The heavy, metallic clack of high-caliber rifle bolts locking into place echoed sharply off the towering canyon walls, sounding like a death knell in the freezing mountain air.

Dozens of red laser sights danced across the snow-dusted asphalt, painting bright crimson target dots directly across Han Zheng’s chest, Xiao Li’s stone-armored shoulders, Old Wang’s throat, and Lin Qing’s vest.

The choke point was absolute. With four dark military armored transports sealing both ends of the narrow pass and heavy, wire-reinforced suppression nets raised on all sides, the geometry was completely stacked against them.

A full-scale firefight out in the open snow was a death sentence for everyone. In a confined space like this, sheer volume of heavy automatic fire would tear through even the thickest tactical gear within seconds.

Behind the military line, the distant roar of diesel engines echoed through the valley. Ah Hua’s supply haulers had successfully broken through the weakened rear perimeter, their heavy steel tires crushing through the snowbanks as they accelerated down the open highway. The primary objective—securing the escape of the main logistics team and alerting the Research Center—was complete.

Han Zheng’s dark eyes flicked briefly toward Lin Qing, his gaze sharp and calculating beneath his calm brow. In the span of a single heartbeat, an unspoken understanding passed between them.

A direct clash here meant taking dozens of high-density suppression rounds and armor-piercing bullets at point-blank range. A temporary, calculated surrender bought them time, mobility, and a direct ticket straight into the heart of the enemy’s operational base.

"Stand down," Han Zheng commanded quietly, his voice low and smooth enough that only his three companions could hear it over the idling engines. "Don’t resist."

Xiao Li’s jaw clenched tightly, a low growl catching in his throat as his slate-grey stone armor slowly receded back into his skin.

Old Wang lowered his rifle with a heavy, bitter exhale, though his calloused thumb remained resting lightly against the safety latch until a hostile soldier stepped forward and violently yanked the high-caliber weapon from his grip.

"Smart choice," the military commander sneered, stepping through the churned snow with a smug, arrogant grin. He adjusted his coat, gesturing to his men. "Cuff them!"

Six soldiers swarmed forward, carrying heavy, mechanized shock-shackles—thick, reinforced steel collars wired with high-voltage dampening coils designed specifically to override active human biological fields.

They slammed the heavy restraints onto Han Zheng and Xiao Li first. The moment the cold metal locked around their wrists, a sharp, buzzing electrical hum surged through their veins, forcibly disrupting their internal energy flow.

Han Zheng’s vast kinetic reserves were instantly suppressed beneath the agonizing neural overload, forcing a tight, silent grimace from his lips as his muscles locked up for a brief, agonizing second.

When the soldiers approached Lin Qing and Old Wang, however, the military commander waved his hand dismissively, barely casting them a second glance.

"Don’t waste the heavy dampeners on the dead weight," the commander instructed casually, checking his clicking handheld scanner one last time. "The scanner shows zero energy signature for these two. They’re just ordinary civilians. Use standard steel cuffs and toss them in the back."

To the military unit, non-powered survivors were completely harmless secondary baggage—incapable of breaking military-grade steel or posing a threat to a squad of trained, armed soldiers. It was a massive, arrogant underestimation born of their absolute reliance on their scanner devices, and it was precisely what Lin Qing had anticipated.

Rough hands shoved the four of them toward the rear of a heavy-duty armored troop transport.

They were forced up the steel steps and dumped into the dark, frigid interior hold. The heavy rear doors slammed shut with a deafening, pneumatic thud, locking them inside near-total darkness, save for a single dim, red light mounted on the iron ceiling.

Two armed guards sat across from them on the narrow metal bench, their rifles resting across their vests as the transport’s massive engine roared to life, lumbering forward over the frozen highway.

Inside the vibrating compartment, the silence was heavy and oppressive. Xiao Li sat slumped against the iron wall, his breathing shallow and labored as the shock-shackles continuously pulsed high-voltage frequencies against his suppressed power field. Han Zheng sat tall beside him, his expression cold, guarded, and utterly unreadable, his dark eyes fixed silently on the two guards across from them.

Lin Qing sat quietly to Han Zheng’s right, her hands bound behind her back, her posture composed. While the guards assumed she was cowering in helpless silence, her sharp, analytical mind was operating at maximum capacity.

She cataloged every subtle variable: the distinct rhythmic shifting of the six-speed heavy transmission, the specific hydraulic hiss of the transport’s suspension whenever it hit an incline, the guards’ reinforced Kevlar weave, and the muffled radio chatter leaking from their earpieces.

