Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Chapter 167: The Device, The Divide & The Stubborn Stand

Inside the lead cab, the radio speaker hummed with low, static-laced breathing. The cold mountain pass outside was deathly silent, broken only by the rhythmic idling diesel rumble of the surrounding military transports and the high, lonely whistle of mountain wind cutting against the reinforced glass.

Lin Qing didn’t hesitate. While keeping her eyes fixed on the armed figures fanning out across the snow-dusted asphalt, her left hand moved smoothly beneath the edge of the dash console, her fingers finding the hidden toggle switch.

She typed out a rapid, three-digit emergency override code on the secondary keypad, broadcasting a high-priority, encrypted distress signal—and their exact GPS coordinates—directly back to the command desk at the Research Center.

Beside her, Han Zheng’s dark eyes swept across the tactical layout. He didn’t see just men; he saw lines of fire, cover points, and the restricted geometry of the canyon. They were boxed in. Five heavy armored transports were positioned to create a lethal kill-box, and dozens of disciplined soldiers were currently leveling high-caliber assault rifles at the cab’s metal frame.

He reached down, keying the inner comms channel that linked to the rear haulers and SUV.

"Listen closely," Han Zheng said, his deep voice smooth, quiet, and devoid of panic. "The enemy is organized, heavily armed, and holding the choke point. We don’t have the room to maneuver heavy haulers in a tight canyon. The moment I step out and create a distraction, Ah Hua—you take the depot guards, spin the rear haulers around, and execute a hard retreat back to base."

"Commander!" Ah Hua’s voice crackled over the speaker, sharp with protest. His hands gripped the heavy steering wheel tightly, his power-enhanced physical strength already straining the leather lining of the steering wheel. "The perimeter is too tight! We can’t leave you in the middle of a trap—"

"That’s an order," Han Zheng cut in with absolute, cold authority. "They aren’t here for the trucks. They want something specific, and they’re holding back their heavy fire to keep their ’assets’ intact. I’ll draw their focus. Get the logistics team out and bring reinforcements."

Han Zheng didn’t wait for a reply. He unlatched his heavy door and pushed it open, the freezing mountain air rushing in to meet him as he stepped out into the snow.

Lin Qing unfastened her harness and grabbed her weapon, stepping out right beside him. Old Wang, his face set in a stony, unyielding scowl, unslung his custom bolt-action sniper rifle as he jumped down from the passenger side of his truck. His eyes didn’t look at the soldiers in front of him; they were already mapping out the sniper perimeters along the upper cliff ledges, scanning for hidden spotters.

Xiao Li stepped out behind them. Before his boots even hit the ground, his skin began to darken, a dense, slate-grey molecular layer of mineral coating his arms and shoulders like natural plate mail. His Earth Hardening power was already active, his posture shifting into that of an immovable frontline tank.

The heavy snow crunched under their boots as the four of them stood in front of the lead truck.

The lead commander of the military squad stepped forward through the settling exhaust smoke. He was dressed in a pristine, dark-grey coat with reinforced ballistic shoulder guards. In his right hand, he held a boxy, modified handheld scanner outfitted with a flickering digital display tube and a thick copper antenna that vibrated with a low-frequency hum.

As the commander approached, the device suddenly erupted into a series of sharp, frantic clicks. The needle on the analog gauge slammed hard into the red zone, the copper coil glowing with a faint, static-blue charge as it pointed directly at Han Zheng.

A slow, calculating grin spread across the commander’s face, revealing teeth stained by cheap tobacco.

"Well, well," the commander said, his voice cold and raspy, carrying the arrogance of a man who held all the cards. He completely ignored the massive, empty trucks sitting behind them. "My device hasn’t pinged an energy signature this dense since we started sweeping this sector. We were worried we’d have to settle for common-tier talent today."

He swept the scanner slightly to the side. The device gave two softer, rhythmic clicks as it passed over Xiao Li’s stone-hardened frame, then went completely silent when pointed at Old Wang and Lin Qing.

"Two non-powered civilians, one mid level energy signature, and one massive jackpot," the commander noted, gesturing with his hand.

Behind him, four soldiers stepped forward carrying heavy, mechanized shock-shackles—thick, wire-reinforced suppression loops designed to deliver a high-voltage neural override to anyone with an active biological field. "Our directive from the higher-ups is clear. You two with the signatures are coming with us. Hand over your weapons and put on the restraints."

Han Zheng took a single, deliberate step forward, his tall, imposing frame effortlessly blocking Xiao Li and Lin Qing from view. Beneath his jacket, his internal kinetic reserves hummed—a silent, gathering storm of pressure waiting to be unleashed.

"I’m the one you’re looking for," Han Zheng said calmly, his dark eyes locking onto the commander’s. "Let the rest of the convoy turn back. I’ll step into your transport without a fight."

