Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 188: Counter-Intel & Fortress FoundationsLin Qing stood frozen near the threshold of the door. The mystery woman’s quiet, raspy question—’Have you ever read an ’apocalypse book’?’—hung in the damp, cold air between them like an unwelcome ghost.
Lin Qing slowly turned her head back toward the interior of the cell, her eyes narrowing into a look of dry, practical suspicion. She didn’t flinch, nor did her subtle, grounded expression show even a flicker of recognition. In her mind, her past before waking up in the depot’s medical bay was shrouded in a dense blanket of fog; she had no active memory of her previous life, let alone some fictional novel.
"An apocalypse book?" Lin Qing asked, her voice calm, flat, and laced with quiet, unyielding disdain. She gestured slightly with her hand toward the corridor outside. "Look around you. We are living through the complete collapse of human civilization, dealing with infected awakening in the slush, and tracking purge teams sent to execute this base. If this is your idea of a joke or some psychological tactic to test my patience, save your breath."
The mystery woman stared back at Lin Qing from across the small cell, her dark brown eyes scanning every line of Lin Qing’s impassive face, searching for a twitch, a pulse, or a hidden sign of panic.
For a fraction of a second, a flicker of confusion crossed the woman’s features, as if she had expected a completely different reaction. But she quickly suppressed it, stepping back toward her narrow iron cot with a soft, bitter exhale.
"Just a thought," the woman murmured, sitting back down and leaning her head against the damp wall. "Forget I asked."
Lin Qing gave her one last calculating glance, pulled the door shut with a sharp ’thud’, and threw the mechanical deadbolts into place. She paused in the dim corridor for two seconds, letting her brain process the oddity of the interaction. The woman wasn’t acting like a standard military officer from regional command, nor was she acting like a desperate prisoner pleading for her life. She was actively probing.
’I’ll deal with her later,’ Lin Qing thought, turning smoothly on her heel and heading back up the concrete stairwell toward the primary command deck. ’Right now, we have an inspector’s execution team to cover up.’
---
Upstairs on Block C’s primary command deck, the atmosphere was thick with focused, quiet urgency.
Sun Hao was seated at the central communications terminal, surrounded by monitoring screens and tangled data cables. Between them lay the captured regional inspector’s encrypted slate, its outer housing opened and wired directly into Sun Hao’s portable decryption rig with a series of color-coded jumper leads.
Han Zheng stood behind them with his arms crossed over his vest, his dark eyes fixed on the scrolling lines of green command code. Lu Feng and Ye Lin stood on the opposite side of the glowing console, reviewing topographic wireframe maps of the surrounding mountain passes and choke points.
"How’s the signal bridge coming?" Han Zheng asked as Lin Qing walked into the high-ceilinged room, her boots clicking softly against the floor.
"We’re through their outer firewall," Sun Hao replied without taking his eyes off the terminal screen, his fingers tapping a rapid, rhythmic sequence across the mechanical keys. "The inspector’s slate used a rolling cryptographic key tied to his biometric signature. I bypassed the live DNA lock using a synthetic pulse overlay derived from his security token. I just finished building a virtual telemetry loop."
"Explain the loop," Lu Feng said, leaning his frame over the edge of the console.
"Instead of letting the regional command server register a sudden, silent drop in signal—which would immediately trigger an automated high-priority strike team—I am using the inspector’s slate to spoof a routine status ping," Sun Hao explained, pointing a finger to a pulsating green node on the secondary monitor. "Every thirty minutes, our rig will automatically transmit an encrypted, pre-rendered packet back to central command. The packet reads: ’Sector 4 inspection in progress. Road conditions severe due to thaw. Sector clear of immediate hostiles.’ "
"How long will that buy us before they smell something wrong?" Lin Qing asked, stepping up to the console beside Han Zheng.
"Three days. Maybe four at best," Ye Lin said. "Eventually, central command will expect the inspector to return physically to Sector 2 for a face-to-face debrief. But until then, as far as Apex regional command is concerned, their purge team is alive, well, and quietly sweeping the mountain roads."
