The morning air inside the Research Center carried a crisp, damp chill that filtered down through the upper ventilation shafts from the mountain above. Even with the seasonal thaw beginning outside, turning the mountain passes into slushy, unpredictable tracks, the subterranean complex remained a hive of steady, methodical activity.

In the high-ceilinged sub-level garage, Guo Jiong stood near the staging racks, overseeing a work detail of a dozen Depot guards and workers. They were uncrating the high-grade alloy plates hauled back from the Apex convoy raid, stacking them into organized piles along the concrete wall.

"Keep those lifting straps centered!" Guo Jiong called out, his deep voice carrying across the echoey bay. "Da Yong and Jiang Feng need these plates prepped and measured before noon. Don’t drop a corner on the concrete."

A few yards away, Da Yong wiped down the heavy winch assembly of a transport truck with an oily rag, while Jiang Feng used a blowtorch to weld temporary mounting brackets along the chassis.

Sparks rained down in bright cascades onto the floor. With the Depot workers handling the heavy manual labor, unspooling cables, hauling gear, and sweeping the garage floors, the core tactical squad could focus entirely on technical modifications and perimeter security.

Lu Feng walked up to the edge of the vehicle bay, leaning against a steel pillar as he watched Jiang Feng secure a thick kinetic dampening plate over the transport’s front bumper.

"How long until the primary haulers are fully reinforced? We need to secure more supplies." Lu Feng asked over the hiss of the blowtorch.

Jiang Feng pulled off his welding mask, wiping a streak of dark axle grease from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand. "Give us until tomorrow evening, Captain. With Guo Jiong’s men handling the heavy lifting and supply transfers, we can double our reinforcement speed. The front grilles and side panels will be able to take direct heavy-caliber rounds without buckling."

"Good," Lu Feng said, eyeing the upper access ramp that led to the outer security gates. "We’ll need those trucks ready to hit the road on a moment’s notice."

Down in sub-level 3, an abandoned, concrete-walled storage bay had been cleared out and repurposed by the squad into an open-air training zone. Sandbags were stacked along the perimeter walls to absorb strays, and heavy structural pillars were wrapped in thick industrial rubber to absorb off-target physical strikes.

Han Ye stood near the back corner of the open bay, surrounded by the quiet shadows cast by the overhead floodlights. His small frame was perfectly still, his dark eyes fixed on a wooden target block set up thirty feet away against the sandbag barrier.

Instinctively, his shadow manipulation flared into action. A dark, fluid strand of shadow extended from beneath his boots, creeping along the cold concrete floor like liquid ink. The shadow rose silently behind the wooden block, suddenly hardening into a razor-sharp, spear-like tendril that drove cleanly through the center of the target with a dull ’thump’.

Up on the metal observation walkway overlooking the open training area, Lin Qing stood in silence, her vest unzipped over her gray thermal shirt, her sharp eyes tracking every movement the young boy made.

Despite her lost memories, her instincts burned sharp. She noticed how Han Ye didn’t waste a single breath or extra movement. His footwork was rooted, his breath control was measured, and his focus was entirely unnatural for a five-year-old child.

Han Ye felt her gaze and looked up toward the observation walkway. The sharp, hardened shadow spear instantly dissolved back into a harmless pool of darkness beneath his boots.

"You’re leaning too far back on your left heel when you project," Lin Qing said softly, her clear voice carrying across the empty concrete bay as she walked down the metal stairs into the open training space. "If a target lunges at you while your shadow is extended, your balance will be broken before you can retract it."

Han Ye looked down at his feet, adjusting his stance by two inches and widening his base against the floor. "Like this?"

"Better," Lin Qing said, stepping closer and crouching down slightly to match his eye level. She reached out, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder to adjust the angle of his posture. "Keep your center of gravity low. Never rely entirely on your ability to hide or strike from range; your physical body must always be ready to move if the shadow fails."

Han Ye looked into her eyes, seeing the same calm, protective discipline that had kept them alive through countless encounters. He gave a quiet, firm nod. "I understand."

Upstairs in the central laboratory, the atmosphere was far more tense.