"Commander, no!" Xiao Li barked, his voice sounding like grinding gravel as his stone armor shifted over his vocal cords. "I’m not going anywhere! We aren’t cattle to be harvested!"

Old Wang raised his rifle with terrifying speed and stability, the barrel pointed perfectly at the commander’s throat. His face was grim, his finger hovering inches from the trigger. "I’ve served under you for years, Commander. If you think I’m running back to base while you walk into a cage, you’ve lost your mind. I’m not leaving my post."

Han Zheng frowned slightly, his jaw tightening as he turned his head to look at Lin Qing. "Lin Qing, take Old Wang and Xiao Li and fall back with Ah Hua’s team now. That is a direct command."

Lin Qing didn’t budge an inch. She adjusted her grip on her weapon, her dark eyes looking back at him with cool, unshakeable stubbornness.

"I don’t register on their little toy," Lin Qing replied smoothly, her tone completely even, as if she were discussing a weather report. "To them, I’m just an irrelevant, non-powered civilian. Which means they’ll underestimate me—and that means I’m staying right here beside you. You’re going to need someone who can see the blind spots while you’re busy holding them back."

"Lin Qing—"

"We stand together," Lin Qing interrupted, her voice quiet but carrying an absolute, uncompromising edge that left no room for argument. "Don’t waste breath trying to order me back. I don’t follow orders that lead to preventable losses."

The military commander chuckled darkly at the display, waving his hand impatiently. "A heartwarming reunion, but completely pointless. You think you have a choice? Secure the prize first! Move in!"

The soldiers moved forward, their boots heavy in the snow as they unclasped the shock-shackles, their faces masked by visors that hid any trace of humanity.

Just as the lead soldier raised a pair of heavy mechanical cuffs toward Han Zheng’s wrists, Lin Qing’s uncanny, inexplicable luck struck.

High above on the roof of the lead military command truck, an improperly sealed wiring harness inside the heavy automated turret junction box—damaged during the harsh transit through the frozen pass—had been slowly collecting melted snow. The water seeped directly into the main capacitor relay, bypassing the external rubber seals and flooding the internal circuitry.

BANG—! FLASH!

A blinding burst of blue electrical sparks and a thick cloud of acrid, metallic-smelling black smoke exploded from the top of the command truck! The sudden, deafening pop echoed wildly off the narrow canyon walls, sounding like a gunshot in the confined space.

The hostile soldiers violently flinched, their heads snapping upward in complete shock as a shower of molten sparks rained down onto their helmets and shoulders.

"Now!" Han Zheng roared!

In that fraction of a second, Han Zheng unleashed his kinetic power. A visible ripple of distorted air exploded outward from his chest as he slammed a localized kinetic force shockwave into the snow!

The sheer compressed air pressure erupted like an invisible mortar shell, slamming into the front line of hostile soldiers and hurling five of them backward through the air like ragdolls, sending them crashing into the deep drifts.

Behind them, Ah Hua didn’t waste the opening.

SCREECH—!

With his power-enhanced physical strength, Ah Hua yanked the heavy steering wheel into a full lock, his muscles bulging under his thermal gear!

The trucks roared to life, their heavy, studded tires crushing over the side snowbanks as the rear trucks executed a hard, desperate reverse turn. Using the rear truck’s heavy steel ram-plate, Ah Hua smashed through two confused hostile foot soldiers who tried to raise their rifles, forcing them to dive for cover.

"Retreat! Fall back!" Ah Hua yelled over his vehicle’s external speakers as the trucks broke through the weakened rear perimeter, their engines screaming as they sped back down the open mountain pass toward the Research Center.

"Damn it! The haulers are escaping!" the military commander snarled, regaining his footing and wiping black soot from his coat. He turned back toward the remaining group, his face twisting with raw, unbridled rage. "Forget the trucks! Encircle these four! Put them in shock-shackles, or shoot them in the legs if you have to!"

Dozens of armed soldiers instantly surged forward, closing the circle tight. Heavy rifles, shock-nets, and electrified batons were raised from every angle, completely sealing off any remaining route of escape.

In the middle of the frozen canyon, surrounded on all sides by an army of hostile military guards, the four of them stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the snow.

Han Zheng’s kinetic energy crackled softly around his fists, the air around him shimmering with latent pressure. Xiao Li’s stone armor glistened under the dim, winter sun, his breathing steady as he prepared to tank the incoming volley.

Old Wang kept his sniper rifle aimed straight at the commander’s throat with lethal, patient precision, and Lin Qing stood calm and watchful at Han Zheng’s side, her sharp mind already cataloging the enemy’s ammunition counts and physical stances as the heavy steel shackles snapped open around them.

The standoff had begun, and the air in the canyon felt heavy with the promise of blood.
