Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 184: Uninvited CargoThe bitter mountain wind howled through the granite pass. The shockwave from the Apex defender’s opening kinetic strike still echoed off the steep cliff faces, leaving the sharp smell of ozone and burnt stone hanging heavy in the freezing air.
Han Zheng didn’t flinch. He absorbed the back-blast of the impact into his kinetic dampeners, stepping smoothly around a cluster of falling debris as the purple energy hummed violently around the defender’s frame.
While they were absent, Dr Zhou had made a bunch of equipment for them, she had even made a bunch of gadgets that would help them with their powers as well.
"Xiao Li," Han Zheng called out, his voice calm and unhurried over the comms. "Keep him pinned."
Xiao Li didn’t waste breath answering. With his skin covered in a dense, stone armor, he charged forward. His boots tore through the black ice, leaving deep gouges in the frozen earth.
The Apex defender pivoted instantly, his eyes burning with volatile power as he hurled a heavy fist wrapped in dense purple kinetic force straight at Xiao Li’s chest. The air distorted around his arm from the sheer pressure of the gathering energy.
Xiao Li leaned directly into the blow. The impact shattered the outer layer of stone plating across his chest, the sheer force driving his boots two inches deep into the frozen dirt—but his hardened body held firm. The violent kinetic discharge flared outward, scorching his vest, yet Xiao Li barely grunted. Before the defender could retract his arm, Xiao Li slammed both arms around the man’s waist, trapping him in a bone-crushing bear hug that locked his upper torso in place.
"Get off me!" the defender snarled, his teeth bared as purple energy built up along his spine to blast Xiao Li backward.
Han Zheng closed the distance in two rapid, fluid strides. Moving with precision, he thrust his right palm directly toward the defender’s left collarbone. The kinetic dampeners in Han Zheng’s sleeve whistled loudly, releasing a concentrated, inverse shockwave that disrupted the defender’s gathering power at the core frequency.
The purple light instantly collapsed into harmless static. The shock of the kinetic release traveled straight into the defender’s collarbone with a loud, sickening ’crack’, short-circuiting his nervous system and knocking him out cold. The man went limp in Xiao Li’s grip, slipping down into the snow as Xiao Li released his hardened form with a heavy exhale.
Across the canyon floor, the remaining three Apex guards dropped their rifles onto the frozen rock, raising their hands in immediate surrender. They looked at the unconscious defender slumping into the slush, then up at the heavy weapons aimed at them from the cliff ledges above. None of them made a move toward their sidearms.
Seeing Ye Lin’s former Block C soldiers step out from the shadows of the middle supply trucks, the captured guards’ faces paled. As far as they were concerned, this wasn’t an external ambush by an unknown faction—it was an internal mutiny. They had no idea who Han Zheng or Lin Qing were, and the discipline of the strike squad only reinforced their assumption that this was a high-level purge.
"Bind them," Lu Feng ordered, stepping out from behind the rear transport with two others to secure the prisoners with heavy alloy cuffs.
Lin Qing walked past the surrender site without a word, her tablet in hand, heading straight for the primary supply truck. The heavy rear doors were sealed with double magnetic locks, but with the vanguard’s primary power grid fried from the dampening charges, the locking mechanism popped open with a heavy metallic hiss as she bypassed the manual release array.
The interior of the main transport was lined with industrial cargo racks, packed to the ceiling with high-grade transport containers.
"Refined alloy stocks intact," Lin Qing reported, her crisp voice echoing slightly inside the steel container as she scanned the digital manifest codes with her slate. "Class-A medical precursors in secondary thermal containment... and thirty-six heavy energy cells, fully charged and stable."
"We just secured our power reserves for the rest of the year," Lu Feng said, stepping up into the cargo bay and running a hand over one of the heavy alloy cases.
"There’s something else back here," Lin Qing said suddenly, her gaze shifting past the row of supply crates to the far back corner of the cargo hold.
Han Zheng stepped up into the truck, his boots clicking sharply against the steel floor plating. Tucked behind a heavy stack of energy cell crates was a reinforced steel seat bolted directly into the vehicle’s bulkhead. Bound securely to the chair by heavy alloy restraints was a woman.
She wore a dark blue, tailored Apex military uniform complete with silver collar pins. Her head was slumping forward, her face half-hidden by strands of dark brown hair, completely unconscious.