"Four days is more than enough," Han Zheng said, his deep voice steady and laced with unwavering resolve. He turned to face Lu Feng and Lin Qing. "We need to use every hour of that window to fortify our position and set up a defense strategy that ensures neither facility falls when that signal loop breaks."
---
Ye Lin pulled up a detailed architectural blueprint of Block C on the central holotable, alongside a topographical terrain map of the rocky canyon leading up toward the Research Center.
"Block C cannot be held long-term against a concentrated assault," Ye Lin stated plainly, his tone completely pragmatic. "My garrison is down to a skeleton crew, and our primary automated turrets are completely drained of heavy power cells. When Apex finally realizes the inspector isn’t coming back and dispatches a full battalion, holding this subterranean bunker would be suicide."
"We don’t hold it," Lin Qing said, her hazel eyes tracing the choke points on the digital blueprint. "We turn it into a kill box."
Han Zheng nodded in immediate agreement. "If command sends a strike force, Block C will be their primary target. They’ll expect to breach the blast doors and sweep the lower sub-levels. Instead of leaving them an empty base, we turn Block C into a massive, lethal trap."
"What kind of trap are you thinking?" Lu Feng asked, leaning his hands flat on the edge of the metal table.
"A two-front ambush using the terrain and the seasonal thaw," Lin Qing explained, pointing to the narrow canyon approach leading up to Block C’s main gate housing. "First, we rig the outer perimeter, the main entrance bay, and the lower staging corridors with remote-detonated directional mines and shaped charges. Second, we mount high-frequency acoustic noise-makers on the outer ridges."
Ye Lin’s eyes lit up as he instantly caught her logic. "The thaw is waking up dormant infected across the sector... If we activate those acoustic beacons right as the Apex purge team enters the lower canyon, the noise will draw the thawed, mutated infected directly to Block C’s outer gates."
"Exactly," Lin Qing said. "The Apex strike force will be pinned outside by a horde of infected while trying to breach a facility filled with concealed explosive charges. They’ll be caught between monsters and remote-detonated kill zones without ever laying eyes on a single soldier from our squad."
"That covers Block C," Lu Feng said, nodding approvingly at the sheer efficiency of the plan. "What about the main Research Center?"
Han Zheng leaned over the map, his hand landing directly over the hidden mountain trail that connected the two facilities. "The Research Center must become entirely zombie-proof and assault-proof. If any Apex elements survive the trap at Block C and manage to track us back to our primary base, they need to run into an unbreachable wall."
Han Zheng began laying out the structural defensive overhaul for the main facility:
"First, the outer access trail. We use the heavy earth-moving equipment from the garage to carve out concealed, kinetic-dampened pit traps along the narrowest points of the gulch. Any heavy vehicle trying to push up the mountain path will cave the road in beneath itself."
"Second, the main gate housing," Lin Qing added. "We double-layer the outer blast doors using the high-grade alloy stocks brought back from the convoy raid. Jiang Feng and Da Yong can weld those plates directly onto the outer frame, backing them with kinetic dampening springs. Even a heavy rocket or an unguided artillery shell won’t break the primary seal."
"Third, automated defense overlap," Han Zheng continued. "Old Wang and Xiao Li will construct secondary sniper positions along the high granite cliffs overlooking the gate. We’ll install remote-triggered light turrets in the rock face, powered directly by the new Apex energy cells Sun Hao integrated into our secondary grid."
Ye Lin looked at the comprehensive blueprint spread across the table, a faint smile touching his sharp face. "If we pull this off, the Research Center won’t just be a hidden shelter anymore. It will be an absolute fortress."
"It has to be," Han Zheng said softly, his dark eyes reflecting the cool green light of the monitors. "The thaw is accelerating, the infected outside are mutating, and Apex is actively searching for us. When the storm hits, we will be ready."
Lin Qing looked at the finalized defense plan on the screen, feeling the quiet, steady resolve of the team standing beside her. The strange mystery of the captive woman in the cells below still lingered quietly in the back of her mind, but as she looked at Han Zheng and the blueprints, her focus narrowed to a razor-sharp point.
They had four days before the signal loop expired, and they weren’t going to waste a single second.
