The quiet, functional atmosphere inside the central command hub of the Research Center was broken by the distinct, heavy crunch of boots echoing down the corridor.

Old Wang stepped into the command room alongside Xiao Li. Both men wore thick, snow-dusted thermal coats, their gear smelling of cold mountain air and ozone. They had just returned from an extended long-range reconnaissance sweep along the southern perimeter of Sector 8—a remote, treacherous border zone that anyone rarely ventured into due to the sheer density of collapsed infrastructure even before the apocalypse.

Old Wang walked straight to the primary console, where Lin Qing was reviewing the morning logistics logs.

"Vice Commander," Old Wang spoke up, his rough, gravelly voice carrying an unexpected weight of suppressed excitement. "You’re going to want to take a look at this."

Lin Qing looked up from her tablet, her eyes calm and attentive as she gestured for him to continue. "Report, Old Wang."

Old Wang stepped forward, pressing his finger onto the interactive map display, highlighting a specific set of geographic coordinates tucked deep within an isolated mountain valley.

"It was completely buried under the collapsed foundation of an old grain processing plant," Old Wang explained, his eyes fixed on the digital topography. "We were running a routine perimeter sweep when a minor rockslide shifted a massive slab of cracked concrete. I happened to catch a glint of metal underneath the rubble. When we cleared the top layer of dirt, we found an inch of high-grade, reinforced military steel sticking out."

Xiao Li stepped up beside Old Wang, nodding eagerly as he took over the technical breakdown. "Old Wang spotted the steel edge first. We spent nearly three hours manually clearing away the heavy concrete debris and cutting through a fried secondary power circuit to bypass the rusted electronic lock. Inside, we found a deep, fully pressurized underground reserve vault—completely untouched."

Han Zheng walked into the command hub, his tall, broad frame casting a long shadow across the illuminated floor panels. He took a spot beside Lin Qing, his dark eyes sweeping over the highlighted coordinates on the screen.

"What’s the haul?" Han Zheng asked, his deep, smooth voice cutting cleanly through the steady hum of the server racks.

"High-grade canned proteins, vacuum-sealed dry rations, preserved grain stocks, and sealed medical crates," Old Wang reported, a rare, genuine grin breaking across his worn face. "It’s a massive reserve vault. There is enough food down there to supplement our entire base’s dietary intake for months. But it’s located far out—nearly forty miles into the desolate border passes along Sector 8."

Lin Qing zoomed in on the terrain map, her mind immediately calculating the logistical variables. "Because of the sheer distance and the massive volume of the stash, a single transport run won’t be enough to clear it out. If we leave a vault of that size open, weather shifts or wandering scavengers might compromise it."

"We need a heavy-hauler convoy," Old Wang agreed. "The truck we took only brought back what little we could cram into the rear bed. The main vault is still packed to the ceiling."

Lin Qing turned her head to look directly at Han Zheng, her dark eyes clear and resolute. "I’ll lead the second transport detail. We’ll take three trucks, a technical crew to package the remaining crates, and a full escort squad."

Han Zheng looked down at her, his expression remaining cool and unreadable for a silent, heavy beat. He evaluated the risks of the route—the long distance, the unmonitored border pass, and the unpredictable terrain.

"Agreed," Han Zheng said smoothly, his tone carrying a firm, unyielding authority. "However, I am going with you."

Lin Qing raised an eyebrow slightly, her posture composed. "The base—"

"The base is completely secure under Lu Feng and Guo Jiong," Han Zheng cut in calmly, his gaze fixed on hers with absolute certainty. "A resource haul of this scale out in an unmonitored border pass is an extremely high-value target. I won’t risk losing the haulers, nor will I leave you without maximum fire support out in the open wasteland."

Lin Qing didn’t argue. She recognized the logic behind his decision and gave a subtle, decisive nod. "Then we assemble the convoy immediately."

By 8:00 AM, the cavernous concrete expanse of the lower loading bay reverberated with the deep, throaty roar of heavy diesel engines.

The air was thick with the scent of exhaust and cold mountain air as the expedition team prepared to roll out. The convoy was formidable—composed of three massive, six-wheeled armored supply haulers outfitted with heavy front ram-plates, flanked by the SUV.

The massive blast gates rolled open with a heavy mechanical groan, exposing the blinding white glare of the snow-covered mountain pass outside. One by one, the heavy vehicles rumbled down the concrete ramp, their massive studded tires crushing through the frozen slush as they hit the main highway, heading south into the desolate expanse of Sector 8.

The journey through the winding mountain roads was quiet for the first two hours. Snow flurries danced across the cracked asphalt, and the desolate, skeleton-like ruins of abandoned gas stations, civilian cars, and collapsed highway overpasses drifted past like silent ghosts of the old world.

Inside the lead vehicle, Han Zheng sat behind the heavy steering wheel, his shoulders relaxed yet completely alert, his hands gripping the wheel with effortless control. Beside him in the passenger seat, Lin Qing operated the central console, her dark eyes scanning the perimeter radar sweep and monitoring the long-range radio frequencies.

