Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 169: The Flash Point & BlackoutThe heavy iron lever on the transport’s rear hatch clicked downward with a harsh, metallic thud that echoed ominously off the cold iron floorboards.
As the heavy steel blast doors swung outward, harsh, industrial fluorescent light flooded into the pitch-black hold, temporarily blinding everyone inside.
Outside stood a full four-man processing squad clad in heavy, reinforced tactical vests, backed by two automated ceiling-mounted turret emplacements. Lining the concrete walkway of Sub-level 3 were a dozen armed guards, their high-caliber assault rifles leveled directly at the back of the truck.
"Move! Grab the prime target first!" the lead processing guard barked, stepping up the metal steps with a heavy pair of hydraulic containment clamps. "Get the restraint harness over his shoulders before he even thinks about—"
He never finished the sentence.
Lin Qing didn’t give them a single second to establish control or realize she was no longer bound. Her freed left hand whipped forward out from behind her back like a striking viper.
With textbook precision, her fingers clamped onto the lead guard’s right wrist, twisting his arm outward until his elbow popped sharply against its joint. Before the soldier could even register the agonizing pain, Lin Qing yanked his humming, high-frequency shock-baton from his belt and reversed her grip in one continuous motion.
In a fluid, seamless strike, she drove the crackling, high-voltage tip of the baton straight into the delicate control housing of Han Zheng’s heavy suppression shackles!
CRACK-BOOM—!
The sudden, massive electrical surge completely overloaded the dampener’s internal neural circuits, shattering the heavy steel lock like brittle glass in a violent shower of blue sparks. The agonizing, high-voltage neural loop that had been suppressing Han Zheng’s biological energy field instantly vanished into thin air.
"Target active! Open fire—!" a guard screamed from the concrete bay floor, raising his rifle.
Han Zheng’s dark eyes flared with dangerous intensity. Weeks of compressed, raw kinetic energy erupted from his body all at once, bursting outward in a terrifying, visible shockwave of distorted, pressurized air.
BOOOOOOM—!
The sheer compressed air pressure hit the processing squad like an invisible mortar shell, hurling six fully armored soldiers clean off their feet and slamming them violently into the concrete walls twenty feet away.
The kinetic blast didn’t stop there. The expanding shockwave ripped upward toward the ceiling, slamming directly into the bay’s main overhead transformer junction and primary high-voltage electrical trunk line running along the concrete girders!
BANG! FLASH—!
A blinding, violent explosion of brilliant white sparks erupted overhead as the main junction box disintegrated under the sheer impact.
Power lines snapped, transformers ruptured, and the entire subterranean facility’s primary electrical grid blew out in a cascade of deafening pops.
Instantly, the harsh fluorescent lights died, plunging the vast underground processing bay into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Sparks showered down from the ceiling like dying fireworks as the facility’s secondary backup generators kicked in, bathing the smoky bay in the rotating, blood-red glow of emergency strobe lights. Blaring alarm sirens echoed deafeningly through the cavernous concrete corridors.
"Warning: Sub-level 3 power breach. Emergency grid active. Sector containment initiated."
"My eyes! I can’t see!"
"Fall back to the blast doors! Where is the target?!"
Panicked shouts filled the smoky air as the surviving guards scrambled blindly in the flickering red darkness, firing wild bursts from their rifles into the shadows.
Inside the transport cab, Xiao Li roared, his Earth Hardening power flooding back into his veins as the electrical interference vanished. His skin darkened into a dense, slate-grey molecular stone armor. With a powerful surge of enhanced physical strength, he snapped his own damaged shock-shackles clean off his wrists like dry twigs, tossing the broken metal onto the steel floor.
"Old Wang, move!" Lin Qing commanded calmly, her voice cold and steady amid the blaring sirens and chaotic strobe flashes.
Working together with rapid, silent coordination, Lin Qing, Old Wang, and Xiao Li stripped the gear off the four downed guards lying unconscious outside the truck’s steps. Old Wang snatched an assault rifle, a chest rig, and three spare magazines, while Lin Qing grabbed two sidearms, extra ammo, and a pair of dark military coats left hanging on a nearby supply rack.
"Put these on over your gear," Lin Qing said, tossing a dark-grey military coat and a broad tactical visor to Old Wang and Han Zheng. "If we keep our heads down in the red light, we look like local security responding to the breach."
