Chapter 282: Chapter 282: Stepping on a Mine

They had already started eating lunch in the RV.

The rain was still coming down, but it didn’t dampen Lily Hart’s enthusiasm for a good meal in the slightest.

’When it comes to food, you have to give it your full, undivided attention and respect.’

It was raining today, and it felt surprisingly cold. Lily Hart checked the temperature—it was only fifteen degrees Celsius.

’It isn’t even September yet. Why is the weather so strange?’ she wondered, then asked, "So, when does winter start?"

Frost Shaw glanced at the date and replied, "Soon."

Lily Hart’s mouth fell open. "Huh? But it’s not even September."

"That’s just how it is. Summer is short, winter is long, and there’s no autumn or spring," Roman Rowe chimed in.

"Oh~" ’Learn something new every day.’

Lily Hart hated winter. She used to have to drag herself out of bed to go to work—at eight in the morning!

Forcing herself out of her warm, toasty cocoon of blankets to go to that cold, soulless job.

But things were better now. The RV had a climate control system, so she only had to feel the cold when she went outside.

Leo Colby sighed. "A lot of people are going to freeze to death again this winter."

He always had a knack for that—silencing the room with a single sentence. The group fell quiet and simply continued to eat.

After lunch, with nothing to do and no customers in sight, everyone was too lazy to go back to their own things.

So they just sprawled on the RV’s sofa. After a while, Roman Rowe called everyone over to play Fight the Landlord.

Lily Hart didn’t want to play. "I win every time. It’s boring."

The others: ’Is she for real?’

Roman Rowe hollered again, "Well then, how about... Minesweeper?"

"Minesweeper?"

Roman Rowe found it on his Light Brain. It was a little game app—no idea what genius developed it.

’People still play Minesweeper in the apocalypse?’

He projected the screen onto the tabletop, revealing a neat ten-by-ten grid of one hundred squares.

Then he went to rummage through the kitchen, everyone’s confused eyes following him.

Frost Shaw asked, "What’s he doing in the kitchen now?"

They found out soon enough. Roman Rowe came out carrying a case of ice-cold beer.

Lily Hart had bought a case since it could be used for cooking or to drink with meals.

Roman Rowe carried it over, setting it on the table with a CLUNK. With a grand wave of his hand, he announced, "Here, everyone grab a bottle!"

They didn’t understand, but they did as he said.

After everyone had taken a bottle of beer, Roman Rowe randomly tapped a square.

"BOOM—" An exaggerated explosion sound effect instantly livened up the room.

Roman Rowe popped the cap off the beer bottle with his teeth, finally explaining the rules before taking a drink.

"Whoever hits a mine has to drink. Simple, right? Isn’t it fun?!"

They were bored anyway, so everyone replied perfunctorily, deliberately drawing out the words, "Sooo... fuuun...!"

Lily Hart asked the crucial question. "Out of these hundred squares, how many are mines?"

Roman Rowe glanced at the settings. "Twenty. That’s the maximum."

"Fine, but we need to use cups. If you just drink from the bottle, who can tell if you’re cheating? What if you just take a tiny sip?" Lily Hart said, her tone full of suspicion.

As Roman Rowe was protesting, "I’m not that kind of person!" Frost Shaw had already stood up to get cups.

Clear, disposable cups. They would show exactly how much you drank. No cheating, and no leaving any at the bottom!

Frost Shaw handed one to each person, and they all filled their cups to the brim with beer.

Lily Hart took charge. "Alright, we’ll start with me and go clockwise, okay?"

Everyone agreed. The seating order was Lily Hart, then clockwise...

Frost Shaw, Seth, Stan Sterling, Owen Warren, Leo Colby, and Roman Rowe.

Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe were on Lily Hart’s left and right, respectively.

"BOOM—" Another exaggerated sound effect. All eyes turned to Lily Hart.

She gave an awkward laugh, then picked up her cup and downed it in one gulp, leaving nothing behind.

