Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 185: The Red CoreThe late afternoon sun broke briefly through the heavy layer of winter overcast, casting a pale, watery light across the rugged peaks of Sector 4. The slight, temporary rise in temperature was just enough to soften the upper crust of black ice that had coated the mountain pass overnight, turning the deep ruts of the highway into a treacherous, slushy mess of mud and melting snow.
The Research Center’s return convoy moved cautiously in low gear down the gulch road. The heavy diesel engines of the transport trucks grunted under the strain of carrying several tons of refined alloys, energy cells, and high-tier medical precursors.
Near the midway bend where the canyon wall flared outward, the rear transport’s left tires lost traction on a patch of rotting slush. With a heavy, metallic groan, the multi-ton vehicle slid off the reinforced shoulder, its rear axle settling into a soft, waterlogged ditch right beside a jackknifed, abandoned commercial refrigeration truck that had been sitting wrecked on the embankment.
The convoy came to an immediate halt.
"Hold the perimeter," Han Zheng ordered over the comms, pushing his door open and stepping out of the lead vehicle’s cab. His boots sank two inches into the wet slush with a sharp crunch.
Lu Feng dropped down from the second truck, walking back along the convoy line while scanning the treeline and high ridges. He stopped at the sunken rear wheel, kneeling down to inspect the clearance. "The frame is resting directly against the dirt bank. We aren’t going to drive this out on its own power. We’ll need the lead truck’s winch and a couple of steel traction mats to haul it clear."
"Xiao Li, Ah Hua, grab the heavy winch cables from the lead truck," Lu Feng called back over his shoulder. "Guo Jian, keep eyes on the rear approach."
Ah Hua unspooled the heavy iron tow cable over his shoulder, wading through the slush to reach the rear axle. Because the transport had slid right up against the side of the jackknifed semi, the gap between the two vehicles was barely a meter wide. As Ah Hua squeezed into that narrow space to secure the cable, a sudden, wet snarl echoed from a torn side panel in the semi’s crumpled aluminum wall.
A frost-covered arm reached out through a jagged tear in the semi’s crumpled side panel. The rotting, blackened fingers clawed wildly at Ah Hua’s jacket, dragging him with surprising force against the sharp, rusted edge of the sheared metal plating.
"Watch out!" Xiao Li barked, lunging forward through the slush.
Ah Hua reacted on instinct, shoving his shoulder hard into the creature’s arm to break the grip, but the jagged, rusted steel of the trailer wall tore straight through his sleeve. The metal carved a deep, jagged gash along his forearm. He grunted in pain, stumbling backward into the mud as blood instantly soaked through his jacket sleeve.
Four dormant infected spilled out from the ruptured side of the refrigeration truck, dropping heavily into the slush. They were thin and gaunt, their skin gray and translucent from all the time trapped inside the sub-zero trailer—but as the ambient air warmed, their movements were unnaturally quick and fluid.
"Keep the noise down!" Lu Feng warned sharply, drawing his suppressed sidearm. "Don’t attract anything else from the ridge."
Two of the stragglers rushed toward the ditch. Lu Feng raised his weapon and fired two rapid, suppressed shots. The first round struck the lead creature through the eye socket, dropping it instantly into the mud. The second took a round straight to the center of its chest, but the infected barely flinched; its upper torso seemed unnaturally dense, absorbing the kinetic impact of the bullet without stopping its forward momentum.
Xiao Li stepped into the gap, his skin darkening instantly into a thick, stone-like armor as his Earth Hardening engaged. He caught the lunging creature’s jaw with a bare hand, shoving it violently back against the truck’s heavy tire before crushing its skull with a heavy, downward strike from his hardened fist.
The fourth infected—the one that had cut Ah Hua—turned its sunken, clouded eyes toward Han Zheng.
Han Zheng stepped forward calmly, eyeing the creature’s gait. Despite its decaying, frostbitten tissue, a faint, rhythmic pulse glowed faintly beneath its exposed ribcage. As the creature lunged forward with explosive speed, Han Zheng pivoted sideways, thrusting a short, concentrated kinetic palm strike directly into the center of its chest.
Instead of the usual give of bone and muscle, Han Zheng’s palm collided with something rock-hard. A dull, heavy resonance vibrated back up through his hand as his kinetic energy struck a solid core inside the creature’s chest cavity.
