Apocalypse: I Can See Health Bars

Chapter 106 - 105: Interface Module

Chapter 106: Chapter 105: Interface Module

He raised the long spear and smashed it down. The razor-sharp energy coiling around the shaft instantly sliced through the iron lock on the gate, sending fragments shattering to the ground.

This was Lin Fan’s first time testing the complete version of the Sharpness Crystal. Like the Impact Crystal, it could be charged to store power.

The damaged version of the Sharpness Crystal hadn’t been able to break the lock in one hit. After switching to the complete version and charging it with 5 points of energy, he finally shattered it.

He had no idea when this gate at the residential complex’s entrance had been locked. Lin Fan always went in and out through his shop’s entrance and rarely came this way.

But this time, they needed to get the "mobile fortress" inside. He’d had Chu Zhaozhao give it a try, but lifting the thing—which weighed hundreds of pounds—over the surrounding wall was too strenuous and wasted too much energy. They had no choice but to go through the main gate.

Aside from those lured to the base of Lin Fan’s building by the previous banshee zombie, the zombies inside the complex were mostly spread out. Peeking through the main gate, he could only see a few scattered about.

"Zhaozhao, see if your ability can pierce a zombie’s skull..."

As he spoke, Lin Fan raised his long spear and banged it against the group’s iron shell. CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Seeing the distant zombies stir, he stepped back and cleared the path.

Seeing Lin Fan call out Chu Zhaozhao, the others quietly squatted down inside the trash can, leaving only their heads poking out, ready to pull them back in at any moment...

"Huh? I’m not mentally prepared..."

The three distant zombies ran faster and faster, and in the blink of an eye, they were roaring as they charged right up to the "mobile fortress"!

"Ah... Screw it!"

Driven by Chu Zhaozhao’s ability, the long spear shot up with a WHOOSH, spinning as it swung down on the first zombie’s head!

THUD! The blow slightly deformed the zombie’s head, knocking it lopsided to the ground, but it clearly wasn’t dead.

[189/300]. ’Decent force, but not fatal.’

"Not enough power! Pierce it!"

Lin Fan said from behind.

"I know!"

Chu Zhaozhao saw that the zombie on the ground wasn’t dead and was struggling to get back up. With a flick of her right hand, she pulled the short spear out from the trash can, tossing it outwards and guiding it with her ability to stab straight into the fallen zombie’s head!

Meanwhile, the original long spear spun in mid-air, aimed at another approaching zombie, and shot forward to pierce it!

With two wet squelches, the heads of both zombies were pierced almost simultaneously!

"Ah!"

Chu Zhaozhao cried out in alarm. The third zombie had already charged right up to her, and she didn’t have time to recall the two spears she had just used!

In her panic, she didn’t even have time to think. As the zombie lunged at her, instinct took over!

Chu Zhaotian felt an irresistible force suddenly tear the long spear from his tight grip. It became a blur, shooting straight for the third zombie’s head!

THUNK!

With a resounding crack, the spear pierced the zombie’s skull without losing momentum and stabbed into the concrete below. The zombie’s corpse pitched forward, slamming against the side of the trash can and leaving a bloody smear.

[153/153]. Chu Zhaozhao had killed three zombies, and her Life Value had indeed increased by 3 points. But what surprised Lin Fan even more was that her Energy Value had increased as well!

[204/306]!

’An increase of 6 points!’

However, simultaneously controlling three weapons in combat had caused her mana to drain rapidly. In just four or five seconds, it had dropped by nearly twenty points, almost dipping below two hundred.

"See? You were perfectly prepared... Just... don’t snatch your brother’s spear next time..."

Lin Fan walked forward and picked up the spear that Chu Zhaozhao, in her panic, had used to pierce the zombie’s skull. He wiped it clean on the corpse and handed it back to Chu Zhaotian.

"I... I was a little nervous..."

Chu Zhaozhao stared at the three dead zombies before her, the initial excitement of awakening her power finally wearing off. She slowly recalled the long and short spears to her hands and spoke, panting heavily.

"You did great. Deep breaths..."