Next up were Frost Shaw, Seth, and Stan Sterling, who all passed safely. When it was Owen Warren’s turn, another "BOOM!" rang out.

Owen Warren took a tentative sip. It was slightly bitter. He hadn’t drunk this stuff since he’d become a zombie.

’Zombies can probably drink this, right? It’s not like it can kill me,’ he reassured himself, then downed the rest in one go.

Leo Colby and Roman Rowe also passed safely.

Roman Rowe got a little cocky. "Man, I’m so thirsty!"

Lily Hart rolled her eyes at him and randomly tapped another square. To no one’s surprise, "BOOM!"

"Ooooh! Ooooh!" Roman Rowe hooted, and everyone laughed.

She was stunned. ’Is my luck really this bad today? I picked two and hit both?’

She indignantly chugged the cup of beer. Frost Shaw hit a mine on his turn and wanted to toast with her, but saw she had already finished.

After a few rounds, Lily Hart had drunk a cup every single time, finishing nearly a whole bottle’s worth.

She decided this couldn’t go on. It had to be her seat. She raised her hand. "I want to switch seats!"

Roman Rowe taunted, "Don’t blame the seat for your bad luck."

Leo Colby laughed too. "I agree. I think my seat is great."

Seth chuckled softly. "How about I switch with you, Boss Hart?"

Lily Hart crossed her arms and pretended to be angry. "Are we switching or not? Here’s the plan: I’ll move to Frost Shaw’s seat, and everyone else will shift down one."

Everyone was just teasing her. After a moment of laughter, they all stood up and moved down one seat.

For the new round, Lily Hart was full of ambition, even making a show of rolling up her non-existent sleeves.

She deliberated carefully before finally tapping what she considered an auspicious spot.

"BOOM!"

’Such a cold, merciless sound.’

The smile on Lily Hart’s face instantly vanished. With a light huff, she resigned herself to her fate and downed the beer!

Several more rounds passed. Lily Hart still managed to hit a mine every single time, while the others had also had a few drinks.

After the equivalent of two bottles, Lily Hart was reaching her limit. Her mind was still clear, but she had grown quiet.

Frost Shaw remembered that this was how Boss Hart acted the last time she got drunk—she’d suddenly gone quiet.

She would become completely silent. Looking closely at her eyes now, he saw they had become hazy.

Frost Shaw figured she was drunk, but seeing that she was still in high spirits, he didn’t want to be the one to stop the fun.

He just asked, "Lily Hart? Want to switch seats with me?"

Lily Hart looked up at him, dazed, and slowly shook her head. "No. You have to accept your fate. My luck is just terrible today!"

Her head bobbed, and her upper body swayed unsteadily in her chair.

Looking like she might pass out at any moment, a worried Frost Shaw steadied her by the elbow.

"Lily Hart?" He waved a hand in front of her eyes, but her gaze was completely unfocused.

"Huh?" Lily Hart heard someone calling her name. ’That’s a nice voice,’ she thought. ’Like a summer soda. I want a drink.’

She looked left and right, her eyes finally landing on Frost Shaw’s face. "Hey! It’s your turn. Hurry up!"

Frost Shaw: ’She’s drunk and she’s still thinking about the game.’

He casually tapped a square and passed safely.

But Lily Hart was sure she’d heard an explosion. "Drink up, drink up!" she said excitedly. "You hit a mine!"

Roman Rowe said sourly, "He didn’t hit a mine."

Lily Hart turned to look at Roman Rowe. It took a long moment for her eyes to focus before she said slowly, "Yes, he did."

Roman Rowe was about to argue back, but Frost Shaw gently pulled Lily Hart back so she was facing him again.

"You’re right, I hit one. I’ll drink, see?" Frost Shaw grabbed the beer, poured it into his cup, and downed it in one go.

Lily Hart clapped gleefully. "Now that’s a good boy~" Her words were slurred, but to Frost Shaw’s ears, they sounded surprisingly cute.
