The Command Hub was bathed in the mechanical hum of overhead white fluorescent strip lights. Heavy maps, topographic surveys of the surrounding mountain pass, and digital monitors detailing perimeter energy signatures flickering across the wall displays cast a pale blue glow over the room. The air inside was cool and thin, carrying the faint, sterile scent of ozone and recycled oxygen.

Around the central steel table, the core leadership team sat in focused, expectant silence. The atmosphere was heavy, saturated with the quiet tension that always followed a major operational shift.

The journey back from the subterranean facility had been grueling, but there was no time for rest. Every individual around the table knew that the choices made within these four walls in the next hour would determine the base’s survival over the coming months.

Han Zheng stood at the head of the long table, his palms resting flat against its brushed surface. On his left, Lin Qing sat upright, her posture rigid and precise despite the faint, lingering exhaustion in her shoulders and joints. The light caught the sharp lines of her profile, making her appear distant, almost monolithic, as she stared quietly at the center of the table.

"Now that everyone is gathered, let’s get straight to it," Han Zheng began, his deep, grounded voice cutting cleanly through the ambient hum of the electronics. "After we were taken to the facility, we neutralized their primary guard force, liberated the prisoners, brought back three capable recruits, and secured three supply trucks packed with heavy military firepower."

A low murmur of relief passed through the room, accompanied by approving nods. The addition of high-caliber ammunition and specialized tactical gear was a monumental victory for the base.

"That ammunition boost alone buys us months of defensive security," someone noted from the far side of the table.

"It does," Han Zheng agreed, his expression remaining stern, refusing to let the temporary success soften his tone. "But the firepower isn’t the most important thing we brought back from that hole. We captured the director of the facility, Director Chen alive, and he is currently locked in the lower levels."

A heavy, sudden silence settled over the room. Eyebrows shot up around the table, and several leaders shifted in their chairs. Capturing an operational director was an extraordinary achievement, but it was also a massive catalyst for danger. A high-ranking officer in a faction like that was a walking target, and holding him meant inviting retaliation if his allies ever tracked his signal.

"The Director..." Sing Yan spoke up, his voice heavy with caution. "That’s a massive bargaining chip, but it also makes us a prime target if his superiors come looking for him. If they have tracking tech or emergency beacons, holding him here is like sleeping on a live grenade."

"That brings us to the core issue," Han Zheng said, glancing at Lin Qing, who met his gaze with a sharp, decisive nod. "Director Chen’s son, Ye Lin, gave us critical intelligence. This subterranean base wasn’t an isolated rogue operation. It was merely one node in a network."

Dr. Zhou’s fingers paused over her tablet, her brow furrowing deeply as she processed the terminology. "A network? Meaning there are other facilities like that?"

"Multiple," Lin Qing spoke up, her clear, calm voice drawing the entire room’s focus. Her tone was measured, but the gravity behind her words was undeniable. "These facilities operate on a systematic, almost industrial scale. They are actively hunting, capturing, and extracting high-grade energy from powered individuals to fuel their own centralized strongholds and advance their research. Director Chen was just a regional manager overseeing one local branch."

Han Zheng tapped his knuckles against the steel table to emphasize the point, the hard thud echoing off the walls.

"This changes our operational protocols effective immediately," Han Zheng declared, sweeping his gaze across every squad leader present. "From this moment on, every patrol, scouting run, and scavenging team leaving the Research Center must operate under maximum high-threat guidelines. The Network might have mobile capture squads roaming the surrounding provinces. They target power users specifically, but they will not hesitate to wipe out non-powered individuals."

"So no more small, light-armored scouting runs," Guo Jiong remarked, crossing his arms tightly over his vest. "Any unit stepping outside these walls needs heavy backing, thermal tracking, and overlapping field coverage."

"Precisely," Han Zheng said. "We cannot afford to lose people to ambushes. Furthermore, I will personally be conducting the interrogation of Director Chen. We need the exact coordinates, security layouts, guard rotations, and broadcast frequencies of every sister facility connected to his regional hub before the Network realizes this base has gone completely dark."

