Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 186: Shadows & StonesThe heavy door of the Research Center’s primary medical ward hissed shut, sealing out the damp, cold air from the lower parking bay. Inside, the sharp smell of antiseptic hung heavy in the warm air.
Zhou Ming tied off the surgical thread with a pair of sterile forceps, using a clean gauze pad to wipe away the excess blood from Ah Hua’s forearm. The jagged gash torn by the rusted metal plating of the truck trailer ran seven inches down his skin, but the fourteen neat stitches held the flesh firmly together.
"All done," Zhou Ming said, stepping back to toss the used gauze into a steel container. "The cut was clean enough, but rusted scrap metal is a parasite magnet in this climate. Keep the bandage dry for three days and don’t lift anything heavy with that left arm."
Ah Hua flexed his fingers, testing the tension of the tight white dressing wrapped around his arm. He grunted softly, pulling his dark shirt back down over his elbow. "It doesn’t hurt. Thanks, Zhou Ming."
"Don’t go flexing it around Da Yong in the garage," Zhou Ming warned dryly, adjusting his surgical lamp. "I don’t want to sew it back together if you drop a heavy alloy crate."
Across the hall in the central engineering hub, Sun Hao’s fingers flew across his terminal keyboard, monitor screens flickering with streams of diagnostic code. beside him, Jiang Feng—the former depot transport mechanic brought in from Block C—was using a heavy torque wrench to secure the thick copper conduits connecting the newly acquired Apex energy cells to the base’s primary junction box.
"Primary power routing confirmed," Sun Hao reported, tapping a broad execution key.
With a deep, resonant hum that vibrated through the concrete floor, the Research Center’s secondary grid flared to life. The dim amber lamps along the subterranean corridors shifted to a crisp, bright white. On the monitoring board, the energy reserves jumped all the way up to seventy-eight percent capacity.
"That does it," Jiang Feng said, wiping a streak of dark axle grease from his forehead with the back of his hand. "These Apex cells are military-grade heavy duty. The thermal heating grid can run at full output for the next six months without dipping."

Upstairs in the primary lab, the atmosphere was quiet and focused.
Dr. Zhou stood leaned over an illuminated optical table. Her glasses reflected the dark crimson light radiating from the containment pouch sitting open between her diagnostic tools.
Han Zheng stood on the left side of the workbench, his arms folded across his chest, watching the real-time energy readouts spike across the overhead screens. Lin Qing stood beside him, her sharp gaze fixed on the rough, fist-sized crystal resting under the scanner array.
"The internal structure isn’t mineral-based," Dr. Zhou explained, her quiet voice carrying a tone of deep scientific curiosity mixed with solemn concern. She adjusted a dial on the bio-scanner, causing an enlarged cross-sectional projection of the crimson stone to appear on the main monitor. "Look at these fiber channels. It’s a bio-crystallized organ, formed by dense energy compression inside the host’s thoracic cavity during the cold state."
"A biological energy core," Lin Qing noted, her voice calm and analytical. "So the winter dormancy didn’t just freeze off the infected—it condensed them."
"Precisely," Dr. Zhou said, using insulated tweezers to lightly touch the edge of the stone. A faint pulse of warmth rippled through the glass table, causing the diagnostic instruments to hum. "During the thaw, as the ambient temperature rises, this crimson core acts as an organic catalyst. It pumps concentrated energy directly into the surrounding muscular and skeletal tissue. The tissue doesn’t just thaw; it mutates. Bone density increases, and muscle fibers calcify to absorb physical shock."
"Which explains why the straggler on the highway took a suppressed round to the chest without stopping," Han Zheng said softly, his brow furrowing. "And why it felt like hitting solid rock when I struck its sternum."
Outside the doors of the lab, the dimly lit upper hallway was quiet.
Han Ye walked down the corridor with slow, measured steps. Hearing the faint murmur of voices coming from the research room, he stopped near the heavy door frame. Knowing his father and mother were inside, he didn’t call out or make a sound.