Han Zheng pulled the heavy military coat over his broad shoulders, zipping it up to his throat as his kinetic energy stabilized into a low, lethal hum around his fists. Beside him, Old Wang slapped a fresh magazine into his stolen rifle with a satisfying metallic CLACK, pulling a tactical cap low over his eyes to obscure his face.
The dark coats hung heavily over their shoulders, masking their distinct attire beneath standard-issue military grey. In the dim, flashing emergency lights, the transformation was convincing enough to pass a casual glance.
"Blast doors on the main perimeter are starting to lower!" Old Wang warned, pointing toward a massive steel gate slowly descending at the end of the processing bay.
"We aren’t going back out, they will catch up to us too fast without a vehicle," Han Zheng said, his dark eyes locking onto a reinforced steel service door standing jarred open near the ruptured electrical box. "We go deeper in."
In the chaotic flicker of the red emergency strobes, the four of them moved like ghosts through the thick smoke. Drawing their stolen caps low over their eyes, they brushed past disoriented soldiers who mistook them for a responding security detail in the dark.
Before the heavy blast doors could slam down and seal the sector shut, they slipped through the jarred service door, melting into the dark, unmonitored maintenance corridors of the enemy stronghold.
The narrow service corridor smelled faintly of scorched copper wiring, damp concrete, and stagnant motor oil. Unlike the loud, alarm-blaring processing bay, this back passage was eerily quiet, illuminated only by distant red floor-strip lighting that flickered rhythmically along the baseboards.
Lin Qing paused at the first junction corner, her back pressed flat against the cold wall as she held up a hand. Her eyes scanned the overhead conduit lines, tracking where the heavy power cables split off.
"This route most likely bypasses the primary security checkpoints," Lin Qing murmured quietly, her breath forming faint, translucent mist in the chilly corridor air. "The guards in the main bay will assume we made a desperate break for the surface exit or got pinned down behind the blast doors. That buys us a narrow window of opportunity to locate our confiscated gear and map their central control room."
Old Wang adjusted his grip on his stolen rifle, his eyes tracking the dark shadows stretching down the hallway ahead. "If they have someone running this facility, he’s not going to sit idly by. He’ll lock down every sub-level the moment he realizes the processing squad failed to secure the targets. We need to stay on the move before they bring heavy thermal scanners online."
"Xiao Li, keep your stone armor suppressed unless we draw direct fire," Han Zheng instructed softly, his calm authority anchoring the group. "In these dark halls, we move as shadows, not targets. An active energy signature will draw their remaining sensors right to us."
Xiao Li gave a tight nod, the rocky slate layer on his arms fading back beneath his sleeve. "Understood, Commander. My strength is ready if we hit a wall."
Ahead of them, the maintenance hall sloped deeper down into the earth, leading directly toward the lower levels of the subterranean complex—where the military faction’s true operations, research labs, and command hub lay waiting in the dark.
Step by silent step, the four of them moved into the depths, fully armed, disguised, and completely in control of their next move.
As they rounded the second bend, the concrete walls yielded to reinforced steel bulkheads stamped with yellow hazard emblems. Overhead, an auxiliary comms speaker crackled to life, emitting a static-heavy broadcast that reverberated down the hollow passage.
"All squads to Sub-level 3 loading dock immediately," an agitated officer’s voice commanded over the intercom. "The prime target’s signature is lost. Repeat, power grid is down and primary scanners are offline. Initiate a full-sector lockdown."
Lin Qing brought the group to a sudden halt beside an access door labeled LABORATORY STORAGE & EQUIPMENT LOCKER 4.
"This must be it," she whispered, her fingers tracing the electronic lock panel on the frame. Thanks to the power blowout Han Zheng had triggered, the mag-lock interface was cycling through a reboot loop, its red indicator light blinking erratically.
She pressed the manual emergency release bar beneath the panel. With a long, mechanical hiss of escaping air, the heavy steel door slid back six inches, revealing row upon row of locked steel lockers inside—where their confiscated custom equipment, sniper gear, and personal sidearms were currently resting under guard.
"We get our weapons back," Han Zheng said softly, a dark smile touching his lips as he slid through the opening first, "and then we tear this facility apart from the inside."
