The door had barely swung open three inches when the shadows along the baseboard came alive.

They surged forward like thick, liquid iron, whipping through the narrow gap and wrapping around Lin Tao’s ankles with crushing force.

Before he could take a single step across the threshold, the dark tendrils yanked him backward with a violent jerk, slamming his back hard against the wall. A muffled gasp escaped his throat as the shadow bindings pinned his limbs flat against the masonry, neutralizing his momentum in less than a second.

Lu Ning gasped, her heart leaping into her throat as a cold shockwave of panic shot through her chest. She spun around on her heel, her eyes wide with terror, expecting to see a squad of soilders pointing their rifles directly at her head.

Instead, standing in the dim blue glow of the recessed doorway just twenty paces down the hall was Han Ye.

He stood perfectly still, his hands tucked calmly into the pockets of his jacket. There was no panic on his small face, no childish alarm in his posture, and not even the slightest hint that he intended to cry out or raise an alarm for the base security teams. His eyes fixed onto Lu Ning with a terrifying weight—a gaze so heavy and devoid of youthful innocence that it made her blood instantly run cold.

With a subtle, flicking motion of his fingers, a thin strand of shadow darted forward across the concrete floorboards like a strike-ready viper. It snared Dr. Zhou’s stolen keycard straight out of Lu Ning’s trembling hands, lifted it quietly into the air, and glided it smoothly into Han Ye’s small jacket pocket.

Lu Ning stumbled backward until her heels hit the lower edge of the door, her hands pressing tightly over her mouth to suppress a hysterical cry.

"Han... Han Ye?" she stammered, her voice cracking as sweat beaded along her forehead. "What... what are you doing down here? How did you—"

"You are foolish," Han Ye said softly. His voice was quiet, almost delicate, but every word fell with an icy, absolute finality that echoed through the empty corridor. "You don’t even know who or what is locked behind that glass. All you know are the words of a prisoner, and you were reckless enough to open his cell."

Han Ye had already figured out that Lin Tao had most likely manipulated Lu Ning into freeing him.

"I—I’m not being foolish!" Lu Ning stammered, her voice shaking violently as she raised a trembling finger toward the cell. "Lin Qing... she tricked your father, bewitched him! She’s keeping him trapped, she’s hiding horrible secrets—"

"My father is not a fool," Han Ye cut her off coldly, his expression completely devoid of emotion. "He is a battle-hardened commander. He would never do anything stupid while ’bewitched,’ as you so delusionally believe in your head. Lin Tao was locked in that cell by the leadership of this base, and you have no authority to override that."

Inside the holding cell, the sudden, abrupt shift in momentum shattered Lin Tao’s pitiful act into a thousand pieces. Realizing his golden ticket to freedom was slipping through his fingers because of a five-year-old child, the despairing, fragile persona he had carefully cultivated over the past three days instantly vanished.

"You stupid bitch!" Lin Tao roared, his face contorting into a violent, ugly scowl as he thrashed uselessly against the shadow tendrils pinning him to the concrete wall. His fake tears were replaced by raw, unbridled malice. "Press the door button! Grab the card back from the brat! Do something, you useless, brainless idiot!"

Lu Ning froze, her entire body stiffening as she backed away from the glass in absolute horror. The soft-spoken, victimized man who had wept for three days was completely gone. In his place was a snarling, vicious stranger spitting curses at her with pure, unadulterated venom.

"Look at him," Han Ye said, his dark eyes never leaving Lu Ning’s pale, horrified face. "Whatever promises he made to you through that glass, that is the man you just risked everything for."

Lu Ning’s knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed onto the hard floor. The realization hit her like a bucket of ice water—Lin Tao had lied to her. Every sob story, every plea for help, every tearful description of Lin Qing’s supposed ’cruelty’ had been nothing more than a performance to use her as an easy key. She had been played like an absolute fool.

Standing in the quiet, shadow-draped corridor, Han Ye looked at the two of them, his mind running through a cold calculation.

’I could kill them both right now,’ he thought, his shadows coiling beneath his feet like a strike-ready predator. ’A quick snap of the neck for Lin Tao, a shadow blade through Lu Ning’s throat. Clean. Efficient. The threat would be erased forever, and no one would ever pose an internal risk again.’

It was his natural, ingrained instinct as a survivor who had lived through decades of slaughter in his past life. In the post-apocalyptic wasteland, dead variables didn’t cause problems. But as the dark thoughts surfaced, his mind quickly erased the idea from a broader strategic perspective.

If two people suddenly turned up dead inside a locked, high-security facility on the eve of a major expedition, the entire base would instantly go into an emergency lockdown. The mystery of who killed them would spark panic, suspicion, and internal chaos among the survivors. Worse, Captain Lu Feng would be devastated by his sister’s death, completely compromising his squad’s focus and emotional stability.

Han Zheng was leading a dangerous, high-stakes supply run into the lower valley on Thursday morning. He needed his mind entirely clear, and he needed Lu Feng and the Iron Falcon squad at peak combat efficiency. Lu Feng’s team was far too useful to the base’s long-term survival to risk souring relations or causing internal friction over Lu Ning’s brainwashed stupidity.

’Killing them creates far more problems than it solves,’ Han Ye concluded coldly. ’Not tonight.’

With a sharp, fluid wave of his small hand, Han Ye’s shadows released Lin Tao and slammed the heavy steel door shut. The lock engaged with a loud, final ’CLACK’. Lin Tao’s furious screams and curses were instantly muffled behind the thick, soundproof reinforced glass, reducing his violent rage to silent, pathetic gesticulations.