Xiao Li, sitting near the middle of the table, leaned forward, resting his elbows on the metal frame. "Boss, speaking of going outside... what about our immediate survival needs? What about the food situation? We brought back weapons, heavy armor, and trucks, but with the Depot refugees and the new recruits coming in today, our supplies are draining quickly."

"That’s our second immediate priority," Han Zheng responded smoothly, pulling up a secondary display screen. "The underground depot overflowing with rations and supplies is still sitting there waiting for us, completely untouched."

Han Zheng tapped the control interface, pulling up a high-resolution map on the main monitor.

"We aren’t taking any chances with hostiles, rogue bands, or scouts," Han Zheng ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument or delay. "We’re sending a heavily reinforced extraction team to clean out that depot in a single run. We load every crate into the transport trucks and bring it back here before nightfall."

He began issuing assignments with rapid, practiced efficiency, outlining the structure of the operation. Da Yong was assigned to handle the heavy armor transport, tasked with driving the lead breach vehicle. Lieutenant Chen, Guo Jian, and Sun Hao were slotted for fire support and communications cover, ensuring constant telemetry with the Command Hub. Han Zheng assigned the newly liberated recruits, Jiang Feng and Marcus, to assist with mechanical maintenance and front-line scouting, testing their integration into the main force under live conditions. And lastly, Lieutenant Chen leading the entire operation.

"That’s a solid lineup," Lieutenant Chen noted approvingly. "Heavy defense, thermal fire support, and fast mobility. They can load the trucks and clear out the sector before any local hostiles even notice the noise."

"Set the mission for early tomorrow morning at first light," Han Zheng concluded, looking around the table at the gathered faces. "Get the trucks prepped, inspect the armory gear, double-check the fuel reserves, and make sure everyone involved gets proper rest tonight. Meeting adjourned."

The chairs scraped against the polished concrete floor in unison as everyone stood up. Almost immediately, the room broke into a flurry of motion and hushed conversation as people moved to coordinate their respective divisions. Guards began discussing perimeter shift changes and energy conservation schedules, while leaders headed out toward the motor pool to notify everyone else about the morning deployment.

Lin Qing remained in her seat, quiet and still, waiting patiently as the Command Hub gradually emptied.

Han Zheng stood by the central console, shutting down the digital map displays and archiving the mission logs until only the two of them remained in the quiet, dimly lit room. The constant background hum of the main server rack felt louder now, filling the silence between them.

Stepping around the long briefing table, Lin Qing walked over to stand beside him. The low, pale blue glow of the primary monitor cast soft shadows across her face, accentuating the tired lines around her eyes, yet her posture remained unbroken.

Han Zheng looked down at her, his sharp, imposing gaze softening slightly as the professional mask slipped away. He took in her pale complexion and slightly tired eyes.

"You look exhausted, Lin Qing," Han Zheng said softly, his voice dropping an octave from his commander tone. "You’ve been pushing yourself past your limits. You should get some food and sleep."

"I will," Lin Qing replied quietly. Her voice was faint, but inside it lay an unyielding, unbreakable gravity that made Han Zheng pause. "But there’s something I need to take care of first tonight. It can’t wait until tomorrow."

Han Zheng tilted his head slightly, his dark eyes narrowing as he waited for her to elaborate.

Lin Qing turned her head, looking toward the heavy steel security doors at the far end of the hallway—the doors that led directly toward the lower elevator shaft.

"Director Chen isn’t the only high-value person locked in those cells," Lin Qing said. "Before we move forward with the depot supply run, before we reinforce the perimeter walls, or dive into long-term base defenses... I’m going down to lower levels tonight."

She turned back to face him, meeting Han Zheng’s gaze directly. Her eyes were sharp, dark, and filled with a raw, unresolved intensity that went far deeper than the war outside their walls.

"I want to interrogate Yang Jun."
