The air in the cavernous Command Hub was thick with the acrid, suffocating stench of scorched copper wiring, melted circuit board plastics, and the low, heavy hum of emergency backup power banks struggling to maintain basic secondary systems. Wisps of dark, metallic smoke drifted lazily beneath the high concrete ceiling, catching the rhythmic, blood-red pulse of the emergency strobe lights that painted the entire high-tech deck in dramatic crimson hues.

Han Zheng held his position near the central console, his right arm locked rigid. His knuckles glowed with a dangerous, translucent kinetic aura that vibrated merely inches from the young soldier’s throat.

The air surrounding his fist hummed with high-frequency pressure, ready to discharge a crushing shockwave at the slightest hint of betrayal. Beside him, Lin Qing kept her shotgun leveled at the young soldier’s chest with stone-cold, unwavering precision, her thumb resting lightly on the safety catch. Xiao Li stood adjacent, his stone arms raised in a heavy defensive guard, his muscular frame ready to physically crush any sudden aggressive movement.

"Start talking," Lin Qing said, her sharp, icy voice cutting through the ambient, electronic thrum of the server banks like shattered glass. "Give us your name and one good reason why we shouldn’t knock you out cold right next to your commander."

The young soldier didn’t flinch, retreat, or show even a single trace of panic in his eyes. Keeping his movements slow, deliberate, and entirely non-threatening, he reached two fingers into his vest’s front breast pocket, slowly drawing out a high-clearance security badge attached to a heavy lanyard. He held it out flat on his open palm for Lin Qing to inspect.

"My name is Ye Lin," he said, his voice remarkably steady despite the weapons trained directly on his chest. "I’m a Special Forces Lieutenant stationed at this facility, and..." He paused briefly, his gaze dropping down to the silver-haired officer lying unconscious on the cold floorboards. "...I’m Director Chen’s biological son. His only direct descendant left alive."

Old Wang glanced back briefly from his vigilant post at the entrance, raising a grizzled eyebrow through the precision optic scope of his sniper rifle. "A family affair, huh? Explains why you pulled your punches when you were trading strikes with Xiao Li earlier."

"He’s an old-fashioned tyrant," Ye Lin continued, his sharp eyes darkening with suppressed, long-standing resentment. "My father believes in legacy, ancient bloodline authority, and absolute control over everything in his orbit. But I never wanted any part of his twisted legacy or this prison. I hate everything he does here—treating innocent people like disposable battery packs, cattle, and lab specimens. The only reason I put on this military uniform, the only reason I obey his orders and pretend to serve him, is because he holds my mother captive. I can’t abandon this facility for good until I locate where he’s keeping her."

"So why step in now?" Han Zheng asked, his kinetic aura dimming slightly as he studied Ye Lin’s unblinking, earnest eyes. "Why risk blowing your cover to stop us?"

"Because you’re the first ones strong enough to actually break his control," Ye Lin replied cleanly, meeting Han Zheng’s gaze head-on. He knelt down beside his unconscious father, unfastening a heavy, biometric master keycard from Director Chen’s inner coat pocket and holding it up toward Han Zheng. "My father isn’t the top boss of this operation. He’s just a regional manager for a much larger network operating in the background. There are several more facilities just like this scattered across the country now, all performing biological energy extraction on captured survivors. You need to be careful—taking him down today won’t stop the whole machine."

He pointed toward the glowing, half-destroyed central command terminal. "If you try to escape through the surface right now, the automated lockdown protocols will trigger automatically. Heavy armor divisions on the surface deck will seal the blast doors and flatten you in the open courtyard. Take my father as your hostage. With him in your hands, the automated turrets and defense squads won’t risk opening fire."

Ye Lin turned to the master console, tapping a rapid, fluid sequence of administrative commands into the touch interface using his security bypass codes. "I’m overriding the electronic locks in Block C right now. That sector holds high-potential captives who were slated for processing tomorrow morning. If you leave them behind, my father’s second-in-command will execute them all to cover up the security breach. Take Director Chen, rally the captives from Block C, and head straight for the main surface courtyard. That’s where your friends will meet you."