Dr. Zhou stood behind a thick protective glass partition, operating a set of mechanical remote arms. Inside the sealed containment chamber, the crimson energy stone extracted from the thawed infected sat on an isolated sensor platform, glowing faintly in the dim light.

Han Zheng stood beside the glass wall, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched the diagnostic monitors flickering with real-time biological data.

"Beginning test stage three," Dr. Zhou announced, her tone cautious as she flipped a series of power switches on the primary console. "I am going to channel a micro-frequency kinetic pulse from the room’s dampening array into the containment field. Let’s see how the bio-structure responds to external force."

A faint, low-frequency hum resonated through the lab floor as a minor kinetic wave washed over the crimson stone.

Instantly, the stone reacted violently. The dark red core flared with an intense, blinding crimson light, its surface temperature spiking from twenty degrees Celsius to over three hundred degrees in less than two seconds. The diagnostic screens instantly filled with jagged red warning spikes as the stone rapidly absorbed the kinetic energy, radiating a harsh, volatile heat wave that rattled the reinforced glass partition.

"Shut it down!" Han Zheng ordered sharply.

Dr. Zhou immediately hit the emergency cut switch. The kinetic pulse died, and the crimson stone slowly settled back into its dim, rhythmic pulsing state, though the heat inside the sealed containment chamber lingered for several minutes.

Dr. Zhou took off her glasses, wiping her brow with a cloth as she looked at the real-time data logs on her screen. "It didn’t convert or channel the kinetic force, Commander. It absorbed it, amplified it, and converted it directly into raw thermal pressure."

"Meaning we can’t use it as a stable power source," Han Zheng said, his tone grim.

"Not yet," Dr. Zhou admitted, shaking her head as she put her glasses back on. "The raw energy inside this core is vast, but it behaves like an unstable catalyst rather than a refined battery. Unlocking a beneficial, controllable use for these stones—whether for energy weapons, medical refinement, or power grids—will take significant time, specialized tools, and much deeper study. If we try to force a current through it now, it will simply explode."

Before Han Zheng could respond, the long-range radio array in the adjacent comms room hummed to life. A distinct, high-frequency encrypted chime echoed through the speaker mounted on the wall.

Sun Hao’s voice cut over the intercom: "Commander! The direct-line communicator from Block C is ringing. It’s Ye Lin."

Han Zheng and Dr. Zhou exchanged a brief look before Han Zheng stepped out towards the command hub. Lin Qing, having heard the alert over her comms, entered a moment later with Han Ye trailing silently behind her.

Sun Hao flipped the toggle, establishing the secure frequency bridge. Static hissed over the speaker before Ye Lin’s quiet, controlled voice came through clearly.

"Han Zheng, do you copy?" Ye Lin asked, the background noise on his end filled with the faint, metallic hum of Block C’s deep ventilation fans.

"I’m here," Han Zheng replied, leaning over the console. "Report."

"The unconscious woman in the Apex uniform woke up an hour ago in my lower cell block," Ye Lin reported crisply. "She’s refusing to give her name or rank to my guards, but she confirmed she was an officer fleeing from regional command’s internal investigation unit."

"Did she say why she was running?" Lin Qing asked, stepping up beside the console.

"She hasn’t opened up yet, but that’s not our biggest problem right now," Ye Lin’s tone hardened. "Apex just dispatched an automated scout drone array across Sector 4 to locate the missing supply convoy. My ridge sensors picked up their telemetry ten minutes ago."

Han Zheng’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Did the drones ping Block C?"

"Not yet, but an Apex regional inspector team is following the drone flight path," Ye Lin warned. "They are scheduled to make a physical inspection of Block C within forty-eight hours to verify why our convoy check-ins failed. Once that inspector steps through my front doors, our cover story dies. They’ll realize Block C is a ghost shell being held by a skeleton crew."

Silence settled over the comms room as the reality of the timeline set in. The seasonal thaw was accelerating outside, mutated infected were awakening in the slush, and Apex command was closing in on their front door.

Han Zheng looked at Lin Qing, then back at the console, his voice steady and laced with unwavering authority. "Keep the woman locked down, Ye Lin. We’re moving up our timeline."