Lin Fan rubbed her shoulder reassuringly, then lightly tapped her on the head and said,

"Next time something like that happens, either pull back into the shell or call for help. Let others back you up. It’s about teamwork. Don’t try to be a hero, and especially don’t snatch someone else’s spear... Start by using just one to get used to combat. I’ll make you a new, more suitable weapon later..."

The fact that Chu Zhaozhao had subconsciously snatched someone’s weapon in her panic had genuinely startled Lin Fan, which was why he quickly repeated himself.

’But based on what I just saw,’ he thought, ’a long spear is fine when wielded by hand, but it’s not practical when controlled purely by an ability like Zhaozhao’s. It’s too long and clumsy. I really need to design a new weapon for her.’

"And I can confirm you’ve gotten stronger after killing those three zombies. You might not feel it yet, but the more you kill, the more obvious it will become!"

Having confirmed that Chu Zhaozhao, just like Su Qing, grew stronger by killing zombies—a growth reflected not just in her Life Value but also in her energy bar—Lin Fan told her directly to boost her confidence.

As he spoke, Lin Fan turned to the others.

"This goes for all of you. We’re going to meet up downstairs from our building. Chu Zhaotian and Su Qing, you two have walkie-talkies. If you run into any danger or a Mutated Zombie, call me immediately. Otherwise, focus all your energy on clearing out normal zombies. Our goal is to kill a hundred of them before noon today!"

"You got the confidence?!"

Lin Fan pumped his fist, but no one responded...

"Not really..."

Su Qing muttered from her side of the fortress. Except for Chu Zhaozhao, who was still in a daze, the other two silently nodded in agreement.

One hundred zombies. The number left them a little dazed. ’How did the target suddenly become a three-digit number...?’

"Tch... Zhaozhao! Kill one hundred zombies, and you’ll be twice as strong! You got the confidence for that?!"

Lin Fan ignored Su Qing, turning instead to Chu Zhaozhao. Seeing that she was starting to come around and that the fighting spirit was returning to her eyes, he clapped her on the shoulder and asked.

"A hundred... twice as strong? Big Bro... Yes! I’m confident!"

Hearing that she could truly become stronger, Chu Zhaozhao’s spirits lifted instantly, a fire of determination igniting in her heart.

"Same goes for the rest of you,"

Lin Fan said sternly,

"So, how about it? You got the confidence?!"

"...Yes!"

Su Qing and the others answered in unison, their gazes hardening as they looked at Lin Fan.

"What do you do if you see a few scattered zombies?"

"Kill them!"

"What do you do if you see dozens of zombies?"

"Hide!"

"Have Zhaozhao make a noise to split them up, then kill them!"

"What do you do if you run into a Mutated Zombie you can’t beat?"

"Use the injector! Run into a building!"

"Excellent! Move out!"

...

"Zhaozhao’s Moving Castle" creaked and groaned as it rolled deeper into the complex. Lin Fan stood at the entrance watching them go, then closed the iron gate and slid the bolt shut to keep any zombies from escaping.

A few zombies farther in the complex, drawn by the noise, swarmed the trash can, but the team inside dispatched them with ease.

Seeing that none of their Life Values had dropped, Lin Fan relaxed. He jogged back to his building, up to the sixth floor, and went through the hatch to the roof.

He sat on the edge of the roof, legs dangling over the side, and gazed into the distance.

The "mobile fortress" had to wind its way around two other buildings, so it would be a little while.

From his high vantage point, Lin Fan scanned the area. Besides the few dozen health bars wandering around directly below him, he could only see another few dozen scattered sparsely throughout the complex. Buildings and trees obscured his view of anything farther away, but overall, the numbers weren’t that high.

Resting the iron spear across his lap, Lin Fan focused his thoughts and took out the pale blue, circular badge.

[Interface Module: A one-time, permanent link between an object and an energy crystal, creating an energy conduit.]

[The user can expend their own energy to activate the object and use the crystal’s inherent channeled ability. (Can co-exist with the user’s own equipped crystal abilities.)]

[Upon first establishing a link, it will consume partial materials to scan and store a structural blueprint (adjustable). If the linked item is damaged or lost, it can be repaired or re-created from the blueprint by consuming specified materials.]

’Since Liu Bin and his group are already out scouting for Mutated Zombies, I need to pick up my own pace, too...’
