The heavy convoy rolled down the last stretch of road winding through the rocky mountain pass. The low, guttural rumble of the stolen trucks and the open-topped scout jeep echoed against the towering granite cliffs, cutting through the eerie, quiet stillness of the mountain.

In the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, Han Zheng rested his forearm against the window frame, his dark, sharp eyes scanning the high ridges above for any signs of movement or hidden spotters. Beside him, Ah Hua sat in the driver’s seat, his hands gripping the steering wheel while his comms headset hummed with low-frequency static.

Reaching up, Ah Hua clicked the primary comms switch on his chest rig, tuning directly into the Research Center’s internal band.

"Research Center Command, this is Ah Hua," his deep voice resonated clearly over the channel. "We are approaching the main entrance with the full convoy. Get ready on the controls."

Static crackled briefly before a familiar, gruff voice responded over the speaker. "Copy that, Ah Hua. Gate’s coming up."

Up ahead, the blast gates of the Research Center came into view, set deep into the surrounding wall.

Standing on the elevated platform near the primary control housing, Guo Jiong slammed his palm down onto the hydraulic activation console.

With a deep groan, the heavy blast doors slowly parted, sliding back to clear the path. Guo Jiong peered over the railing, giving a firm, respectful nod toward the lead vehicle as the convoy rolled into the loading bay.

The moment the vehicles cut their roaring engines, the quiet place erupted into a flurry of activity. The doors swung open, and a small welcoming party stepped out into to meet them.

Leading the group was Lu Feng. He walked with his usual disciplined, military posture, though a faint shadow of deep exhaustion showed around his eyes—the clear physical strain of maintaining round-the-clock perimeter defense and managing base logistics while everyone was away.

Beside him stepped Lieutenant Chen, his sharp gaze immediately taking in the reinforced armor plates on the newly acquired trucks.

Walking briskly behind them was Dr. Zhou and right near Lu Feng’s side stood Han Ye, his small frame dressed in a clean hoodie, his dark eyes searching the dismounting soldiers and guards until they locked firmly onto Han Zheng and Lin Qing.

Guo Jiong approached the group. "Good to see you back in one piece," he said, giving a firm, respectful nod to Han Zheng. "Song Yan is currently leading a security patrol along the western perimeter, or he would’ve been right here to welcome you and the team back himself."

"Understood," Han Zheng replied smoothly, his sharp eyes taking in the crowd as Lu Feng stepped up beside him, visibly relieved to have everyone back at base.

The sheer amount of heavy gear was staggering.

Three additional heavy military trucks, completely brimming with armory crates, tactical gear, and high-caliber ammunition, stood idling alongside the scout jeep.

Behind them, two depot stepped out, carefully hauling out a silver-haired, battered man bound in heavy, glowing energy-dampening cuffs.

A wave of hushed, intense murmurs ripples through the gathered guards.

Everyone had pressing questions burning in their minds. What happened at the subterranean facility? Who were the three unfamiliar, heavily armed people dismounting from the secondary truck? And who was the captive in chains?

Before the crowd’s rising curiosity could turn into chaotic questioning, Han Zheng stepped down from the jeep, his calm, authoritative presence instantly restoring quiet.

"I know everyone wants answers," Han Zheng spoke up, his deep voice carrying easily across the space. "We pulled off the mission, but we aren’t going to hold a briefing out in the open. We’ll hold a full, formal debriefing meeting shortly."

Turning his head slightly, Han Zheng looked toward Lieutenant Chen. "Lieutenant, take the prisoner down to low levels immediately. Place him under strict, high-security lock. Ensure the energy-dampening grid is running at maximum capacity."

"Consider it done, Commander," Lieutenant Chen nodded sharply. Stepping forward, he gestured for two armed Depot guards to join him as they seized the bound Director by the arms, marching the pale, silent captive toward the elevator bay.

Han Zheng then turned his attention to Ah Hua. "Ah Hua, take a few minutes to briefly introduce the three new recruits to everyone so they can get settled in."

"Got it," Ah Hua replied, turning to gesture toward Jiang Feng, Chen Yan, and Marcus, who stood waiting near the truck. "Follow me, you three."

Finally, Han Zheng met Lu Feng’s tired gaze. "Captain, please notify all core personnels—including Song Yan once he finishes his patrol—that we will convene a formal debriefing meeting in the Command Hub in one hour."