She calculated their average speed and tracked every left and right turn, mentally mapping their precise path deeper into the unmonitored border sectors.

Then, her uncanny, inexplicable luck struck once more.

As the heavy armored vehicle surged over a particularly rough, frozen trench in the mountain road, the entire chassis jolted violently! The heavy steel frame slammed hard against its axle, throwing everyone inside slightly off-balance as the truck rocked to one side.

During that sudden, jarring impact, the locking mechanism on Lin Qing’s standard steel cuffs—which had been hastily slapped on by a negligent soldier using a rusted, poorly maintained pair—suffered a microscopic internal structural failure. A worn retaining pin deep inside the tumbler popped clean out of its housing under the force of the jolt.

Lin Qing felt the subtle, silent give in the metal around her wrists immediately.

Keeping her facial expression entirely blank and terrified for the guards’ benefit, she slowly worked her fingers behind her back. With a gentle, effortless flick of her hands, the left cuff slid completely free from her wrist without making a single sound against her thick coat sleeves.

She didn’t immediately move her hands forward or drop the metal. Instead, she adjusted her posture slightly, catching Han Zheng’s dark eyes in the dim red glow of the cabin light.

Through a tiny, deliberate glance and a subtle shift of her unbound fingers behind her waist, she signaled him: I am free.

Han Zheng’s eyes darkened slightly, a faint, dangerous glint passing through them beneath his calm facade. The suppression shackles were painful and draining, but with Lin Qing free and holding the advantage of being completely underestimated by their captors, the balance of power inside the truck had already inverted.

The transport rattled over miles of treacherous post-apocalyptic terrain, the ambient hum of its oversized tires vibrating up through the floorboards.

To anyone else, the passage of time inside a dark, windowless steel box would be disorienting, but Lin Qing kept a precise running clock in her head. Twenty-seven minutes of steady high-speed driving had elapsed before the vehicle began a steep, downward tilt.

They were descending into a subterranean corridor.

The air inside the troop hold shifted noticeably. The crisp, bite-sized chill of mountain snow faded, replaced by the heavy, dry heat of industrial climate control and the unmistakable tang of engine grease and ozone. Above the roar of the diesel engine, a sharp metallic reverberation echoed off concrete walls, confirming they had passed beneath an underground ceiling.

Across the cabin, the two military guards shifted in their seats, unclipping their rifles from their chest harnesses and checking their sidearms. One of them tapped his helmet radio, listening to a garbled series of call signs before speaking into his mic.

"Command, Transport Four arriving at Processing Bay Three," the guard reported, his tone dull and routine. "We have two power-users and two non-powered assets. Prep the suppression dock."

Han Zheng didn’t flinch at the mention of the suppression dock, but his jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Beside him, Xiao Li let out a ragged breath, leaning his head back against the iron wall as the high-voltage hum of the shock-shackles continued to sting his wrists, keeping his stone-hardening abilities completely locked behind a wall of artificial muscle spasms.

Old Wang, sitting on Lin Qing’s left, quietly leaned closer under the cover of a sudden brake hiss. "Lin Qing," he breathed, keeping his lips barely moving, "if this turns sour the second those doors open..."

"Stay quiet and follow my lead," Lin Qing whispered back, her voice lower than the rumble of the axle beneath their feet. "When the doors open, don’t look at my hands."

Old Wang gave a microscopic nod, his instincts instantly locking into place. He didn’t ask questions. He simply settled his weight over his heels, preparing his body for immediate violence the second an opportunity presented itself.

Outside, the heavy air brakes hissed in a long, descending squeal as the transport ground to a halt. The floor plates vibrated as massive, heavy steel doors groaned open somewhere nearby, followed by the clinking of chains and the loud, rhythmic clatter of boots on metal grating.

"Unload them!" a harsh, authoritative voice barked from outside the truck’s rear doors. "Get the prime target into the heavy containment frame immediately! The Director wants his baseline scan completed before the night shift!"

The guard sitting closest to the door stood up, grasping the heavy iron locking lever on the inside of the blast hatch.

Lin Qing let her freed left hand rest lightly behind her back, her fingers poised like a coiled spring over the steel cuffs. Beside her, Han Zheng shifted his weight forward, his dark eyes locked onto the guard’s throat, waiting for the exact second the latch swung free.

The lever turned with a loud, mechanical CLANG.

Light flooded into the dark cabin.

They had arrived.