Instinctively, a faint, subtle layer of shadow manipulation wrapped around his small frame like a silent, dark veil. The shadows softened the sound of his boots against the polished tile floor and blurred his outline against the wall, allowing him to step inside without a single person noticing his entrance.
He stood silently in the corner of the lab, his dark, mature eyes fixed on the glowing red crystal resting on Dr. Zhou’s table.
Listening to Dr. Zhou’s explanation, Han Ye’s young face tightened. A sharp realization settled deep in his mind: ’Energy stones... they are already forming.’
In his previous life—the timeline before his regression—Han Ye had been a young, orphaned child when the first energy-stone infected began appearing across the ruins of the cities. After his parents died, he had been forced to survive on his own in the dark, learning through brutal trial and error how to use his shadow manipulation to hide in the ruins and scavenge for scraps of food.
He remembered the hierarchy of those terrifying stones vividly.
The crimson stones were the baseline—the first wave of thaw mutations that created tough, fast-moving hulks. But back in his past life, when he was still struggling to master his shadows, he had been unfortunate enough to run into a mutated infected carrying a yellow energy stone.
The yellow-stone infected possessed elemental shockwaves that tore through concrete walls like paper. Han Ye had barely been six years old when he stumbled into its territory. His shadows had been stripped away in seconds by the sheer pressure of the creature’s aura, and he had barely escaped with his life, hiding beneath a collapsed sewer grate for three days while bleeding out from crushed ribs.
Seeing a crimson stone sitting on the lab table this early in the season meant the world’s mutation cycle was accelerating faster than it had in his past timeline.
Han Ye let the shadow veil around his body fade away, stepping out from the corner of the room into the light.
Lin Qing was the first to notice him. Her awareness instantly picked up the subtle shift in the room’s lighting as the shadows dispersed. She turned her head, her gaze softening slightly as she looked down at the quiet boy standing near the door.
"Han Ye," Lin Qing said. "You should be in the residential suite with Gu An and Su Xiao."
Han Ye didn’t answer immediately. He walked over to the side of the table, stopping a short distance away from the glowing red crystal. His eyes remained calm and unnaturally mature for a child his age.
"I heard the noise from the garage," Han Ye said, his voice even and composed. "Is that what came out of the ice?"
Han Zheng looked down at his son, noticing the focus in the boy’s eyes as he stared at the crimson stone. "Yes. We found it on the road back."
"It’s heavy," Han Ye remarked quietly, his tone deliberately containing slight childish curiosity. "The things outside...are they going to get harder to kill when the ice melts completely?"
Dr. Zhou looked over at the five-year-old boy, surprised by his observation, but Han Zheng simply placed a firm, protective hand on his son’s shoulder.
"We have better weapons now," Han Zheng said quietly, his voice laced with steady authority. "And we have the power cells to keep the perimeter secure."
Han Ye nodded once, a brief, silent acknowledgement. He leaned slightly into his father’s touch and the tension in his small shoulders eased slightly. He knew what was coming in the spring, but standing inside this reinforced facility, surrounded by trained warriors and abundant power reserves, this timeline was already vastly different from the cold, lonely ruins of his past.
Lin Qing looked between Han Zheng and the quiet boy, sensing the deep, unspoken understanding between them. She reached out, her fingers resting lightly on the back of Han Ye’s head.
"The energy cells are connected," Lin Qing said, turning back to Dr. Zhou. "We should use the refined alloy stocks we brought back to reinforce the upper gate housing before the full melt begins."
"Agreed," Han Zheng said. "I’ll have Captain Lu Feng and Guo Jian start on the structural plating tomorrow morning."
Dr. Zhou lowered the bio-scanner’s protective cover over the crimson stone, sealing the red glow inside a reinforced glass container. "I will keep this sample under isolated containment and begin testing its resonance against our defensive shields."
Outside, the wind continued to blow across the frozen mountain pass, carrying the slow, inevitable warmth of the coming thaw. But inside the Research Center, behind heavy doors and bright white lights, the team was no longer unprepared.