"I’ll have the notices sent out right away," Lu Feng agreed, visibly relieved to have the team back to share the operational burden.

A few paces away, Lin Qing stepped down from the passenger side of the vehicle, unslinging her shotgun, and set her boots on the concrete floor.

Her eyes immediately scanned the small crowd until they landed on Han Ye. The little boy was standing still, watching her with a quiet, subtle anxiety that he tried to hide behind a blank expression.

Meeting his gaze, Lin Qing gave him a gentle and thoroughly reassuring nod. It was a subtle gesture, but the effect was instantaneous—Han Ye’s small shoulders relaxed, the subtle dark shadow aura hovering faintly near his feet dissipating entirely as he gave her a tiny, barely perceptible nod in return.

Before Lin Qing could walk over to Han Ye, Dr. Zhou stepped forward, pulling a compact diagnostic scanner and a penlight from her coat pocket.

"Hold on right there, everyone," Dr. Zhou said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument as she stepped between Han Zheng, Lin Qing, Xiao Li, and Old Wang. "Before any of you go running off to meetings or your rooms, I need to perform a rapid physical baseline check. I need to make sure none of you are carrying hidden internal trauma, energy burns, or hairline fractures from that facility."

Xiao Li groaned good-naturedly, leaning back against the side of the truck as Dr. Zhou clicked her scanner on, shining a diagnostic light across his stone-hard skin and checking his pupils. "Doc, I’m made of solid rock half the time. The only thing hurting right now is my stomach."

"Your stomach can wait ten minutes, Xiao Li," Dr. Zhou chuckled, moving her scanner swiftly over Old Wang’s shoulders and then checking Han Zheng’s pulse. She stepped up to Lin Qing, her sharp eyes scanning the young woman’s face. "Heart rate is a little elevated, Lin Qing, but overall physical indicators are surprisingly stable. No signs of severe physical fatigue."

"I’m fine, Dr. Zhou," Lin Qing said softly, offering a polite smile. "Just in desperate need of some clean water and a chance to wash off the road grime."

"You’ll get your chance," Dr. Zhou noted, finalizing her diagnostic readouts on her digital pad with a quick tap. "All four of you pass physical clearance. But I expect you to eat a full meal after your meeting."

"We will. Thanks," Han Zheng said, offering a respectful nod to the physician.

Han Zheng then turned back to face everyone, raising his hand to set the final timeline. "Alright. Everyone gets exactly one hour to wash up, clear the road dust, and catch your breath. We gather in the command hub in one hour."

With the orders clear, the crowd began to disperse in an orderly fashion.

Lin Qing retrieved her bag from the back, making her way through the secondary residential suite.

Walking down the quiet hallway toward her room, she unlatched her vest, feeling the heavy weight of physical exhaustion finally catching up to her muscle fibers. The quiet hum of the base’s ventilation system was almost soothing after days of roaring engines, gunfire, and collapsing concrete structures.

Entering her minimalist room, she set her bag on the side table and unbuckled her boots. She walked over to the washroom, turning the tap and splashing cold, clean water directly onto her face.

She leaned over the sink, letting the cool droplets drip from her chin as she stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her pale skin was smudged with light traces of soot, her hair slightly disheveled. Though her body was tired, her mind was hyper-alert, racing through the complex string of events that had unfolded over the past few days.

They had freed prisoners, captured a high-ranking regional director alive, brought back three capable new allies, and secured a massive haul of military weaponry. But as she wiped her face clean with a dry towel, the lingering weight of their unfinished business back at base settled heavily on her mind.

Director Chen was locked downstairs in low levels, but he wasn’t the only prisoner there.

Yang Jun was down there.

Lin Qing gripped the edges of the porcelain washbasin, her knuckles turning slightly white. She had lost her memories of but she believed that Yang Jun held the key to some of her questions.

’The debriefing meeting comes first’, Lin Qing thought to herself, her expression hardening into stone as she straightened her back. ’We map out the base resources, figure out how to fetch the food supplies left behind at the underground depot, and handle Director Chen’s network threat. But immediately after that... I need to go down and interrogate Yang Jun.’

She took a deep, steadying breath, letting the cool air fill her lungs. Turning away from the sink, she walked out and put on a fresh, clean shirt, preparing herself for the crucial hours ahead.