Han Ye stepped out of the doorway, walking slowly toward Lu Ning. Though he was barely half her height, the sheer pressure emanating from his frame forced Lu Ning backward step by step until her spine hit the wall.

The shadows along the corridor floor suddenly writhed and expanded, rising up behind Han Ye like towering, sharp-edged blades that completely blocked out the dim blue emergency light. The ambient temperature in the hallway seemed to plunge below freezing.

"Listen to me carefully," Han Ye whispered, his dark eyes glittering in the gloom like polished obsidian. "My father is leaving on a dangerous mission, and I will not allow a single distraction to compromise his safety or the stability of this base. If you ever do something this dumb again... if you so much as breathe in Mother’s direction with malice... I will personally come after you. And no one will ever find where your body went."

Lu Ning’s breath hitched in her throat, her chest heaving as tears of sheer panic overflowed onto her pale cheeks. Terrified beyond words by the monstrous, unnatural aura bleeding off the five-year-old, she nodded frantically, unable to form a single sentence.

"Go back to your room," Han Ye commanded softly, the towering shadows instantly sinking back into the floorboards as if they had never existed. "Act like nothing happened."

Lu Ning didn’t wait a single second longer. She scrambled to her feet and fled up the metallic stairwell like a frightened animal, her rapid, panicked footsteps fading into the distance above.

Han Ye stood alone in the quiet hallway, the silence settling back over the area. He reached into his pocket and pulled out Dr. Zhou’s white access card. Walking silently back toward the residential wing, he slipped into the medical office, replaced the keycard deep inside the breast pocket of Dr. Zhou’s hanging coat, and stepped back out into the main corridor.

He knew his own physical limits in this five-year-old body. He didn’t know the exact story Lin Tao had spun to trick Lu Ning, nor could he personally police every corridor twenty-four hours a day while maintaining his innocent cover in front of his father and everyone else. He needed an authority figure who possessed both the ruthlessness to investigate the situation and the official power to manage the base while Han Zheng was away in the valley.

Han Zheng was heading out into the dangerous mountain terrain, but Lin Qing was remaining behind. She was, without a doubt, the best person to handle this situation.

Walking softly through the quiet residential suite, Han Ye approached the door of Lin Qing’s room. He raised a hand and knocked three soft times against the wooden door.

---

The wooden door eased open without a sound. Lin Qing stood in the doorway, dressed in her trousers and a simple shirt, her eyes scanning the corridor before dropping down to look at Han Ye.

She didn’t show surprise or irritation at being woken at midnight. Instead, her gaze sharpened instantly, reading the quiet, unnatural composure on the boy’s face.

"Han Ye?" Lin Qing asked softly, stepping back to let him slide into the room. "Why aren’t you sleeping?"

Han Ye closed the door gently behind him. He looked up at Lin Qing, his expression completely calm.

"Mother," Han Ye said, his small voice steady and clear in the quiet room. "Lu Ning just stole Dr. Zhou’s keycard and unlocked Lin Tao’s door."

Lin Qing’s eyes narrowed, her instincts activating instantly. She didn’t gasp or raise her voice; she simply absorbed the information with cold precision.

"Is Lin Tao out?" Lin Qing asked calmly.

"No," Han Ye replied, pulling his hands into his pockets. "I was watching her. I used my shadows to push Lin Tao back inside and locked the cell door again. I put Dr. Zhou’s keycard back in her lab coat pocket so no one would know it was moved."

Lin Qing looked down at the five-year-old, a quiet wave of respect and silent understanding passing between them.

"Did she tell you why she did it?" Lin Qing asked, her mind already calculating the psychological angles.

"She kept saying you were tricking Father and hiding things from the past," Han Ye said truthfully. "I don’t know what specific lies Lin Tao told her over the last few days, but when the door opened and he got locked back in, he lost his temper and started screaming curses at her. She realized he was using her and ran back to her room terrified."

Lin Qing stared at him for a long moment before a small, cold smile touched her lips. She reached out and patted his shoulder gently.

"You handled it perfectly, Han Ye," Lin Qing said softly, her voice filled with quiet approval. "If Lin Tao showed his true face, her illusion is already broken, but I will find out exactly what he fed her."

"Why didn’t you wake your father or raise the base alarm?" Lin Qing asked, confirming his reasoning.

"Father is leading the supply run on Thursday," Han Ye explained simply, his tone carrying the logic of an experienced strategist. "If the alarm went off tonight, Captain Lu Feng would find out his sister committed treason. It would cause chaos, ruin morale, and distract Father right before he goes into the valley. Lu Feng’s squad is useful to us. We shouldn’t destroy the relationship over Lu Ning’s stupidity."

Lin Qing nodded, her tone shifting into the sharp, commanding register of a top soldier preparing a strategy. "Leave the rest to me. I’ll address Lu Ning quietly tomorrow. You go back to your room and get some rest. Your father leaves at dawn on Thursday, and I will ensure this base stays completely secure while he is gone."

"Understood," Han Ye said softly.

He turned and slipped back out into the quiet corridor, returning to his room with a lightened mind.

Inside her room, Lin Qing stood near the door in the dim light, her clear eyes glittering with cool, calculated resolve. The internal threat was contained for tonight, but as the one in charge while Han Zheng was away, she would make sure Lu Ning learned the absolute weight of her actions—without risking the stability of the sanctuary.