"Sector 8 perimeter is completely dead," Lin Qing observed calmly, her fingers tapping a smooth rhythm against the dashboard. "Thermal scans show zero biological or mechanical signatures within a three-mile radius."

Han Zheng glanced at the side mirror, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he took in the endless stretch of empty white road behind them. "It’s too quiet."

Suddenly, the comms speaker mounted on the dashboard crackled to life with sharp static. It was the voice of the guard driving the rear escort.

"Commander, Vice Commander," the driver reported, his tone tense and clipped. "Rear escort reporting. A single unidentified vehicle appeared on the horizon behind us roughly ten minutes ago. It’s keeping a fixed distance of six hundred yards. It matched our speed the moment we cleared the secondary ridge."

Lin Qing immediately bypassed the local feed, bringing up the rear vehicle’s high-definition camera feed directly onto her dashboard display screen.

Sure enough, a dark, elevated SUV-type vehicle was idling along the snowy asphalt far behind the convoy. It maintained a precise, calculated distance—neither closing in to attack nor dropping behind to break line-of-sight.

"Scavengers?" Lin Qing murmured, her brow furrowing slightly as she analyzed the vehicle’s steady tracking pattern.

"Scavengers don’t trail a four-hauler armored military convoy alone," Han Zheng replied coldly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register.

"They don’t have the fire support or the discipline. That vehicle isn’t trying to attack us—it’s marking our coordinates and tracking our route."

Han Zheng reached down, pressing the primary comms button on the steering column. "All units, execute Evasion Pattern Beta. We take the secondary pass through the canyon ridge. Let’s test their intent."

The heavy convoy responded instantly. The lead hauler veered sharply off the main highway, its massive tires grinding through deep snowbanks as it rumbled onto a narrow, winding mountain road cut through steep, jagged rock faces. The heavy haulers picked up speed, thick plumes of white snow kicking up high into the freezing air behind them as they attempted to break line-of-sight through the winding rock turns.

For several minutes, the rear camera feed showed nothing but empty, swirling snow and towering grey canyon walls.

"Did we break their line-of-sight?" the rear escort driver asked over the comms channel.

Before Lin Qing or Han Zheng could answer, the terrain around them drastically constricted.

The narrow canyon road suddenly pinched into a sharp, narrow bottleneck—flanked on both sides by sheer, vertical cliffs of solid stone that rose dozens of feet into the grey sky, leaving zero room for maneuverability.

RUMBLE—!

The ground beneath their heavy tires vibrated violently, the sound of grinding metal and roaring engines echoing off the rock faces.

From the shadows of a hidden side ravine directly at the far end of the bottleneck pass, three massive, dark armored vehicles suddenly surged forward into the middle of the road. Their drivers slammed on the brakes, turning the heavy steel bodies sideways across the narrow path, completely sealing off the front route.

"Front block!" Han Zheng barked, his sharp reflexes instantly taking over. He slammed his foot onto the brake pedal while violently whipping the heavy wheel, bringing the lead vehicle to a controlled skid just feet away from the rock wall to prevent a chain-reaction collision.

Behind them, two more heavy vehicles burst out from a concealed alcove, turning sideways and sealing off the rear escape route.

The entire four-hauler convoy ground to a sudden, screeching halt, trapped like a long iron snake inside a tight stone cage.

"Security perimeter locked!" Lin Qing shouted, her movement fluid and instantaneous as her hands unholstered her sidearm and reached for her shotgun. Her dark eyes swept over the high cliff ledges on either side of the canyon. "We are completely boxed in!"

The deafening roar of high-powered diesel engines vibrated against the narrow canyon walls.

The thick clouds of dust and snow kicked up by the sudden stop slowly began to settle under the dim winter sun, revealing the full extent of the trap.

Lin Qing and Han Zheng stared out through the thick, bulletproof windshield of their lead cab, their expressions hardening into masks of absolute vigilance.

The lead vehicle blocking the front path was not a crude, rust-covered scavenger truck welded together from scrap metal and wire. It was a sleek, heavy-duty, state-of-the-art all-terrain command transport—painted in a cold, dark matte-grey military camouflage, equipped with high-caliber automated roof-turrets, and bearing a reinforced, solid-iron ram-plate.

It was an elite, high-spec military vehicle.

Before anyone in the convoy could react, the heavy side doors of the surrounding armored trucks hissed open with sharp pneumatic pressure.

Dozens of heavily armed soldiers, clad in matching dark body armor, reinforced helmets, and armed with high-caliber assault rifles, stepped out smoothly into the deep snow. Their movements were sharp, disciplined, and flawlessly coordinated as they formed a lethal perimeter, pointing their rifles directly at Han Zheng and Lin Qing’s cab.

Lin Qing’s pulse quickened slightly as her eyes locked onto the crisp, silver military insignia emblazoned on the side of the lead command truck—a cold, realization settling deep in her mind as she looked out at a fully equipped, professional army operating out in the middle of a desolate border pass.
