compete with the others for supplies, you know? So I had to think outside the box."
"If something really does happen, bubble tea is high in sugar. Plus, with all these toppings, I can have one cup per meal. I won’t starve, right?"
Hearing Perry Yates’s explanation, the shop assistant’s face lit up with understanding. "You young people are so clever, thinking of a method like that."
Perry Yates just smiled without saying a word.
’That was just an excuse she’d made up on the spot. The real reason was simply that she was craving bubble tea and wanted to buy a bunch to enjoy at her leisure.’
After her dozen-plus teas were ready, Perry Yates left the shop. She then found a blind spot in the security camera coverage and stored all the drinks in her Space Backpack.
Next, she went to a cake shop.
The cake shop had some customers, but not many. This was likely because cakes have a short shelf life and spoil easily.
It was also possible that everyone’s attention was focused on the first floor, where new supplies were being restocked constantly only to be snatched up in an instant. No one had time to notice anything else.
Of course, the biggest reason was probably that most people were just following the herd, buying supplies for peace of mind more than anything else.
Perry Yates walked into the cake shop. The rich, sweet aroma of a dazzling array of cakes and all sorts of breads filled the air.
Just as before, she bought a small selection of her favorite cakes and breads.
After leaving the cake shop, she found a corner and stored all the cakes and bread away.
Originally, Perry Yates had planned to just dismiss the Clone, but before she did, she seemed to remember something. She headed to a mobile phone store and bought a tablet.
Afterward, she found a deserted corner, sat down, and started downloading all sorts of anime using the mall’s free Wi-Fi.
She had originally considered downloading TV series, but she hadn’t been able to get into any for a long time, even back on Cerulea. So, she opted for some highly-rated anime and movies instead.
Once all the anime and movies were downloaded, Perry Yates got up, walked to an empty corner, and dismissed her Clone.
「Inside the Safe House.」
Perry Yates eagerly took out the bubble tea and cake she had just bought, sipping her drink as she nibbled on a pastry.
She then took out the new tablet, opened a freshly downloaded anime, and began watching with great enjoyment.
Outside, the rain was still falling, now accompanied by strong winds and thunder.
「Day seven of the game. The downpour continues.」
Perry Yates didn’t go out today, not even sending out a Clone. The storm outside was simply too terrifying.
Perry Yates personally watched as a bolt of lightning split a tree in half.
Fortunately, Perry Yates’s Safe House was no ordinary shelter. Otherwise, she’d be worried about it being blown away by the wind or struck by lightning.
「Day eight of the game. The downpour showed no signs of stopping; instead, it grew even more intense.」
But even this couldn’t stop the commuters. After all, it was just rain, and being late for work meant a real dock in pay.
After three consecutive days of torrential rain, the city’s drainage system finally began to fail.
Massive amounts of rainwater, unable to drain away in time, flooded the city’s underground malls, parking garages, and subway systems.
With the subways out of commission, people could only choose to drive or take taxis, causing severe traffic congestion and increasing the frequency of accidents.
Perry Yates read the news on her phone.
It reported a multi-car pile-up on a major road, with the transportation department urging residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary to avoid danger.
「Day nine of the game. The downpour continues.」
The water on the streets was now over a dozen centimeters deep, already submerging people’s calves.
Some people living on the ground floor had already started moving to higher levels.
At the same time, the meteorological department issued a typhoon warning, making an already terrible weather situation even worse.
The moment the typhoon news broke, prices everywhere skyrocketed.
Instant noodles that originally cost three yuan a pack shot up to thirty, and they were still selling out in a flash.
However, none of this had anything to do with Perry Yates.
She was on the top floor of a building, so there was no danger of flooding. Besides, her Safe House had its own protective functions; she wasn’t afraid of any typhoon.
Inside her Safe House, she was living an incredibly comfortable life.
Every morning, she would wake up, wash her face, eat breakfast, and then watch the anime and movies she’d downloaded while continuously using Ascension on her cards and food.
By around noon, her energy would be completely depleted.
At this point, Perry Yates wouldn’t eat the Ascended food to restore her energy. Instead, she’d have a normal lunch and then take a nap.
When she woke up in the afternoon, her energy would be mostly recovered.