Lin Qing glanced down at her wrist interface, where her broadcast monitor displayed a flashing green confirmation ping. "He’s telling the truth about the timing. Ah Hua and the Research Center strike force just confirmed our signal transmission. They’re breaching the surface perimeter right now."

"Then we move fast," Han Zheng commanded, his tone sharp and decisive. He reached down with one hand, hauling the massive, unconscious body of Director Chen over his broad shoulder like a heavy sack of grain. "Ye Lin, what about you? Come with us."

"I can’t," Ye Lin said, shaking his head firmly as he pulled up encrypted diagnostic logs on the terminal screen. "If I flee with you right now, the network will realize I betrayed them and move my mother to a black site I’ll never track down. I have to stay behind in the internal system, erase the security logs of our fight, and dig up her location while the base is in total panic. We’ll cross paths again. Now go!"

Han Zheng gave Ye Lin a sharp, respectful nod. "Don’t die here, Lieutenant."

Without another word, the four turned and rushed out of the Command Hub, with Han Zheng carrying Director Chen over his shoulder. As they sprinted down the upper maintenance corridors, heavy mechanical clangs echoed through the subterranean complex as Ye Lin’s remote console commands forced open every remaining cell door in Block C. Dozens of disoriented, newly freed captives poured out into the concrete passages, joining the growing surge of liberated survivors heading toward the central surface lift.

Minutes later, the massive steel freight elevator carried Han Zheng’s team and a wave of prisoners up through the dark shaft, bursting out into the crisp, cool night air of the surface courtyard.

The moment the heavy gates slid open with a loud screech, they were met with a terrifying wall of steel and loaded firearms. Surrounding the wide concrete courtyard were three heavy armored infantry vehicles, two automated turret trucks, and dozens of heavily armed facility guards with high-caliber assault rifles leveled directly at the elevator bay.

"Hold your fire! Hold your fire!" the lead guard commander screamed frantically into a bullhorn, his voice trembling with sheer panic as he saw who was slung over Han Zheng’s shoulder. "They have the Director! Do not engage under any circumstances!"

Han Zheng stepped out onto the concrete pavement with unhurried, measured strides, hoisting Director Chen higher on his shoulder and pointing a sidearm directly at the elder officer’s temple.

"Drop your weapons and back away from the gates!" Han Zheng’s voice boomed across the wide courtyard, cold, thunderous, and completely merciless. "Or your Director dies right here on the pavement!"

The guards hesitated in complete chaos, intense panic rippling through their ranks as they looked at one another, completely paralyzed by the hostage threat and unable to take a single shot.

Before the tense standoff could break down into violence, the night air thundered with a deafening screech of tearing metal, crumbling masonry, and roaring diesel engines.

BOOM—CRASH!

The massive outer gates of the mountain facility shattered inward in a blinding shower of concrete dust, twisted iron, and brilliant yellow sparks. Two massive, armored transport trucks slammed through the barricades, followed closely by a dozen soldiers and guards clad in high-tech combat gear.

At the front of the armored convoy stood Ah Hua, holding a heavy anti-material rifle rested against his shoulder.

"Research Center Strike Team! Secure the entire perimeter!" Ah Hua barked over his comms, his eyes widening in immense satisfaction as he spotted Han Zheng holding Director Chen hostage in the center of the courtyard. "Commander! You actually pulled it off!"

The Research Center team moved with terrifying, practiced efficiency, swarming the courtyard in a wave, disarming the paralyzed facility guards, and guiding the freed captives safely into the warm interiors of the armored transports.

Han Zheng carefully handed Director Chen over to two guards, who immediately bound the elder officer in heavy energy-dampening restraints they got from the facility soilders and loaded him into the truck.

As the chaotic scene settled and the freed prisoners cheered around them, Han Zheng stood near the shattered perimeter gates, looking back toward the dark, smoking entrance of the subterranean mountain.

"It’s not over yet," Han Zheng said quietly, remembering Ye Lin’s parting words in the Command Hub. "Director Chen was just a pawn. There are more facilities out there."

Lin Qing adjusted her vest, her expression turning serious as she met Han Zheng’s dark gaze. "Then we’ll find every single one of them and tear them down. Load up, everyone—we’re heading home."