The sheer force of the kinetic blow shattered the creature’s spine, throwing it backward five meters into the slush where it lay motionless.
"Ah Hua, status?" Han Zheng asked, turning back as the immediate threat cleared.
"Just a flesh wound," Ah Hua muttered, sitting down heavily on the running board of the transport while Lieutenant Chen stepped over with a field medical kit. "Rusted metal caught my arm when that thing yanked me. It’s deep, but it didn’t hit an artery."
Lieutenant Chen immediately began cleaning the wound with antiseptic, applying a tight pressure bandage around Ah Hua’s forearm. "You’ll need proper stitches once we get back to the base, but this bandage will stop the bleeding for the drive."
Meanwhile, Lin Qing knelt beside the fallen infected Han Zheng had struck, holding her field scanner over its chest. Using her knife, she sliced through the torn, rotting fabric over the creature’s sternum.
"Han Zheng, look at this," she said softly.
Han Zheng and Lu Feng stepped closer, peering down into the opened chest cavity. Embedded directly within the thoracic cavity, where the heart would normally rest, was a rough, crystalline formation roughly the size of a fist. It pulsed with a dim, dark crimson light, radiating a faint warmth that melted the surrounding slush on the creature’s torso.
"Is that an Apex device?" Lu Feng asked, his brow furrowed as he leaned over the corpse.
"No," Lin Qing said, using her fingers to carefully pry the crystalline stone free from the calcified bone structure surrounding it. "It seems entirely organic... or at least, a biological reaction to high-density energy absorption. It doesn’t seem like Apex technology."
The crimson energy stone hummed faintly in Lin Qing’s palm, smooth yet jagged around the edges, glowing like a dying ember in the fading daylight.
"The thaw isn’t just melting the ice," Han Zheng observed, examining the strange core. "The infected that awakened after the winter dormancy are mutating."
Lin Qing wrapped the red stone in a pouch, securing it inside her field case. "Dr. Zhou needs to see this immediately. If the infected across the sector are developing internal energy cores during dormancy, the threat profile is going to change completely once spring arrives."
"Let’s get this truck pulled out and move," Han Zheng said, stepping back toward the lead vehicle.
Xiao Li attached the heavy winch cable to the rear axle, and with the lead truck pulling from the solid road, the trapped vehicle slid smoothly out of the slushy ditch. Within ten minutes, the convoy was back in formation, rolling carefully down the mountain pass toward home.

By nightfall, the blast gates of the Research Center opened, admitting the supply convoy into the subterranean loading bay.
The garage immediately burst into organized activity. Da Yong, Guo Jiong and Song Yan met the team at the bay, helping unload the crates of refined alloy, medical precursors, and heavy energy cells secured from the Apex convoy.
While Lieutenant Chen escorted Ah Hua to Zhou Ming to stitch his forearm, Han Zheng and Lin Qing walked directly up to the main laboratory, carrying the case containing the crimson stone.
Dr. Zhou was already at her primary workbench, surrounded by flickering monitors and diagnostic gear, when they entered.
"We brought back something unusual from the road," Lin Qing said, setting the insulated case onto the sterile metal table and unlatching the locks.
Dr. Zhou adjusted her glasses, stepping forward to look at the glowing red crystal resting inside the pouch. She brought a hand-held bio-scanner over the stone, watching as the diagnostic screens instantly filled with rapid spikes of unusual energy readings.
"Fascinating..." Dr. Zhou murmured, her eyes widening behind her lenses. "The cellular structure surrounding this core is completely calcified, yet the energy output is remarkably stable. It’s an organic energy cell... created by biological adaptation."
"Is it dangerous?" Han Zheng asked.
"In its raw state? It appears stable," Dr. Zhou replied, using a pair of insulated forceps to lift the red stone toward an optical microscope. "But if the infected are naturally synthesizing energy stones of this density during dormancy, it means their physical capabilities and durability might increase drastically as the weather warms."
Dr. Zhou looked up at Han Zheng and Lin Qing, her expression solemn. "You brought back invaluable medical precursors and power cells today. But this small red stone... this might be the key to understanding what we’ll be facing in the months ahead."
Han Zheng nodded slowly, leaning his hands against the edge of the lab table as he looked at the crimson glow reflected in the glass.
The convoy raid was a complete success, their supplies were secured, but the world outside was already shifting into something far more dangerous.