Lin Qing stepped forward, reaching out to check the woman’s neck for a pulse. "She’s alive. Breathing is slow and steady, but she’s completely out cold. Looks like a heavy medical sedative."
Han Zheng frowned slightly, examining the clean cut of her uniform. "A prisoner wearing Apex uniform?"
Ye Lin climbed into the rear of the truck, taking one long look at the unconscious woman before turning back toward the open doors. "Bring one of the captured guards up here. Now."
A minute later, Lu Feng shoved one of the bound Apex guards into the cargo bay. The guard looked at the unconscious woman, swallowing hard as he shrank back against the steel wall under Ye Lin’s stern glare.
"Who is she?" Ye Lin asked directly, his tone sharp and demanding.
"We don’t know her name!" the guard blurted out quickly, sweat breaking out across his forehead despite the bitter chill of the canyon. "We were just the transport detail! We were five hours out from central command when local security picked her up trying to slip past the outer perimeter check at the sector border. She was wearing the uniform, but she was fleeing!"
"Fleeing?" Han Zheng repeated, stepping closer.
"Yes! They caught her near the sector border trying to clear out on foot," the guard explained rapidly, his voice trembling. "The regional officer gave orders to bind her, sedate her, and throw her in the back of the supply run so central command could interrogate her when we arrived. That’s all we know, I swear!"
Ye Lin looked down at the woman, his expression unreadable, then turned back to Han Zheng. "She tried to defect or run, and they caught her mid-transit. If she was wearing an Apex uniform, central command will realize she’s missing the moment this convoy fails to check in at the next automated repeater."
"We can’t bring her back to the Research Center without knowing who she is or what information she carries," Lin Qing noted carefully, her fingers tapping against the edge of her tablet. "It’s too much of an unknown variable to introduce to our base."
"Leave her with me," Ye Lin offered smoothly, stepping forward to lean against the cargo crate. "I’ll take the unconscious defender, the guards, and this woman back to Block C’s lower holding cells. My men can monitor them safely behind our security doors. If she wakes up and talks, I’ll find out who she is and what she was running from."
Han Zheng weighed the proposal for a brief moment, reviewing the layout in his mind, then gave a decisive nod. "Fair enough. Keep her isolated until you know her motives."
Han Zheng’s team immediately began transferring the bulk of the heavy energy cells, medical precursors, and alloy stocks onto the Research Center’s transport trucks. The work was fast and methodical, every soldier working in synchronized motion to clear the canyon floor before any unexpected secondary variables could interfere.
Before securing their own vehicles, Han Zheng made sure his men left two heavy crates of high-calorie rations and a set of secondary battery packs on the ground for Ye Lin’s small garrison.
"That should keep your ridge jammer active and your base power online for a while," Han Zheng said, gesturing to the left-behind supplies stacked neatly near the canyon wall.
Ye Lin reached into his vest and pulled out a sleek, hand-held long-range communicator, handing it over to Lin Qing.
"This frequency is hard-coded to my personal unit," Ye Lin said, his voice quiet as he met Han Zheng’s gaze. "It’s encrypted through Block C’s old military channel, so Apex sweeps won’t pick up the signal bridge. I can keep up the illusion that Block C is active for another few days, but eventually, regional command will send a physical inspector when this convoy goes missing. When that happens, I’ll ping you on this line before we clear out."
Lin Qing took the radio, inspecting the casing briefly before securing it inside her jacket pocket. "Keep your heads down on that ridge, Ye Lin."
"Always do," Ye Lin replied with a brief, quiet smirk. "Good luck with the haul."
Twenty minutes later, the canyon floor was completely cleared of high-value cargo. Ye Lin’s team turned back toward the subterranean entry of Block C with their prisoners and the unconscious woman in tow, while the Research Center’s assault team pulled out of Sector 4, their heavy transports loaded to capacity with Apex’s captured logistics haul.
As the convoy rolled smoothly back over the frozen trail toward home, the thick grey fog began to thin, revealing the jagged outline of the distant mountains beneath a pale winter sun.
Han Zheng sat in the passenger seat of the lead truck, his dark eyes fixed on the horizon ahead. The ambush had gone without a hitch, Block C’s cover was holding, and their base had just secured the critical resources needed to survive the harsh months ahead.
Everything was finally falling into place.
